UCT student Ntokozo Makhaza on cloud nine following Springboks alignment camp call-up

News2421-05-2025

Makhaza is among the country's top 54 players for the Springboks alignment camp.
This achievement marks an important milestone for him and university rugby in SA.
Makaza says he aims to absorb everything he will be exposed to at the camp.
From Varsity Cup to the Springboks! This is the story of Ntokozo Makhaza, the 23-year-old University of Cape Town (UCT) student, who earned a spot in the Springboks alignment camp that is set to begin on 22 May.
This achievement marks a significant milestone for Makhaza and university rugby in South Africa.
According to UCT spokesperson Velisile Bukula, Makhaza's spot in the camp has ranked him among the country's top 54 players eligible for national selection, an achievement for someone who has not yet joined a professional rugby team and is still finishing his degree at UCT.
Born in Harrismith in the Free State, Makhaza grew up playing soccer but switched to rugby in primary school, where he fell in love with the sport.
Inspired by players such as Patrick Lambie, he found his place on the field as a fast backline player.
The youngster excitedly said that, when the Springbok management contacted him, he thought they wanted to congratulate him on the Varsity Cup season.
I'm a bit nervous but excited. I'm just happy and motivated to see that people are watching and monitoring varsity rugby. It inspired me to believe more that the dreams I have are possible.
Ntokozo Makhaza
He said if anyone had told him a few years back or even at the beginning of this year that he would be part of the Springbok alignment camp he would have laughed at them.
'To me, it's an honour, and I'm privileged and humbled.'
Makhaza is looking forward to everything he will be taught and exposed to at the camp.
'To be in the camp is an awesome opportunity for learning for me. My main goal is to learn and absorb as much as I can so that, when I join the Cheetahs, I'm better than when I was here at UCT. I'm always looking to improve, and I know the camp will provide me with a lot of detail; I will find a lot of growth there,' he explained.
Bukula said the Springbok invitation was an added milestone for Makhaza as he dominated the 2025 Varsity Cup, guiding the UCT Ikey Tigers to victory and receiving both player of the year and backline player of the year honours for the second consecutive year.
In this year's Varsity Cup, Makhaza scored 32 points in the Varsity Cup final against Stellenbosch University, leading UCT to the championship and finishing the season with 155 points.
They're giving youngsters a chance, and I want to make the most of that. It's about learning, growing and giving my best.
Ntokozo Makhaza
Makhaza is set to join the Free State Cheetahs in July for the upcoming Currie Cup season.
The manager of UCT Sport and Recreation, Mark Bashe, explained that Makhaza's selection was a historic moment for UCT and university sport in SA.
'This achievement proves that when a student athlete performs at an exceptional level, they are not only recognised by our coaches and provincial selectors but also by national coaches. It's virtually unheard of for a player to be invited to a Springbok alignment camp without first playing for a professional team.'
He added that he was thrilled and incredibly proud of Makhaza, as he had gone directly from a university player to being signed by the Cheetahs and now catching the eye of Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus.
'This shows that UCT Rugby is developing top-tier talent capable of competing on the national stage,' he said.
Makhaza is pursuing a degree in psychology and social development at the university. He is one course short of completing his degree and is set to graduate early in 2026.

Presiding judge at Senzo Meyiwa's murder trial causes uproar after racial remarks spark controversy

It's been years since Senzo Meyiwa's tragic death left South African soccer fans reeling with sadness. His murder trial has been a complex and emotional journey for all involved, and the presiding judge's latest remarks have thrown a wrench into the works leaving many questions raised about his impartiality in the case. Read more | 'Her presence touched the lives of so many' – Gogo Manzini passes away The trial of the five men accused of murdering Senzo Meyiwa, the former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, has been marred by controversy. During a court session, Judge Mokgoatlheng made comments suggesting black legal professionals behave unprofessionally compared to their white counterparts. This comes after Judge Mokgoatlheng received a message sent to his registrar - notifying the court that the lawyer representing two of the accused, Adv. Charles Mnisi would not be present in court on Monday, June 9, 2025, because he would be participating in the Comrades Marathon on Sunday and would only be driving back to Gauteng the following day which will be the Monday, June 9, set for the court day. Judge Mokgoatlheng didn't welcome the news positively as he said 'this is what happens in a South Africa run by blacks... I don't think a white advocate would have the gall to ask me that.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ngada Attorneys (@yourladyship01) The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development has expressed grave concern over the judge's remarks. Chairperson Xola Nqola has in an issued statement demanded that Judge Mokgoatlheng withdraw his comments and apologise to the nation. 'Whilst we understand the frustration of the judge, the families and accused with the duration of the trial, it is totally unacceptable to imply black legal professionals act unprofessionally compared to their white counterparts. We urge him to refrain from such gross generalisations,' part of the statement reads. Chairperson Xola Nqola's statement Social media users have weighed in on the issue with many saying they don't believe the judge intended to make a broader comment about race and professionalism but rather he meant to criticise the defense's strategy and it's unfortunate that his words have been widely interpreted as a racial slight, while others want him to recuse himself from the case as they don't trust his ability to remain partial.

Goosen, who has had an on-and-off season with injury and last played for the Bulls against Cardiff in their penultimate game of the regular season, is the only change to the starting line-up in place of Keagan Johannes. Johannes, who has delivered strong performances when filling in for Goosen, moves to the bench where backline player Stedman Gans makes way. The Bulls have named Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Johan Grobbelaar and Wilco Louw to face up to the Sharks' Bok front row, while Cameron Hanekom, Marcell Coetzee and Ruan Nortje make up a formidable loose trio. Willie le Roux is at fullback, with Canan Moodie and Sebastian de Klerk the fliers on the wings. Etzebeth, who has spent substantial time on the sidelines this season, will miss the Sharks' biggest game of the season. Sharks coach John Plumtree said on Friday that Etzebeth suffered a head knock during training earlier this week and a call was made not to field him this weekend. 'He took a knock a head knock at training and we decided that it's best not to risk him this week,' Plumtree said. 'We made a pretty early call and he's feeling a lot better, by the way. He's been communicating with me and the team. 'I'm not too concerned and, if we go through, he'll be available for next week." Etzebeth is expected to be with the Springboks on Sunday as he is part of the recently announced training squad. The 33-year-old has joined his lock partner, Jason Jenkins, who is also on the mend after leaving the field with an injury in last weekend's quarter-final clash against Munster. Plumtree's hand has been forced in starting with the lock pairing of Corne Rahl and Emile van Heerden. The Sharks' forward pack is made up of an all-Springbok front row in Ox Nche, Bongi Mbonambi and Vincent Koch. Siya Kolisi will captain the team in the No 8 jersey, with James Venter and Vincent Tshituka completing the loose trio. The Hendrikse brothers, Jaden and Jordan, will form the halfback pairing with Andre Esterhuizen and Lukhanyo Am in midfield. Makazole Mapimpi and Ethan Hooker will be on the wings with Aphelele Fassi at fullback. The one change on the bench that stands out is Jurenzo Julius taking the place of Francois Venter.
