City learn of play-off semi-final opponents for next Tuesday

Yahoo14-05-2025

YORK City now know who they will face in the Vanarama National League play-off semi-final.
Oldham Athletic cruised to a 4-0 victory this evening against FC Halifax Town, meaning it will be the Latics who travel to the LNER Community Stadium for the play-off semi-final on Tuesday, May 20 (7.45pm).
The winner of the match between York and Oldham will then head to Wembley Stadium to take on one of Forest Green Rovers, Rochdale or Southend for a spot in the Football League on Sunday, June 1 (3pm).
It was a disastrous start for Halifax when Oldham found themselves 1-0 up just five minutes in, with Tom Pett's corner being turned home by Joe Garner.
One became two just seven minutes later when another dangerous Pett delivery found Mike Fondop, whose flick into the area found Mark Kitching to finish.
Just two minutes later, Oldham went 3-0 up when Fondop turned goalscorer from provider, heading home Joe Pritchard's cross.
Oldham would have to wait until the 56th minute for a fourth in front of a crowd of over 10,000 at Boundary Park, as Pritchard arrowed an effort into the top left corner from Vimal Yoganathan's through ball.
It sets up the semi-final at the LNER Community Stadium which York have already sold out their home allocation for, playing against a team they beat and drew with during the normal season.
City managed to clinch the three points on their travels to Boundary Park when first-half goals from Malachi Fagan-Walcott and Ollie Pearce sent the Minstermen home happy.
It was a different story when Oldham visited North Yorkshire, as Joe Felix's driven strike on the half-an-hour mark was cancelled out by Joe Raglan in the second-half - much to the frustration of manager Adam Hinshelwood.
The play-off semi-final will take place on Tuesday, May 20 at the LNER Community Stadium (7.45pm).

York City and a ‘3UP' campaign intended to make football a little less silly

FAIR GAME? With a reduced slate of action and few transfers of note this week in the men's or women's game (unless you count Mainz signing forward and renowned Gwen Stefani fan Benedict Hollerbach), and still no word on Arne Slot's new residency in Ibiza, Football Daily was fast running out of content for Tuesday's missive. So thank goodness for the open letter from York City owner Julie-Anne Uggla addressed to the National League and the Football League, regarding the 'structurally unjust' promotion system in the fifth tier of English football, which sees just the regular season winners (this season: Barnet) and one playoff winner go up from six teams, who finished second to seventh. Hurray! Advertisement Uggla is a supporter of the 3UP campaign, which proposes that there should be three (not two) teams promoted from the National League, adopting a similar system to the rest of the Football League. In the Championship, League One and League Two, at least two teams are promoted automatically (three in League Two!), with an additional team going up via the playoffs. It might surprise you to learn that York finished second in the National League, and failed to make the playoff final. Instead, Oldham Athletic, the feeder club of Football Daily's five-a-side team Old and Unathletic, returned to the EFL after beating Southend in the playoff final. For reference, Oldham and Southend finished 23 and 28 points behind York in the regular season, respectively. 'Such a glaring imbalance not only undermines sporting merit but erodes the very foundations of fair competition,' fumed Uggla. 'To dominate a league campaign so comprehensively (Barnet the only exception), only to be forced into a playoff lottery, is structurally unjust. It penalises excellence and rewards clubs with fewer points in a way no professional league system should condone. I urge both governing bodies to urgently consider transitional reform, whether via immediate review, temporary relief measures, or an accelerated implementation of the '3UP' model,' she continued. 'At the very least, this season's outcome should provoke an honest re-evaluation of what fairness in football truly means.' Uggla certainly has a valid point and the principle of fighting for 'fairness' on behalf of all football teams in the National League is a noble one, even if it is slightly soured by the fact that York, having finished second, would have been the key beneficiaries of a change. It might have been stronger for someone without a vested interest to lead the charge here, seeing as York started this season knowing full well what the format and rules were and only initially signed up to the '3UP' model in February, when they were unexpectedly in a three-horse race for the title. Uggla, who bought York in 2023, might also be unaware that the club have benefited from odd football rules of the past: City escaped dropping out of the Football League (the old Third Division) in 1977-78 season when relegation back then was decided not by league placing but by a vote where existing member clubs would just decide which one of the bottom teams would keep their place. Automatic relegation/promotion to/from the fifth tier did not exist at all until 1987, and the second playoff place was only introduced in 2003. All of that aside, Uggla is speaking sense. It is a little silly that York, who finished second on 96 points, were not promoted. But football is a bit silly, and had City instead finished seventh, would Uggla have been so vocal in fighting the good fight? I guess we'll never know. Streaking Nitrogen Could Achieve Millionaire Status In Saturday's Wonder Again

Streaking Nitrogen Could Achieve Millionaire Status In Saturday's Wonder Again originally appeared on Paulick Report. D.J. Stable's Kentucky homebred Nitrogen will chase millionaire status when she brings a four-race win streak into Saturday's Grade 2, $300,000 Wonder Again, a 1 1/16-mile inner turf test for sophomore fillies on Belmont Stakes Day, at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, the Medaglia d'Oro bay has found a new level this year with four wins in as many starts while running her bankroll to $981,604 through a 7-4-1-2 ledger. She graduated in style in the Listed Ginger Brew in January at Gulfstream Park and added the Grade 3 Florida Oaks in March at Tampa Bay Downs, the Grade 2 Appalachian in April at Keeneland and the Grade 2 Edgewood on May 2 at Churchill Downs. Advertisement Last out, she drew off to win by 3 1/2-lengths in the 1 1/16-mile Edgewood under returning pilot Jose Ortiz with an explosive turn-of-foot when asked. 'She's beautiful. She's big and tall. She's never been much of a workhorse so if you watched her work, you would think she was just average, but when she runs, she explodes when Jose asks her the question,' Casse said. Casse noted that Ortiz believes Nitrogen, who will exit post 6 carrying a co-field high 123 pounds, has won with plenty in the tank. 'It would appear that way. Jose certainly feels that way,' Casse said. Although she exited her 2-year-old campaign a maiden after three attempts, she demonstrated her abundant class with a three-quarter length third in the Grade 1 Natalma in September at Woodbine before closing from 12th-of-14 to finish a close third in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in November at Del Mar. Casse indicated that a good result on Saturday would propel Nitrogen to the nine-furlong Grade 1, $500,000 Belmont Oaks Invitational on July 5 during the four-day July 4 Racing Festival at Saratoga. Nitrogen, a half-sister to multiple graded stakes-placed Love to Shop, is out of the stakes-placed Uncle Mo mare Tiffany Case – a half-sister to graded stakes-winner Talk Veuve to Me. Casse also sends out Bessie Abott [post 3, Dylan Davis, 118 pounds], a half-sister to multiple graded stakes-placed Spirit And Glory, who was second to returning rival Al Jafara in her stateside debut in a Keeneland allowance for owners Gary Barber and Team Valor International. Newstead Stables' Laurelin [post 8, Kendrick Carmouche, 120 pounds], an Irish-bred chestnut daughter of Zarak, is undefeated in three starts for trainer Graham Motion. Laurelin has notched all three of her victories with recent recipient of the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award Kendrick Carmouche at the helm at Aqueduct Racetrack, scoring on debut in October traveling 1 1/16-miles. She followed with a victory in the Tepin in November by a half-length over New York-bred Five G, who subsequently won the Cash Run at Gulfstream and later the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks. Last out, in her April 27 seasonal debut, Laurelin posted a game neck victory over pacesetting returning rival Opulent Restraint in the one-mile Listed Memories of Silver with another returning rival, Virgin Colada, in third. There, she stalked Opulent Restraint through splits of 23.11, 48.60 and 1:14.05. Into the final turn, Carmouche tipped Laurelin to the outside of Opulent Restraint as a retreating Burner Account drifted in and caused Italian Soiree to steady and bump with the favored Virgin Colada, who had her rally from last stymied. Opulent Restraint dug in along the rail inside the eighth pole, but Laurelin would not be denied the narrow score in a final time of 1:38.68. 'You can't fault her record, that's for sure. She's done nothing wrong and impressed me every time she's run—particularly last time,' Motion said. 'We have liked her a lot since the day she came to us and she has always been professional. I don't think I've been surprised by any of her races.' Bred in Ireland by M.H. Dixon and Mount Coote Estates, Laurelin was a $169,488 purchase from Book 1 of the 2023 Goffs Orby Yearling Sale and is out of the winning Cape Cross mare Bari, making her a half-sister to Irish stakes-winner Maude Gonne Spirit. Advertisement Five-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown will send out a formidable trio in Opulent Restraint [post 5, Irad Ortiz, Jr., 120 pounds], Virgin Colada [post 4, Joel Rosario, 118 pounds] and Al Jafara [post 1, Flavien Prat, 118 pounds] as he looks for a record-extending seventh win in this event following past success with Lady Eli [2015], New Money Honey [2017], Cambier Parc [2019], Consumer Spending [2022], Prerequisite [2023] and Segesta [2024]. Stephanie Seymour Brant's Opulent Restraint, by Dubawi, captured the Listed Chelsey Flower by a nose traveling 1 1/16-miles in October at Belmont at the Big A. She was a 5 1/4-length fourth to Nitrogen in the Florida Oaks in her seasonal debut ahead of her game Memories of Silver try. 'A nice filly. Headstrong, but solid,' Brown said, as he pursues a fourth consecutive Wonder Again. Opulent Restraint is out of the multiple graded stakes-winning dam Significant Form was second in this event in 2018 for the same connections. Resolute Racing's Virgin Colada, by More Than Ready, graduated at first asking in July at the Spa with a rallying half-length score. She was subsequently second in both the Listed P. G. Johnson at Saratoga and Grade 2 Miss Grillo at Belmont at the Big A before a troubled off-the-board effort in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in November at Del Mar. She will look to get a clean run after traffic trouble last out in her seasonal debut in the Memories of Silver. 'She had a lot of trouble turning for home,' Brown said. Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb and Richard Schermerhorn's Al Jafara was a stylish winner of her stateside debut, closing from last-of-12 and seven lengths off the pace to win the aforementioned 1 1/16-mile allowance on April 12 over good Keeneland turf by 1 3/4-lengths over returning rival Bessie Abott. 'She was kind of a little further behind than I thought she would be, but she sure kicked on Keeneland's turf. Hopefully, she takes to the Saratoga turf,' Brown said. The Pinatubo chestnut made her first two starts in France for trainer Hedi Ghabri, including a maiden win at second asking in September traveling nine furlongs at Chantilly. The $270,611 purchase from the Arqana Saint-Cloud sale is out of the Fastnet Rock mare Predawn, a full-sister to Group 1-winner Qualify and Group 2-placed Shogun. KatieRich Stables' May Day Ready [post 2, Frankie Dettori, 123 pounds] won the Grade 2 Jessamine last year at Keeneland en route to a runner-up effort in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar. Trained by Joe Lee, the Tapit bay completed her campaign with an off-the-board effort in the Group 1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies at Kyoto in Japan. May Day Ready has worked steadily over the Keeneland dirt for her seasonal debut, including a half-mile breeze in 48.80 on May 25. The $325,000 purchase at the OBS Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training is out of the Group 3-winning More Than Ready mare Nemoralia, who was second in the 2015 Grade 1 Frizette and third in the 2015 Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Advertisement A talented group also includes trainer Rusty Arnold's recent maiden winner Love You Anyway [post 7, Luis Saez, 118 pounds], a $450,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase for Bregman Family Racing out of the Grade 3 winning Quality Road mare Princess La Quinta. The Wonder Again is slated as Race 6 on Saturday's 14-race card, headlined by the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets in Race 13. Other Grade 1 action includes the Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan Handicap [Race 8] – a 'Win and You're In' for the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile; the Jaipur [Race 9], a 'Win and You're In' for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint; the Woody Stephens presented by Mohegan Sun [Race 11], and Resorts World Casino Manhattan [Race 12]. The stacked card adds the Grade 3 True North [Race 7] and the Grade 3 Pennine Ridge [Race 10]. First post is 10:45 a.m. and admission gates will open to the public at 9 a.m. This story was originally reported by Paulick Report on Jun 3, 2025, where it first appeared.

"I haven't been home in four days" - Oldham Athletic fans celebrate promotion to Football League

Thousands of Oldham Athletic faithfuls were in full voice as they celebrated the club's return to the Football League. Just over 8,000 fans were at Boundary Park for their play-off final win parade this evening (June 2). Yesterday, The Latics booked their spot in League 2 in a 3-2 victory over Southend United at Wembley in the final of the National League play-offs. The win means promotion to League 2, after three years away. In 2022 the club claimed the unwanted honour of becoming the first former Premier League side to drop into non-league football. Around 21,000 Oldham fans made the trip to Wembley for what was their first visit to the national stadium for over 30 years, since their FA Cup semi-final clash with Manchester United in 1994. Following the heroics, a free party was held at Boundary Park where supporters showered the players with adoration as they made a lap around the pitch, reciprocating the love. Phil Harrop, 50, was at Wembley on Sunday, and despite being back in Oldham and at Boundary Park with his wife Nicola for the parade, he hasn't been home yet. "I bought this t-shirt on Wednesday, and I thought I better wear it because I might never wear it again after Sunday. I've had it on for four days now." He explained to the M.E.N. "I went to London, stayed in Watford, went to the game, drove back from Watford, went to the Fox and Pine in Oldham and then I came straight here. "This means so much to the town. It means so much for anybody who bothers to support Oldham Athletic." Adam Kershaw was also at Wembley with his family, he told the M.E.N: "I just wanted to have a day out at Wembley. I just wanted to experience that with my son and wife. "It was the best feeling in the world walking down Wembley Way with your eight-year-old lad, honestly, the best feeling in the world. "He's only ever known us in non-league so it felt special. It was kind of a big two fingers up to his mates who support United and City. "He went into school this morning with a scarf, bragging about how he's been to Wembley." Jack Lusty, 29 and his mate Liam Paull, 30, could barely speak with their voices still recovering from the weekend. Nonetheless, they stressed how important the win was for the town. Liam said: "We've been nothing since I've started supporting Oldham, it's been thirty years of misery. "I didn't cry when my child was born, but I shed a few tears. When we won, I was full of tears! "What's massive about the win is, if you look around, it's the amount of children. All they know is that Oldham have just done that. These children will be coming here now instead of City or United." "No one will understand the journey we've been on to get that moment." Added Jack. "That's what makes it so special. "Hopeful it's the first of many now and we're back on our way up."
