Products that'll help with those pesky spring allergens, pet shedding, reviving your yard, and upgrading your wardrobe.
1. A handy-dandy Grampa's Weeder so you can easily pluck up those unsightly plants from your lawn without bending, pulling, or kneeling —because yard work shouldn't feel like a full-body workout. Just step, twist, and goodbye, weeds! Your back and knees will thank you.
Amazon
Grampa's Weeder is a family-owned small biz that sells tools to make weeding easier!
Promising review:" I saw this tool used on TikTok, so we decided to try it out. It works really well — it is not difficult to get to the root of the weed and is fairly simple to use, as well. We would recommend this tool to anyone who finds it difficult to do the crouching required to pull weeds." — Mary

2. A pet hair remover that is a MUST for shedding season (aka SPRING). This tool is SO easy to use — you simply swipe it over surfaces covered in hair from your furry bestie! It saves more time (and is a heck of a lot easier) than fussing around with a vacuum and lint rollers!
ChomChom Roller is a Massachusetts-based small biz creating an eco-friendly, reusable alternative to sticky lint rollers.
Promising review: "Where has this been all my life!! We have one long-haired cat and three dogs — suffice it to say, shedding hair is a big problem on every cloth-like surface in our home. No more vacuuming the couches and chairs like wild when you have this around. This picks up hair quickly and easily when used correctly (fast back-and-forth motion). I will never not have this in our house!" — shelby cipolla

Lots of reviewers' pets love being brushed with it, too!
Promising reviews: "A dog brush that I don't have to pick dog hair out of. At first, I thought this was some form of dark wizardry. But I don't care because this is awesome!" — MaddSweet
"I've spent hundreds of dollars on toys, treats, houses, scratchers, etc. for my cats. This is, hands down, not even close, the best money I've ever spent! I got so much fur off them, and they loved it! They look so sleek and shiny, and they are rolling around like kittens; they feel so fresh and happy. My cats are still young (all ages 4 and under) so they were pretty well groomed to begin with. I couldn't believe how many knots and snags were hiding in their fur. The whole time I was brushing them, they were purring and rubbing all over me, trying to get more. The self-cleaning feature is so easy!! A click of a button and all the hair falls off." — Samantha

The included cargo net is super handy for keeping everything secure, and it can handle all our gear with ease. I get tons of compliments on it everywhere I go! The only downside is that it's a bit bulky to store, so having an SUV or truck is definitely helpful for transporting it. But overall, this wagon is a total game changer." — Brogan

I got these as a skeptic, figuring maybe, just maaaaybe there's a better solution out there and, you guys. Seriously. This is IT. I got the black lace ones, and these bad boys stay put! Initially, I had them on for about four hours, but I took them for a full eight-hour workday yesterday, and they did great! When spring came around, I noticed he was constantly gnawing at his paw and not eating as much as he used to. I did some research and found this product. When he finished his first tube of these, I decided to wait to order more and see if they really worked or if his allergies just wore off. A few weeks went by, and I noticed him gnawing at his paw again and not eating. I ordered them Sunday and he's back on them again. Promising review:"I used this product on my 10-year-old son. He sweats A LOT on his hands. He would tell me that he was embarrassed at school and he had problems making friends. My son told me he had never shaken a hand outside of mine ever before in his life...it broke me. As a father, I knew I had to fix this. I set an appointment with his doctor and got nowhere. The doctor said it's normal and should go away in the coming years. I asked about surgery, and they said it would be around $10,000, so I started saving. A couple of weeks went by, and I came across this product. I asked my son if he was OK with trying it, and he desperately said yes. We put it on, and his hands are completely dry now. Dog 'Minutes Away' From Being Euthanized Is Saved, But It's Bittersweet
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A dog who was "minutes away" from being euthanized has been saved in the most dramatic circumstances, but his rescue proved bittersweet. Bruce first arrived at DeKalb County Animal Services after being abandoned as a puppy at just six months old. He was adopted shortly after, but within a few short years, he found himself back at the shelter. "Unfortunately, this isn't uncommon," Erica Perets, the Founder of RescueMeATL, told Newsweek. "Many dogs re-enter the system due to circumstances outside their control—like housing restrictions, financial hardship, or major life changes." RescueMeATL is a nonprofit set up to address the way Atlanta responds to what Perets describes as the "shelter dog crisis." "Through viral storytelling, grassroots action, and pressure on broken systems, we help at-risk dogs get seen, saved, and supported—empowering everyday people to be part of the solution," she said. That's how she discovered Bruce and why she decided to share his story on the RescueMeATL TikTok account. "Bruce was placed on the euthanasia list due to lack of space. He had no medical or behavioral concerns—he was simply out of time in an overcrowded shelter," Perets said. Euthanasia is an unfortunate reality for many shelters in the U.S. that struggle with space. According to Shelter Animals Count (SAC), a nationally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to collecting, analyzing, and sharing data on animal sheltering, in 2024, 334,000 dogs were euthanized. At the same time, shelters remain at a breaking point, with the SAC estimating that 103,000 animals were added to shelter populations last year. Peters believes that shelters too often face the brunt of criticism regarding shelter euthanization. She believes the real issues lie with the system they operate in. "Overcrowding, lack of spay or neuter enforcement and government funding, and the continued impact of backyard breeding have created conditions where even healthy, adoptable dogs are being euthanized simply due to space," she said. Peters also believes that the practice of "backyard breeding," where people breed dogs in careless or substandard conditions, has led to shelters being flooded with unwanted litters and surrendered pets. Bruce could so easily have become another statistic. Thankfully, RescueMeATL's intervention and the actions of one good Samaritan changed everything. Bruce the dog getting rescued from an Atlanta animal shelter the day that he was supposed to be euthanized. Bruce the dog getting rescued from an Atlanta animal shelter the day that he was supposed to be euthanized. TikTok/rescueme_ATL "We issued an urgent call to action for Bruce and several other dogs facing euthanasia that day," Perets said. "Todd Smith, known affectionately as 'Mr. Todd' by volunteers and the community, saw that no one was coming and rushed to the shelter. " To say Mr. Todd arrived in the nick of time would be something of an understatement. "Bruce had already received the sedative—the first injection in the process," Perets said. "When Mr. Todd arrived. Bruce was minutes away from being lost. He arrived just in time to save Bruce and stayed at the shelter for five hours while Bruce recovered from sedation." The footage of Bruce walking free from the shelter on the day he was due to be put to sleep was shared on the RescueMeATL TikTok page. It went viral, amassing over 230,000 views and counting. "We shared Bruce's freedom walk because it represents more than one dog's rescue," Perets said. "It's a window into what's happening every day in shelters across the country." It highlighted what proved to be a bittersweet moment for Perets, who had campaigned for several dogs to get a reprieve that day. "Bruce was the only dog who made it out of DeKalb County alive that day," she said. "Every dog deserves a chance, and while we're grateful Bruce got his, we carry the weight of the others who didn't." Bruce will now be fostered by Mr. Todd with the goal of being adopted. Perets is still in desperate need of people willing to show up and help other dogs like him. "You don't need to run a rescue to make a difference; you don't even need experience. You just have to be willing to show up. Because one person did, a good dog got another chance," she said. "But too often, when the alarms are sounded, everyone waits for someone else to step forward. The reality is: if everyone waits, no one comes, and good dogs like Bruce don't make it out."

Joy and grief for lone India crash survivor's family
The UK-based family of the lone survivor of the Air India crash were torn on Friday between joy at his miracle escape and grief at the loss of his brother. "We are happy Vishwash has been saved, but on the other hand we are just heartbroken about Ajay," his cousin told AFP outside the family home in central Leicester. Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, is believed to be the only person to have survived the crash when Air India Flight 171 plummeted from the sky shortly after taking off from the northern Indian city of Ahmedabad. His brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, was on the same flight, but is believed to have perished in the disaster. There were 242 passengers and crew on the plane, including 53 British citizens. At least 24 people were killed on the ground, officials said, after the aeroplane landed on a canteen building where students were having lunch. Since Thursday's tragedy, the small Leicester street where Ramesh's parents and younger brother lived has been flooded with visitors. Ramesh lives not far away with his wife and son, his cousin Hiren Kantilal, 19, told AFP. Ajay also lived in the town, one of the oldest in England, and the two brothers ran a confectionary business together. "They are wonderful people, and heartful people. They are greatest men I have ever seen in my life, both of them," said Kantilal. The brothers were returning to the UK after spending a few weeks on holiday in India, and the family had been waiting to go and pick them up at Gatwick airport. - 'I am totally fine' - Shortly after the crash, they were shocked when Ramesh, who had reportedly been in seat 11A, called his father to say he was alive. Ajay was seated at the other end of the row. "Our plane has been crashed," Ramesh told his dad, according to his cousin. "He was bleeding all over him, in the face and everything, and he said: 'I am just waiting for my brother and I don't know how I get out of the plane'. "He said: 'do not worry about me, try to find about Ajay Kumar' and he said: 'I am totally fine'." Kantilal said his cousin had waited for about 10 to 15 minutes seeking his brother, and then was whisked away to hospital by the rescue services. Images which went viral on social media apparently showed Ramesh walking away from the wreckage of the 787-8 Boeing Dreamliner, and have been splashed across the front pages of British media along with a photo of him in his hospital bed. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to Ramesh on Friday at the hospital where he is being treated for burns and other injuries, footage on his YouTube channel showed. "Everything happened in front of me, and even I couldn't believe how I managed to come out alive from that," Ramesh said from his hospital bed, speaking in Hindi to national broadcaster DD News. His parents had also been desperately trying to contact his brother Ajay on Thursday. "The call was going through, but no-one was answering the call," Kantilal said. At the family home, relatives were frantically scanning their phones to try to buy a flight to Ahmedabad later on Friday afternoon. Downing Street said that the foreign ministry had been in touch with Ramesh to offer him consular assistance. mhc/alm/jkb/bc

Sole survivor of Air India plane crash was in seat 11A
The man who walked away from the Air India plane crash as the disaster's only survivor was sitting near an emergency exit on the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner as it took off from Ahmedabad, India, on its way to London on Thursday. His seat was 11A. The seat is on the left side of the aircraft when facing the cockpit. The man, 40-year-old British national Viswash Kumar Ramesh, said the plane crash-landed on the ground floor of a building where medical students lived. Ramesh said he opened his eyes, realizing he was alive, and unfastened his seat belt before forcing himself out of the aircraft — escaping with a burnt hand. "I could see there was space outside the aircraft, so when my door broke I tried to escape through a little space and I did," he said from his hospital bed. An infographic shows where Ramesh was seated. The image shows seat 11A was near the front of the plane, with some open space right in front of it. Ron Bartsch, chairman at the Sydney-based AvLaw Aviation Consulting, told the Reuters news agency that seat 11A "was obviously the safest seat" in this particular instance because Ramesh was sitting adjacent to the emergency exit. "But it's not always 11A, it's just 11A on this configuration of the Boeing 787," Bartsch said. Seat configurations vary depending on the aircraft, and many factors are at play when it comes to crash survival. "Each accident is different, and it is impossible to predict survivability based on seat location," said Mitchell Fox, a director at the U.S.-based nonprofit Flight Safety Foundation, according to Reuters. Ramesh was in shock as he walked away from the crash. He was later taken to a hospital in an ambulance. Dr. Dhaval Gameti at Ahmedabad's Civil Hospital told The Associated Press that Ramesh "was disoriented with multiple injuries all over his body" but that he seemed to be "out of danger."
