
An Unlikely Climate Hero Is Making A Comeback

The most remarkable image in National Geographic's upcoming feature isn't what you might expect. It's not a lion on the savannah or a polar bear on retreating ice. It's a beaver—swimming beneath a frozen pond. A single shot, years in the making, quietly captures one of the most important comeback stories in North American ecology.
To get it, photographer Ronan Donovan and photo engineer Tom O'Brien had to build a custom underwater camera rig, designed to function beneath ice in shallow, silty water. 'Shooting underwater is hard enough,' said O'Brien. 'Shooting under the ice is even harder. Ronan had to photograph beavers in their habitat, near their dens, which raised so many issues—from silt being disturbed to keeping all the equipment powered for long periods in freezing temperatures. Everything had to be robust, waterproof, and reconfigurable.'
The result: a breathtaking view few humans have ever seen—and a visual symbol of a species that may hold the key to environmental resilience.
Beavers were once everywhere across North America. Then came the fur trade. Hunted nearly to extinction for their pelts, they were later branded a nuisance for flooding farmland and chewing through timber. By the early 20th century, their numbers had dropped dramatically. But today, they're back—10 to 15 million of them, according to recent estimates.
And now, they're being recognized not as pests, but as partners in ecological repair.
Beavers build dams. That much is well known. But those dams do more than create ponds. They slow the flow of water, reduce erosion, and replenish groundwater. They create habitats for fish, amphibians, birds, and other mammals. They reshape entire ecosystems, often in ways that benefit humans too.
One of the most compelling aspects of the beaver resurgence is their growing role in wildfire resilience. Emily Fairfax, an ecohydrologist now at the University of Minnesota, has studied how landscapes influenced by beaver activity behave during wildfires. Her peer-reviewed study, 'Smokey the Beaver,' published in Ecological Applications in 2020, found that beaver ponds and canals help irrigate the land, transforming typically flammable terrain into green, moist zones that resist ignition.
Fairfax's research examined satellite data across multiple fire events in the western United States from 2000 to 2018. The evidence suggested that areas shaped by beaver engineering consistently stayed greener and cooler during wildfires, providing natural refuge for wildlife and livestock.
These findings were tested further during the 2020 East Troublesome Fire in Colorado—one of the largest in the state's history. When Fairfax later surveyed the scorched region, she observed that the lush corridors maintained by beaver dams had endured even as surrounding forests were decimated. These wetland pockets didn't just survive—they actively helped mitigate the impact of megafires fueled by climate change.
Her work illustrates a growing understanding in the scientific community: the way beavers manage water and shape vegetation isn't just ecologically valuable—it could be essential in an era of more extreme and frequent wildfires.

As climate change reshapes the landscape, beavers are adapting—and helping us adapt in return.
In the American West, where snowpack levels are dropping, beaver dams hold water in the landscape longer. They mimic the function of natural reservoirs, easing the impact of drought. A growing number of states are investing in beaver restoration programs, seeing the species as a low-cost, high-impact solution to water scarcity and ecosystem degradation.
In Alaska and Canada, beavers are pushing north, moving into tundra regions where warmer temperatures have made new territory accessible. While their expansion into the Arctic brings new ecological questions, it also shows their remarkable resilience.
And in cities like New York, they're even staging urban comebacks. Beavers have recolonized parts of the Bronx River and Staten Island, building dams and carving wetlands in places once written off as lost to development.
Technology is now helping us see the full impact of these animals—literally. Satellite imagery is being used to map beaver activity across landscapes, tracking how their dam-building behavior shapes the flow of rivers and the spread of vegetation. This kind of data is helping scientists understand how wildlife can support climate adaptation at scale.
That brings us back to Donovan's image. It's more than a technical feat. It's a visual cue that reminds us to look deeper—beneath the ice, beneath the surface of conventional narratives.
There's a quiet power in this photo. It captures a moment, but it also captures a movement—one that's been building for decades and now finds its place in a warming, fire-prone world.
Beavers aren't a silver bullet. But their return shows what's possible when we work with nature instead of against it. Their dams are blueprints for resilience.
As fire seasons lengthen and water becomes more precious, it's worth asking: What if the best solutions aren't always new? What if, sometimes, the answer is a tail-slap in a frozen pond?

How optical illusions are illuminating vital medical research
New York — At the Museum of illusions in New York City, around every corner is a wonder for the eyes. There's a vase that's a face, art that moves with you, and a room that seems to go on forever. It's a funhouse for our perceptions, built for the TikTok age. But the visual tricks are windows into how the mind works, and they fascinate scientists. "The brain uses all the information it can get to figure out what's in front of it," Dr. Martin Doherty, a psychology professor at the University of East Anglia in England, told CBS News. Doherty has studied one particular puzzle for years called the Ebbinghaus illusion, an optical illusion which shows how size perception can be manipulated using surrounding shapes. "The illusion works by using context to mess around with your perception," Doherty explains. Doherty long thought that everyone saw the Ebbinghaus illusion the same way. But in a study published in March in the journal Scientific Reports , he and his colleagues found that radiologists who have years of training to ignore visual distractions actually see the image differently and accurately. In the study, researchers tested 44 experts in "medical image interpretation" — radiographers and radiologists — against a control group of nonexperts consisting of psychology and medical students. They found that the experts were "significantly less susceptible to all illusions except for the Shepard Tabletops, demonstrating superior perceptual accuracy." "According to the theory, that shouldn't happen," Doherty said. "It shouldn't be possible. No previous research has shown that you can learn to see through them." One other group has also been shown to solve the illusion, young children. But that ability goes away after age 7, Doherty said. "We think that's because it takes time to learn to integrate context into your perception," Doherty said. It's evidence of the deep abilities of a trained brain. But for most of us, illusions are proof of our limitations. "When you see these visuals, it's just like your brain just starts going crazy," museumgoer Kevin Paguay said. It's also a reminder that you cannot always believe what you see.

New York passes a bill to prevent AI-fueled disasters
New York state lawmakers passed a bill on Thursday that aims to prevent frontier AI models from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic from contributing to disaster scenarios, including the death or injury of more than 100 people, or more than $1 billion in damages. The passage of the RAISE Act represents a win for the AI safety movement, which has lost ground in recent years as Silicon Valley and the Trump Administration have prioritized speed and innovation. Safety advocates including Nobel prize laureate Geoffrey Hinton and AI research pioneer Yoshua Bengio have championed the RAISE Act. Should it become law, the bill would establish America's first set of legally mandated transparency standards for frontier AI labs. The RAISE Act has many of the same provisions and goals as California's controversial AI safety bill, SB 1047, which was ultimately vetoed. However, the co-sponsor of the bill, New York state Senator Andrew Gounardes told TechCrunch in an interview that he deliberately designed the RAISE Act such that it doesn't chill innovation among startups or academic researchers — a common criticism of SB 1047. 'The window to put in place guardrails is rapidly shrinking given how fast this technology is evolving,' said Senator Gounardes. 'The people that know [AI] the best say that these risks are incredibly likely […] That's alarming.' The Raise Act is now headed for New York Governor Kathy Hochul's desk, where could either sign the bill into law, send it back for amendments, or veto it altogether. If signed into law, New York's AI safety bill would require the world's largest AI labs to publish thorough safety and security reports on their frontier AI models. The bill also requires AI labs to report safety incidents, such as concerning AI model behavior or bad actors stealing an AI model, should they happen. If tech companies fail to live up to these standards, the RAISE Act empowers New York's Attorney General to bring civil penalties of up to $30 million. The RAISE Act aims to narrowly regulate the world's largest companies — whether they're based in California (like OpenAI and Google) or China (like DeepSeek and Alibaba). The bill's transparency requirements apply to companies whose AI models were trained using more than $100 million in computing resources, and are being made available to New York residents. Bores called the industry resistance unsurprising, but claimed that the RAISE Act would not limit innovation of tech companies in any way. Anthropic, the safety-focused AI lab that called for federal transparency standards for AI companies earlier this month, has not reached an official stance on the bill, co-founder Jack Clark said in a Friday post on X. However, Clark expressed some grievances over how broad the RAISE Act is, noting that it could present a risk to 'smaller companies.' When asked about Anthropic's criticism, state Senator Gounardes told TechCrunch he thought it 'misses the mark,' noting that he designed the bill not to apply to small companies. OpenAI, Google, and Meta did not respond to TechCrunch's request for comment. Another common criticism of the RAISE Act is that AI model developers simply wouldn't offer their most advanced AI models in the state of New York. That was a similar criticism brought against SB 1047, and it's largely what's played out in Europe thanks to the continent's tough regulations on technology. Assemblymember Bores told TechCrunch that the regulatory burden of the RAISE Act is relatively light, and therefore, shouldn't require tech companies to stop operating their products in New York. Given the fact that New York has the third largest GDP in the U.S., pulling out of the state is not something most companies would take lightly. 'I don't want to underestimate the political pettiness that might happen, but I am very confident that there is no economic reasons for them to not make their models available in New York,' said Assemblymember Borres.

Sage grouse study may benefit ranchers as Trump seeks to ramp up grazing
A 10-year study led by federal and academic researchers appears to dispel the long-held notion that cattle grazing and the resulting lower grass height negatively affect the success of greater sage grouse nests. The study, which included researchers at the U.S. Geological Survey, University of Idaho and Forest Service, analyzed more than 1,200 sage grouse nesting sites in Idaho. It found that while grazing does reduce grass height that helps conceal grouse chicks from predators, the success rate of nests 'is no greater in pastures that were rested for 4-8 years than those currently or recently grazed.' Thus, the study found 'no indication that removing cattle from pastures affected nesting success.' Nor did it find 'compelling evidence' that the density of nesting hens increased in pastures where grazing was stopped. 'This study provides critical insights for land managers balancing livestock production with sage grouse conservation, supporting adaptive grazing strategies that maintain both economic and ecological objectives.'
