2025 Hurricane Season: Polk County residents can sign up for these local alerts before storms

Yahoo5 hours ago

It's here. The 2025 hurricane season arrived June 1 with many Polk County residents still recovering from last year.
Forecasters with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have predicted 13 to 19 named storms, meaning those with wind speeds at 39 mph or higher. Of those, six to 10 are predicted to become hurricanes, with three to five being major hurricanes at a Category 3 or higher.
If Polk residents learned anything last year, it's that staying informed of the latest storm development and being prepared in advance are critical. Hurricane Milton led to unprecedented flooding that required residents to act swiftly for their families' safety.
Residents should make sure they are signed up for their cities' and county's local alert system heading into hurricane season. It will provide the latest information leading up to a storm on when sandbag sites are open, if shelters open and what the impact is post storm.
The Ledger has compiled this list for residents to sign up for alerts from their local governments:
Polk residents are encouraged to sign up for Alert Polk, the county's local alert system, which sends out emergency notifications and follow on social media accounts

A Florida Weatherman's Hurricane Plea Went Viral. Here's Why.

A meteorologist who has spent his career warning South Florida about hurricanes had a new warning for viewers last week: He's not sure he can do it this year. John Morales of WTVJ in Miami said the Trump administration's recent cuts to the National Weather Service could leave television forecasters like him 'flying blind' this hurricane season. 'We may not exactly know how strong a hurricane is before it reaches the coastline,' he warned. Clips of Mr. Morales's comments have spread widely: one posted on MSNBC's TikTok account has nearly 4,500 comments, and news outlets around the world have written articles about what he said. (This isn't the first time Mr. Morales has been the subject of viral attention: In the fall, his emotional reaction to Hurricane Milton's rapid intensification also hit a nerve.) Here's what Mr. Morales had to say and more about what is going on with the Weather Service. He warned of less accurate forecasts. Mr. Morales's presentation on Monday began with a clip of himself following the Category 5 Hurricane Dorian in 2019 as it moved over the Bahamas. He reassured his Florida viewers that the powerful storm would turn north before it reached their coastline. And it did, exactly when Mr. Morales assured anxious viewers it would. The clip cuts to him in present day, slightly older and now wearing glasses. He recalled the confidence he used to have in delivering an accurate forecast to his viewers. Want all of The Times? Tropical Storm Barbara forms off the southwestern coast of Mexico

What to expect as 2025 hurricane season begins Tropical Storm Barbara has formed off the coast of Southwestern Mexico, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Sunday. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. Two to four inches of rainfall in portions of Mexico's western states may lead to flooding and mudslides through Monday. The storm is also likely to generate sea swells with life-threatening surf and rip currents along the southwestern coast. Forecast cone for Tropical Storm Barbara NOAA/National Hurricane Center At 4 a.m., the center was located in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, moving west-northwest at 12 miles per hour. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, with higher gusts. Barbara is forecast to continue to strengthen and become a hurricane on Monday. NOAA officials predicted a 60% chance of an "above-normal" hurricane season, with between 13 to 19 named storms. Six to 10 of those are expected to strengthen into hurricanes, and three to five could become major hurricanes, forecasters said. The Pacific hurricane season began on May 15, while the Atlantic hurricane season is from June 1 until Nov. 30, with peak activity typically occurring between mid-August and mid-October.

Tropical Storm Barbara expected to become first hurricane of the season in Eastern Pacific

Tropical Storm Barbara formed off the southern coast of Mexico on Sunday morning, and forecasters say it's expected to become the first hurricane of the season in the Eastern Pacific. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Tropical Storm Barbara has maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and is moving off to the west-northwest at 12 mph. It's currently located about 180 miles south-southwest of Zihuatanejo, Mexico. How To Watch Fox Weather A tropical storm is a tropical cyclone that has maximum sustained winds between 39 and 73 mph – an upgrade from a tropical depression. The NHC said Barbara is expected to continue to move off to the west-northwest over the next few days before making a turn to the west at a slower speed on Tuesday. Tropical Storm Barbara is expected to strengthen over the next day or two, and it's expected to become a hurricane on Monday. Download The Free Fox Weather App The NHC said rainfall totals of 2-4 inches, with locally higher amounts, are forecast for the Mexican states of Guerrero, Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco through Monday, raising concerns of flooding and mudslides. In addition, large waves at local beaches are expected to cause life-threatening rip currents. A few hundred miles to the west of Tropical Storm Barbara, showers and thunderstorms associated with a broad area of low pressure located about 600 miles off the southwestern coast of Mexico became better organized on Sunday morning. This disturbance has been dubbed Invest 91E by the NHC. What Is An Invest During Hurricane Season? Further development of Invest 91E is expected, and the NHC said a tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to form later Sunday or Sunday night as it moves northwestward at 5 to 10 mph. Once this system reaches tropical storm status with winds of at least 40 mph, it will receive the name Cosme. An area of low pressure is forecast to develop late this week south of southern Mexico. The NHC said environmental conditions appear conducive for some gradual development of this future low-pressure system, and a tropical depression could form late this week. According to the NHC, it has a medium chance of development over the next seven days. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from May 15 to Nov. article source: Tropical Storm Barbara expected to become first hurricane of the season in Eastern Pacific
