Giant 50m Ferris wheel to visit Blackburn town centre
A 50m (164ft) observation wheel is coming to a Lancashire town centre following the success of a similar attraction. The Big Wheel will be arriving in Blackburn's Cathedral Square next month, giving guests panoramic views right across the town. A similar giant Ferris wheel attracted crowds in Darwen.Similar in height to 11 stacked double-decker buses and the largest transportable such device in the UK, Blackburn with Darwen Council's Quesir Mahmood said it would be a "spectacle" for the town.
The councillor said: "The views from the top will be incredible – especially over Blackburn Cathedral."The wheel, which will be opposite Blackburn Railway Station, is the largest the Bolton-based The Giant Wheel Company owns. The company's Evan de Koning said: "With fully enclosed gondolas, this is the largest transportable observation wheel in the UK."Riders will be able to visit the wheel from Saturday 3 May until 8 June.
The wheel has previously visited Manchester's Trafford Centre, with the company also supplying wheels for events such as the British Grand Prix at Silverstone and the Isle of Wight Festival. There are 36 gondolas available on the 50m wheel, each with space for six people with an adapted gondola with wheelchair access also available.Tickets will be available for the attraction, which is open from 12:00 BST to 22:00 Sunday to Friday, and 11:00 to 22:00 on Saturdays.

Japan's moon lander ‘crashes AGAIN' in second botched mission as spaceship goes silent just moments before touchdown
A JAPANESE spacecraft attempting a touchdown on the moon has crashed into the surface, the space company said. The unmanned Resilience Moon Lander, from private Japanese astro company ispace, has been declared a failure for a second time. 2 2 Friday's flop follows the failure of the company's first attempt at a moon landing in 2023. Resilience had difficulty measuring the distance between itself and the moon, its makers said, so it careered into the surface going too fast. Following the disappointment, CFO Jumpei Nozaki said: "We're not facing any immediate financial deterioration or distress because of the event." Ispace will now have to wait years before taking another shot at a lunar landing. However, the country remains committed to the mission - and a number of private companies there are looking at moon exploration as a business opportunity. Tokyo-based ispace had hoped to join US firms Intuitive Machines and Firefly Aerospace in making successful commercial moon landings. It comes amid a global race that includes state-run lunar missions from China and India. .

This boutique Melbourne hotel was just honoured with a major style and design award
Hands up if the name La Liste rings a bell? You may recognise it as the Paris-based restaurant ranking guide that unveils an annual list of its top 1,000 restaurants – last year, it crowned Melbourne's very own fine diner Vue de Monde as the best restaurant in Australia (and fifth in the whole world). Now La Liste is back with a hotly anticipated 2025 guide to the most outstanding hotels around the globe. And you may be surprised to hear that a new boutique accommodation in Fitzroy has been awarded a very special accolade. The StandardX – an uber-cool, industrial-style venue that we reviewed in November 2024 – is among just five hotels to receive the prestigious Style and Design Award. These are hotels that have been either "launched or refurbished with outstanding design". La Liste called the StandardX "arty, bold and unfiltered", and it shared the honour with Maison Heler Metz in France, ÖÖD Hekla Horizon in Iceland, Reschio Hotel in Italy and Ulaman Eco Luxury Resort in Indonesia. The hotel only opened in August 2024, and is the first StandardX iteration from famed hotel chain the Standard. Described as "the rebellious younger sibling", it boasts 125 rooms over eight floors, as well as an all-day Thai street food-inspired restaurant called Bang, a rooftop bar with panoramic city views and a retail offering. Led by Melbourne-based interior design firm Hecker Guthrie, the styling elements blend the grittiness of Fitzroy with modern comforts – think rustic finishes, plenty of greenery, caramel leather couches and an epic red revolving front door. "It's bougie, for sure, but still artsy enough to feel like it belongs to the northside," says Time Out Melbourne's food and drink writer, Lauren Dinse. "The designers have taken inspiration from Fitzroy's post-punk 'Little Band' scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s, paying homage to its music venues, street art and café culture – historic pulse points of this vibrant 'hood." The full list of 1,000 hotels included properties from Paris, London and Bangkok. This year, the ten spots to share the top gong with a near-perfect score of 99.5 include: La Réserve Paris, France The Connaught and The Savoy, England Il San Pietro di Positano, Italy Cheval Blanc Paris, France J.K. Place Capri, Italy Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, Thailand The Peninsula Shanghai, China The Peninsula Chicago, USA Rosewood Mayakoba, Mexico To find out more, read the full list here.
