Medlab Middle East spotlights AI in African diagnostics as the 24th edition of the event concludes
Amid rapid transformation in Africa's healthcare sector, Medlab Middle East hosted a dedicated session today on 'Doing Business in Africa - Transforming Diagnostic Business Models with AI and other Technologies to Access New Markets'. Led by the African Business Coalition for Health (ABCHealth), the event brought together industry leaders, policymakers and healthcare innovators to explore AI-driven solutions and the technological advancements shaping Africa's diagnostics landscape.
With growing healthcare demands and underserved markets, Africa presents significant opportunities for businesses leveraging AI, automation and data-driven solutions. The ABCHealth session highlighted the innovative approaches, key market-entry strategies, and technology-driven collaborations that enable businesses to tap into Africa's dynamic and evolving healthcare ecosystem, fostering sustainable growth and improved health outcomes.
During the welcome address, Dr Mories Atoki, CEO, African Business Coalition for Health (ABCHealth), Nigeria said: 'Whether you represent a government body, a private enterprise, or an academic institution, the contributions today matter. Together, we have the opportunity to overcome barriers and harness the power of artificial intelligence and other technologies to transform the diagnostics business models that will define the future of healthcare in the African continent. Today is about maximising the opportunities to exchange ideas, network, connect and inspire one another.'
The opening keynote session by Professor Hatem Mostafa ElGabaly, Former Minister of Health, Egypt, highlighted the importance of African countries and the opportunities to support and promote businesses from the country.
He said, 'The current state of health diagnostics in Africa is prohibited by the limited access to advanced diagnostic tools. In some regions, there is only one radiologist per 500,000 people. In addition, there is a high disease burden with an inadequate healthcare infrastructure. Africa accounts for 24% of the global disease burden but only 3% of the global health workforce. This underscores the importance of investment, which has the potential to improve health outcomes and economic growth, as well as utilising technology to leapfrog traditional healthcare models.'
In addition to the Africa-focused session, Medlab Middle East has hosted two high-level breakfast forums this week, which brought together global and regional laboratory leaders to discuss the key issues shaping the future of diagnostics and healthcare.
The Global Lab Leaders Breakfast Forum gathered Medlab portfolio global advisers, scientific chairs, international partners and stakeholders to tackle the global harmonisation of laboratory practices. Discussions at the new forum also explored the critical role of labs in managing global health crises, fostering international collaboration, and shaping the future of laboratory medicine.
Themed 'Strengthening cooperation amongst laboratories in the GCC', the GCC Lab Leaders Forum at Medlab Middle East brought together officials, experts and specialists from both public and private sector laboratories and national standardisation bodies across the region. The forum focused on strengthening laboratory networks region-wide, with topics addressed including career pathways for medical laboratory professionals and the formation of a GCC medical lab alliance.
Medlab Middle East concludes today having featured over 800 exhibitors from over 40 countries and welcoming an expected attendee count of 20,000 visitors. In addition to the ABCHealth Forum and Leaders' Breakfast Forums, new features this year have included the Women's Health Leadership Forum, Precision Medicine Leadership Forum and the CME-accredited Lab Automation conference track.
The event has brought together exhibitors and visitors from more than 180 countries, providing an unrivalled platform to showcase the latest innovations and discover a wide variety of cutting-edge medical laboratory products and services.
The key product categories showcased at Medlab Middle East are Disposable, Healthcare/General Services, Imaging, Infrastructure, IT, Laboratory, Medical Equipment and Pharma/Nutrition. Industry leaders featured at the event include Al Borg Diagnostics, Fujifilm Middle East FZE, Horiba ABX SAS, Sysmex Middle East, Randox Laboratories and Snibe.
After 24 years of success, Medlab Middle East is evolving into WHX Labs Dubai, uniting with the World Health Expo (WHX) to foster greater global collaboration, innovation and impact in the laboratory industry. WHX Labs Dubai will be joined by city-based events in Lagos, Cape Town, Nairobi, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok to strengthen relationships and accelerate knowledge sharing. The inaugural WHX Labs Dubai will take place from 9 to 12 February,2026.

Did a leaked report prove Imane Khelif is a biological male?
Published June 2nd, 2025 - 06:21 GMT ALBAWABA - Imane Khelif has once again been targeted on social media after leaked medical reports were released into the public domain, indicating that the Algerian boxing champion is a biological male, according to 3 Wire Sports. This all comes after Khelif sparked widespread controversy for copping the gold medal against Italy's Angela Carini during the 2024 Olympic Games. 36 hours after her win, Khelif was notified that she needed to undergo a sex test if she wanted to partake in future international competitions. On Friday, World Boxing announced a new policy stating that athletes over the age of 18 will have to undergo a sex test. World Boxing has been officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and will supervise boxing in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, as reported by Roya News. The organization wrote in a statement, "Imane Khelif may not participate in the female category at … any World Boxing event until Imane Khelif undergoes genetic sex screening in accordance with World Boxing's rules and testing procedures." 🚨A blood test leaked by Olympic press committee member Alan Abrahamson confirms that Algerian boxer Imane Khelif is male. The test was conducted in 2023 at the request of the IBA, and resulted in Khelif being disqualified from the women's world boxing championship in New Delhi. — REDUXX (@ReduxxMag) June 1, 2025 The document released by 3 Wire Sports indicates that the results came out "abnormal," further stating that the chromosome analysis revealed a "male karyotype." According to the National Institutes of Health, (XY) chromosomes indicate a male karyotype while (XX) is identified as a female karyotype. The test results were done by "Dr Lal PathLabs," a medical laboratory in New Delhi. It was created by the Northfield, Illinois-based College of American Pathologists (CAP) and certified by Switzerland's International Organization for Standardization (ISO). (Dr Lal PathLabs/ Obtained by 3 Wire Sports) While the professional Algerian boxer is yet to release a statement about the issue at hand, she has constantly stood her ground on being a biological woman, despite being subjected to hate and bullying. She said after winning at the 2024 Paris Olympics, "I am a woman, like any other woman. I was born a woman. I have lived as a woman. I compete as a woman." Khelif also stated that she competed in several competitions in the past. However, it was when she started achieving success that the hate campaigns against her were initiated. Since then, she has made several public appearances, including attending the Bottega Veneta fashion show in a mustard-colored dress, and was featured on the cover of Vogue Magazine. © 2000 - 2025 Al Bawaba (

Cholera outbreak kills 172 in 7 days in Sudan
Published May 27th, 2025 - 11:34 GMT ALBAWABA - The Health Ministry announced on Tuesday that at least 172 people were in a cholera outbreak in Sudan in one week. According to the International Rescue Committee (IRC), more than 60,000 reported cases of acute watery diarrhea/cholera have been reported in Sudan since August 2024. Furthermore, the organization also added earlier that more than 1,600 cholera-related deaths were announced across the country. Eatizaz Yousif, IRC's Sudan Country Director, said, "Sudan is on the brink of a full-scale public health disaster. The combination of conflict, displacement, destroyed critical infrastructure, and limited access to clean water is fueling the resurgence of cholera and other deadly diseases. With the rainy season fast approaching, the need for immediate, coordinated action could not be more urgent." This captures the scale of the cholera crisis in Omdurman.
