In retaliation, Iran has launched around 400 missiles and hundreds of drones, killing at least 24 people in Israel and wounding hundreds.

Punjab: Ludhiana West assembly bypoll sees 33% voter turnout till 1pm
A voter turnout of 33.42% was recorded till 1pm in the polling for the Ludhiana West Assembly byelection in Punjab on Thursday. Polling began under tight security at 7am and it will continue till 6pm. The counting of votes will be held on June 23. The Ludhiana West assembly seat fell vacant following the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January. There are 14 candidates in the fray and 1,75,469 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise. Of them, 85,371 are women and 10 belong to the third gender. AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora reached a polling station along with his family members to exercise his franchise in the morning. Before casting their votes, the Aroras paid obeisance at a gurdwara, a temple and the Dargah Pir in Phillaur. Speaking to reporters, Arora appealed to the people to come out in large numbers to vote. Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu, BJP nominee Jiwan Gupta and Shiromani Akali Dal's Parupkar Singh Ghuman also cast their votes. Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann took to social media to urge voters to cast their vote. 'My appeal to the voters of Ludhiana West is that you must exercise your right to vote. You must fulfil your duty for the development and progress of your area. Do not consider today a holiday, definitely go and cast your vote,' Mann posted on X in Punjabi. Ludhiana deputy commissioner-cum-district election officer Himanshu Jain also cast his vote in the bypoll. A total of 194 polling stations have been set up with live webcasting facility. Designated counters have been set up at the entrance of polling stations for voters to securely deposit their mobile devices. These counters were managed by trained volunteers using jute or cloth bag mobile holders. 'In a first-of-its-kind initiative, all polling stations in Ludhiana West have made arrangements for safe mobile phone deposit aims to enhance the voter experience while at the same time upholding the secrecy of voting,' the chief electoral officer, Punjab said in a post on X. Polling stations were equipped with poll volunteers, wheelchairs and help desk to assist voters, said officials. The voting process is being monitored in real-time from the integrated command and control centre at the district administrative complex. As many as 235 CCTV cameras have been installed at polling stations. The ruling AAP has fielded Rajya Sabha member Arora for the bypoll. Arora, 61, is a Ludhiana-based industrialist and is also known for his social work. He runs the Krishna Pran Breast Cancer Charitable Trust. The Congress has nominated former minister and Punjab Congress working president Ashu, 51. Ashu had been MLA twice from this seat in 2012 and 2017. He was defeated by Gogi by 7,512 votes in the 2022 assembly polls. The BJP candidate is a member of the core committee of Punjab BJP. Gupta was earlier the party's state general secretary. The Ludhiana West bypoll is seen as a litmus test for Mann and the ruling party's national leadership which aggressively campaigned to retain this seat.

Indian evacuees from Iran flag issues with J&K buses; CM Abdullah responds
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday announced that Indian students returning from Iran under 'Operation Sindhu' would be transported via deluxe buses, after several evacuees raised concerns about the condition of the buses arranged for their onward journey to Union territory. Speaking to news agency ANI, one student said, 'The buses that have been provided are in such bad condition that even animals will not travel in them. We can't go in such buses, and our safety could have been compromised. We are here (in Delhi) and for that we are thankful to the central government as they have evacuated us smoothly, we faced no problem till here, but we are having a problem here now...' Responding to the complaints, the Chief Minister's Office posted on X: 'The Chief Minister has taken note of the request of the students evacuated from Iran regarding the quality of buses arranged to transport them from Delhi to J&K.' . On Thursday morning, Iran and Israel exchanged fresh missile strikes as the conflict entered its seventh day. The group of 110 Indian nationals evacuated from Urmia, Iran, under 'Operation Sindhu' arrived in Delhi earlier on Thursday and expressed gratitude to the Indian government. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh welcomed the first group at the airport. One of the returning students said Indian authorities had 'done a good job' and ensured a smooth evacuation. He noted that conditions in Iran, particularly in Tehran, were deteriorating rapidly. . They reported no issues during the evacuation and said the embassy had made timely arrangements for their departure. To assist those still in Iran, the Indian Embassy established 24x7 control rooms and emergency helpline numbers. According to a Times of India report, around 10,000 Indian nationals or people of Indian origin are currently in Iran, including approximately 6,000 students.

The major index Tel Aviv Stock Exchange is up 4.26 per cent intraday on Thursday at 6,311. Since the escalation of the conflict, the index has jumped almost 14 per cent or 800 points. Index is now 52-week high. The ongoing Iran–Israel conflict has had a mixed but largely resilient impact on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE). Initially, indices like TA-125 and TA-35 experienced brief declines due to investor panic and geopolitical uncertainty. However, factors such as limited escalation being priced in, strong fundamentals, central bank preparedness, and upward momentum in certain sectors have helped maintain the stability of the exchange. Additionally, the strikes targeted a major hospital in southern Israel. Israel's Magen David Adom rescue service reported that at least 32 people were injured from these latest missile attacks. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Tehran would 'pay a heavy price" for the missile strike on the hospital in southern Israel. Israel's June 13 airstrikes on Iranian soil have sharply escalated the long-running confrontation between the two arch-rivals. Codenamed Operation Rising Lion, the operation involved dozens of Israeli fighter jets targeting Iran's nuclear infrastructure, missile factories, and top military personnel. Explosions were reported in Tehran and at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility. 'We are at a decisive moment in Israel's history," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a recorded video message. Meanwhile, Israel's Defence Minister, Israel Katz, announced a 'special situation' as some military officials there confirmed attacks on Iranian nuclear sites. According to Israel's Channel 12, Iran's Armed Forces Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri and several senior nuclear scientists may have been killed, though Iran has not officially confirmed the casualties. Iran has issued a stern warning against any potential US involvement in the ongoing conflict with Israel, declaring that 'all options are on the table" should Washington take direct action. The statement from Iran comes amid rising tensions and a deepening regional crisis, with Tehran cautioning that American intervention could escalate. The warning underscores Iran's readiness to respond forcefully if the US is perceived as playing an active role in military operations against it.
