DIRTY DOZEN The TWELVE clubs Rangers could face in Champions League qualifying second round plus nightmare opponents lying in wait
RANGERS' Champions League qualifying fate is sealed - or at least they now know what round they'll be entering.
Athletic Bilbao's Europa League demise against Man Utd last night confirms that the Ibrox men will enter at the second qualifying round stage, and face three arduous rounds of qualifying to reach the moneyspinning £40million league phase for the first time.

It also means that the incoming Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises regime at the club must get up and running early.
That 's because the first leg has been scheduled for July 22/23, with the return fixture taking place the following week on either July 29 or July 30 - where a third round entry would have afforded them another fortnight of prep before a big kick off on August 5/6.
They're one of SIX teams who will enter the competition at this second round non-champions path stage - with the identities of three of them known already.
And we also know the Rangers WILL be seeded in this round of the competition at least, with a decent chance of being seeded all the way through.

But who exactly could they face? Well, SunSport has had a look around Europe ahead of a frantic final few weeks so you don't have to.
And here are the answers.
It's worth noting that there's some tight title races out there, and indeed some massive title showdowns taking place this weekend.
But here's the TWELVE teams who are still theoretically at least potential opponents at this stage.

SK Brann
The Gers already know they have a one in three chance of facing the Bergen-based side. And they are no mugs, currently topping the Norwegian top flight for the new season, after last season's second placed finish.

Got past St Mirren in Conference League qualifying last year after a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Paisley, and squad is almost entirely Scandinavian.
Panathinaikos
The Greek runners up are the only other team who have already definitely booked their spot in this second qualifying round.

There's a chance that they and Gers will both be seeded and consequently kept APART at this stage but it's by no means a guarantee.

And a trip to the white hot atmosphere of Athens might not be ideal for a new Rangers manager to cut their teeth in, with the Greeks skippered by Fotis Ioannidis, one of the men who destroyed Scotland in the Nations League playoffs recently.
Servette (or Young Boys or Lugano or Luzern or Lausanne)
With Basel's superior goal difference meaning they're champions in all but name, it's currently Servette who are on track to finish second and potentially find themselves in the Ibrox side's path.

These two sides met in Champions League qualifying action as recently as the season before last - with Rangers edging through 3-2 on aggregate courtesy of a James Tavernier goal in the second leg in Geneva.
If it is Servette who make it they'll likely be unseeded and therefore in Rangers' path, but Young Boys and Luzern are particularly close on their heels and could yet overtake them.

Former Gers star Cedric Itten's Young Boys - who went down narrowly at Celtic Park in the Champions League this season - will still fancy their chances of finishing second and making it into the second round of qualifying.

Their 34.5 coefficient would ensure them of seeding at this round and keep them apart from Gers - UNLESS Red Bull Salzburg finish second in Austria.
On the other hand, with only five points separating five teams in the fiendish Swiss playoff system even Lugano, Luzern or Lausanne could jump into second in the league with four games to play.
All would be likely unseeded and potential second round opponents for Rangers should they finish second when it is all said and done.
(Sparta Prague or Banik Ostrava)
Slavia Prague are champs again in Czechia - that means they're set to benefit from the SPFL's old automatic spot and go straight into the new Champions League phase.

Behind them there's a bit of a bunfight with three games remaining - but Viktoria Plzen are currently in the box seat.
But Plzen's heroics in Europe in recent seasons and bumper 39.25 coefficient means they will be seeded too and hence kept apart from Rangers at this stage.
The same COULD potentially apply if Gers' old rivals Sparta Prague (29) overtake Plzen to finish second but it wouldn't if Banik Ostrava crash the party.
They would be unseeded and potentially in the Gers' path.

Austria Vienna (or Sturm Graz or Wolfsberger)
The biggest kicker of all comes in Austria, where there's now a stunning FOUR-WAY battle for the title.
Max Johnston's Sturm Graz currently lead the way from Austria Vienna, then Wolfsberger and Red Bull Salzburg - with the four teams separated by just four points and each with three games to play.

It's dramatic stuff and RB Salzburg are the only team the Gers COULDN'T face in the second round as they would both be seeded.

Johnston's Graz could thus still theoretically face Rangers (or even Celtic), while Austria Vienna or Wolfsberger are also potential second round foes for the Gers.
And then what happens...
Well, put simply things don't get any easier any time soon - even though the Gers WILL still be seeded in the third qualifying round.
That's protection they could badly need with the second placed team in Belgium (almost certainly an excellent Club Brugge side), and the second team in Portugal (Benfica and Sporting Libson are currently dead level on points) entering at this stage.
So too does the fourth placed team in France (currently Nice) and the third placed team in Netherlands (currently Feyenoord) entering at this stage.

And the really bad news for the Ibrox men comes in the playoff round, if they're still standing - where there's no guarantee that they will still be seeded.

Joining Larne was the best move I made, but I'm home for my daughter, says ex-Accies ace

Shaun Want is back in Scotland and looking for a club after three years in Northern Ireland Rutherglen ace Shaun Want says moving to Larne in Northern Ireland was the best decision of his career – but needs a return to Scotland after the birth of his infant daughter. Larne finished second in the Northern Ireland Football League Premiership, qualifying for the Europa Conference League play-off, but Want is out of contract after three years at the club. ‌ A contract extension offer was on the table, but 28-year-old Want has opted to return home for family reasons. ‌ Larne's Player of the Year, Players' Player of the Year, and also the recipient of three fans' Player of the Year awards, wants a return to Scotland, following the birth of daughter Amelia seven months ago. He said: 'I'm out of contract, and they've offered me one, but I'm not long having a baby, I have a seven-month old daughter, so I'm looking at my options. 'There's more to life than football, now, when you have a wee one. I've been living away and for seven months I've been back and forth. 'I've got to the stage now that I just want to be closer to home and be with my daughter every day. 'It has been brilliant at Larne – if it was a different situation I'd still be here, because I've loved every minute of it. 'It was a good season. We finished second in the league and qualified for Europe, and it was a good season for me, personally, with all the awards. ‌ 'We reached the league phase of the Conference League last season, which was an added bonus, and with us finishing second, we qualified for the play-offs for the Conference League.' Want came up through the youth set-up at Hamilton Accies, but left there for Larne in 2022. ‌ He said: 'It's the best decision I've made for me, personally, in my career. Playing in Europe and winning leagues is something I never thought I'd be able to achieve. 'I was at Hamilton for 13 years, and there were ups and downs, but I think it got to the point where I needed a fresh start. 'I think I went at the right time and I got that fresh start, I was there for so long, but I have nothing bad to say ‌ about the club. I wasn't playing every week at Hamilton, because I'd been there for so long I think I ended up being part of the furniture, and I think it was just the right thing for me to get a fresh start. 'I went to Larne, basically as an unknown, and I've loved every minute. 'Going there was a whole different experience, but my circumstances have changed, and I need to get back home for the family.' ‌ Want added: 'If I'm coming back to Scotland, I'm coming back a better player and a much better person, too. 'I'm realistic enough to know that Premiership would be hard to get, so I'm probably looking for an opportunity in the Championship. ‌ 'I want an opportunity to come back to Scotland and prove my ability here, because I've been over in Northern Ireland for three or four years. 'I feel that I would be coming back as a better player.' A statement from Larne read: 'We can confirm that Shaun Want will depart the club upon the expiry of his contract this month, returning to Scotland for family reasons. 'The club respects Shaun's decision to put family first and wishes him the best of luck at his next club. Thank you for your time as an Inver Red.'

I was Russell Martin's Rangers teammate and shared dressing room with Conor Coady - they can be perfect match at Ibrox

Jamie Murphy has given the lowdown on the central defender who is an Ibrox target Russell Martin arrived at Ibrox aged 32 with his playing days numbered. But Jamie Murphy reckons a move to Rangers could add up to an extended run for Conor Coady 's career. ‌ Record Sport revealed last week that the Leicester centre-back is being lined up to become Martin's first signing since taking over as Gers boss. ‌ The ex-England defender is the same age as Martin was when he checked in for a brief four-month stint in the Light Blues backline. That 2018 switch didn't go as the former Scotland international would have hoped, though, with Martin admitting himself that he was nowhere near his physical peak during an ill-fated 17-game loan spell. But Murphy believes a hook-up with the new Ibrox gaffer could be just what his former Sheffield United team-mate Coady needs to eek a few more years out of his own legs. The former Gers winger knows both men having shared the Ibrox dressing with Martin while having also played alongside Coady during his younger days as an exciting Liverpool prospect on loan at Brammall Lane. And he's excited to see how Coady's years of Premier League experience fit into the new expansive style of play Martin is plotting for Gers. ‌ He told Record Sport: 'In terms of attitude, you could see every day the example Russell set when he came to the club. 'He worked hard, he was in the gym, training properly, he was eating the right things, doing everything to be a professional. I learned a lot from him doing that. 'But obviously, as Russell said himself, he wasn't quite happy with how things were for him up here. But I think that goes the same for everyone who played for Rangers at that time. ‌ 'That team wasn't a real good side at that point, we were still rebuilding to get to the stage where the club got to under Steven Gerrard. 'It was a real transition period for the club, and certainly the results weren't down to Russell's performance. But as for Conor, even being aged 32 he will believe he can come up here and play a big role. 'It's completely different playing up here in Scotland to playing down in England, so he'll have to get used to that pretty quickly if he signs. ‌ 'But he's got the mentality to do that, his attitude was always spot on, and I'm sure he'll take it all in his stride. And I think Russell's possession-heavy style of play will help. 'Playing with the ball obviously helps, there's not as much chasing, and obviously it affects your body when you have to work harder. ‌ 'When you have the ball and you can keep it, and your job's just to recycle the ball and give it to other players, then yeah, I think you can play a lot longer. 'How long? I don't know, but it's certainly easier than chasing the ball all the time!' Rangers are now pursuing a player with 500 career appearances under his belt - almost 200 of them in England's top division. ‌ But Murphy remembers a different player and character from their 12-month stint together in the Steel City. 'We got Coady on loan from Liverpool,' he recalled. 'You could see immediately he was a good person, a likeable guy. 'He came to us as a centre midfielder actually. He played a No8 role for us, so it's been interesting to see how he's changed over the last decade. ‌ 'Since then he's played centre-half and holding midfield. But obviously he made his name at Wolves as that middle centre-half in a back three. It's been great to see him do really well.' Coady was a near ever present during his seven year stint at Molineaux - missing only one Premier League game after helping Wanderers to promotion in 2018. It was that year the loquacious Scouser was made captain - with his communications skills key to his brand of leadership. ‌ But Ayr player-coach Murphy recalled: 'Being a younger player at the time I played with him, he wasn't as vocal as he is now. He was very much willing to learn when he came. 'We had a lot of younger players come in on loan from different places, but he was the one whose attitude stood out more than everyone else. 'You get a lot of young players who go out on loan and don't take it seriously, who just go through the motions. But Connor was there to do well, and he did do well. He scored a good few goals too. ‌ 'We had a really good FA Cup run at the time. I remember him scoring a big goal for us against Nottingham Forest in the fifth round. We eventually made the semi-finals before losing to Hull but I would think that loan definitely helped him. 'He just had that determination to succeed. There's certain players where it's not all about ability. You can see the ones who stand out in training. 'But then you see the ones that have got the attitude of turning up every day, being a professional, doing the right things and always learning, and he was like that. ‌ 'He was the captain in the under-20s for England. And coming from Liverpool, you obviously have to be a good player as well, so he really was for us.' Martin has already ruled out stripping current Gers captain James Tavernier of the armband. ‌ But with Coady potentially stood alongside the skipper in the team, Murphy insists he won't have to. He said: 'Conor would be a great fit. Obviously, he's become a real leader as he's got older, you can tell from watching games. 'I don't know what formation Russell's going to play, but Conor can play in midfield, he can play at the back, he can play right back if you need some cover for Tav. But I'm sure he'll slot in well if he does decide to come. 'As for the captaincy, Rangers have Tav. He was a real leader when I was at the club and he's continued to be, so I can't imagine much changing with that. But I think Rangers need lots of people that are willing to lead like that. "John Soutter looks as if he's a bit like that as well, leading the team, so having another one there is definitely going to help. And I think Conor will.'

Phone call could see Arsenal lose out on Zubimendi deal as Ian Wright makes plea

Arsenal have been chasing Martin Zubimendi but Real Madrid are looking to swoop in and steal a march as Ian Wright urges the Gunners to consider a move for Ademola Lookman Arsenal are yet to make a signing this summer but there is plenty bubbling away at the Emirates with several new faces on their radar. A new striker is a priority for Mikel Arteta and co as they look to end their Premier League wait. Benjamin Sesko is their prime target as they look to land a No 9 who can be a regular supply of goals. Just behind him and Martin Zubimendi is also on their radar having been a long-term target. It was previously reported that an agreement was close, but that could no longer the case. ‌ A cut-price deal for Kepa Arrizabalaga, the Chelsea star who remains the world's most expensive goalkeeper, is also in the pipeline. The Spaniard could be available for just £5million. ‌ Arteta has also seen several players leave this summer, the likes of Jorginho and Kieran Tierney, which means a lot of experience has left the building. Thomas Partey's deal expires in June but talks are ongoing regarding an extension. Here's the latest news coming out of north London. Zubimendi phone call could curtail transfer Arsenal are sweating on a move for Real Sociedad midfielder Zubimendi after Real Madrid stepped up their interest in the Spain international, according to reports. Zubimendi has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates and it was thought a deal was practically agreed ahead of the summer transfer window. According to Marca, a deal for Zubimendi has become more complicated after Madrid joined the chase for the player, with "real interest" from Xabi Alonso's side as they bid to replace the outgoing Luka Modric. Zubimendi will now be eager to sort out his future, which remains up in the air despite appearing destined for Arsenal. The report from Marca claims he received a phone call from Madrid that has "changed everything". Wright's transfer wish Ian Wright has urged Arsenal to sign Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman this summer, stating that the Nigerian has 'unfinished business' in the Premier League. Now 27, he has spent the past three seasons with Serie A overachievers Atalanta, where his performances have caught the eye - not least his stunning hat-trick in the Europa League final 12 months ago. ‌ Gunners legend Wright named Lookman as a player he would like to see at the Emirates Stadium next season. The former striker was asked about some of his favourite moments of the season on his Wrighty's House podcast earlier this month. He said: 'I'm going to go with Ademola Lookman winning the African Player of the Year in respects of that man's journey. 'I remember him from Charlton, it didn't work out [the] £10million [move] to Everton, then moving all over the place, the journey from loan to this. Then I think that's one of the most devastating performances I've seen in any final with that hat-trick he scored. I hope we can buy him, Arsenal. I would love someone like him to come back to the Premier League and say, 'Listen, I have unfinished business here so I am going to help Arsenal win the league'." Lineker surprised by Delap stance Gary Lineker has expressed his surprise that Arsenal overlooked Liam Delap in their quest for a new striker. The 22-year-old forward recently joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town. The Gunners have identified signing a new number nine as a priority in the summer transfer window but opted against going after Delap - instead identifying the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Sesko. ‌ "Delap to Chelsea, interesting one," Lineker said on The Rest Is Football podcast. "I thought maybe Arsenal would go for him. Perhaps they did, I don't know, but Chelsea have got their man. "We'd said, didn't we, many times that Chelsea needed backup for [Nicolas] Jackson up top or an alternative. I think he's a young, exciting centre forward. I saw someone, I can't remember who it was, said they saw a bit of a young Alan Shearer in him."
