Artificial intelligence and virtual care: Transforming healthcare delivery

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the power to improve patient outcomes while driving down costs, and emerging AI systems have already changed doctor-patient interaction by making virtual visits and remote care significantly more convenient. But adoption of every new technology requires adherence to regulation and a measured, thoughtful approach to ensure that it can deliver what it promises to deliver. At Intersect 2025, three leading minds in healthcare, information, and legal best practices sat down to discuss their individual personal views of the challenges of AI adoption and the regulatory landscape facing AI-enabled solutions.
Daniel Cody is a Health Care and Life Sciences Member at leading law firm Mintz, and he spoke about the pressing need for AI-driven solutions in medical care, saying that, 'Hospitals are stressed, especially with ongoing threats to Medicaid and other programs. So, the twin goals of improving outcomes and reducing costs are universal.'
Cody went on to list key ways that AI is already improving the experience of providers and patients. 'Remote monitoring devices are more advanced, with AI capabilities. It's not just about helping folks with diabetes and chronic disease track their conditions but being predictive and giving information to their PCPs on a 24/7 basis. AI tools are also fantastic for helping radiologists evaluate images so they can diagnose and start treatment earlier.'
The tools we now call AI have actually been in use for years, giving organizations a long runway to find the ideal approach. 'Five years ago, AI was called clinical decision support,' says Adnan E. Hamid, Regional Vice President and Chief Information Officer at CommonSpirit Health. 'As one of the larger Catholic healthcare systems in the nation, CommonSpirit makes sure that when we select technology, it's human centric and mission centric. The goal is to not replace but augment the human interaction between the clinician and patient.'
expand
To reach this goal, medical organizations must navigate an ever-evolving field of regulations. 'We have a systemwide UC AI Council and similar oversight committees, and a chief AI officer at each medical center. The UC AI Council sponsored the development of the UC Responsible AI Principles, and a publicly-available model risk assessment guide with procurement process questions built in. We offer an AI primer, and many of our education webinars are open to the public. Twenty UC policies connect to UC AI guidance, considering the many privacy and security requirements on the campus and health side,' says Noelle Vidal, Healthcare Compliance and Privacy Officer for the Office of the President of the University of California.
Regulations such as HIPAA are all-important when considering whether to use an AI tool, especially since the better-known apps add user data to their own algorithms. 'When ChatGPT was released, our providers were interested in the power of generative AI,' Hamid says. 'But if you enter patient information, it's no longer private but resides as part of the tool. To ensure nobody was accessing ChatGPT from our systems, we accelerated efforts to produce our own internal generative AI tool using Google Gemini on the back end. Data and security are our IT cornerstones.'
AI adds a new layer to assess. As Vidal says, "A thorough assessment can take awhile. Whenever we get a request, it goes through a multi-team scan for privacy, security, and other UC requirements, including the new AI assessment questions. An AI tool's use of data continues to evolve and change how impactful the tool will be. Every change in the technology could contradict what we negotiated earlier in a prior contract with the same vendor. We've got different teams to rank the risk of using a tool. I know it frustrates our stakeholders who want to get every innovation in quickly, but we try to balance adoption with risk prevention.'
Ultimately, only the AI applications with the most practical uses are going to clear the vetting and regulatory process to change how practitioners improve the patient experience and the efficacy of healthcare.
'The targeted tools that solve real problems are going to win,' Cody says. 'They're going to ensure security and privacy compliance.' As noted by Hamid, 'the fastest way to get technology approved is to have a really good use case. If you can provide the details of how the tool will solve a problem, then users will complete that process faster. Ultimately, AI adoption is influenced by the structure and mission of the organization.'

3 Hot Tech Stocks With More Potential Than Any Cryptocurrency

CoreWeave's AI cloud business is booming. D-Wave's practical applications for quantum computing are impressing investors. QuantumScape could reshape the EV market with its solid-state batteries. 10 stocks we like better than CoreWeave › Cryptocurrencies might be worthwhile plays for investors who have a high tolerance for risk. However, they're also notoriously volatile and difficult to value since they often trade on market hype or murky future expectations regrading their scarcity or utility. So instead of chasing the market's hottest cryptocurrencies right now, it might be smarter to invest in three speculative tech stocks: CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV), D-Wave Quantum (NYSE: QBTS), and QuantumScape (NYSE: QS). These stocks are also undeniably risky, but they're built on firmer businesses with clearer roadmaps for the future. CoreWeave, which was once an Ethereum mining operation, abandoned the crypto market in 2018 and leveraged its big inventory of graphics processing units (GPUs) to build an artificial intelligence (AI)-oriented cloud-infrastructure business. After spending about $100 million on Nvidia's H100 data center GPUs in 2022, it carved out a niche with a dedicated AI platform which was about 35 times faster and 80% cheaper than bigger cloud-infrastructure platforms. It used its own GPUs as collateral to secure more financing, and it attracted some investments from big investors like Nvidia, Cisco, and PureStorage. Its total number of data centers rose from just three in 2022 to 33 at the end of its latest quarter. Its revenue soared from $16 million in 2022 to $1.92 billion in 2024, and it expects that figure to more than double to about $5 billion in 2025. It isn't cheap at 15 times that sales estimate, and its stock has already more than quadrupled since its initial public offering (IPO) just two months ago. But it could have plenty of room to grow as the AI market expands. CoreWeave's lack of profits, high debt, and plans to accelerate its spending on Nvidia's latest Blackwell GPUs could compress its near-term valuations and cool off its stock, but it could head a lot higher over the next few years if it successfully scales up its business and narrows its losses. D-Wave Computing develops quantum annealing tools which can help companies optimize their schedules, workflows, and supply chains. Through quantum computing, which stores zeros and ones simultaneously in qubits, it operates more efficiently than traditional computers which store that data in separate binary bits. D-Wave's core Leap platform, which can be integrated into bigger public cloud platforms, is essentially a quantum-powered efficiency expert. It runs an organization's processes through its systems in various ways, and it identifies the one which consumes the least power as the most efficient. As a quantum-powered platform, D-Wave can map out all of those potential outcomes at a much faster rate than traditional computers. More than 100 companies -- including Deloitte, Mastercard, Lockheed Martin, and Accenture -- already use its services. That makes it a more practical play on the nascent quantum-computing market than its other niche research-oriented peers. From 2024 to 2027, analysts expect D-Wave's revenue to surge from $9 million to $74 million. It's not expected to turn profitable anytime soon, and it might seem absurdly overvalued at 70 times its projected sales for 2027. But it could grow a lot bigger as the quantum-computing market expands over the next few decades. QuantumScape is another speculative stock which could skyrocket over the long run. It develops solid-state lithium metal batteries which have better thermal resistance, faster charging times, and last longer than traditional lithium ion batteries. That makes them well suited for electric vehicles (EV), but it hasn't commercialized any of its batteries yet. QuantumScape is backed by Volkswagen, and its first QSE-5 batteries will have a fast charging time of less than 15 minutes with an EV range of up to 500 miles. Most EVs currently have a range of roughly 300 miles with an average charging time of 30 minutes. It's only shipped a few low-volume samples so far, and it doesn't expect to mass produce any batteries or generate any revenue until 2026. But this year, the company is transitioning from its older Raptor separator process to its newer Cobra process. That long-awaited upgrade should boost its stability and yields to pave the way toward the mass production of its batteries. QuantumScape is worth $2.4 billion right now, but it's tough to value because it's unprofitable, isn't generating any revenue yet, and still faces competition from other battery makers and automakers. But if it successfully scales up its business, it might just attract a stampede of bulls and outperform any of the market's top cryptocurrencies. 2 High-Growth Stocks to Buy and Hold for Great Long-Term Potential

CoreWeave is a promising stock to use to profit from the growing investment in AI infrastructure services. Axon stock recently hit new highs as it continues to report growing demand for its public safety solutions. 10 stocks we like better than CoreWeave › Investing in fast-growing companies that still have a large opportunity ahead for their products can help you build wealth. Artificial intelligence (AI) and public safety are promising industries to look for investments in 2025. Here are two stocks to ride these megatrends. AI is expected to add trillions in value to the economy over the long term, but this first requires substantial investment in data centers specially designed to handle AI computing workloads. CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV) is a leader in offering AI infrastructure through the cloud for training models and other advanced workloads at scale. CoreWeave's revenue has exploded over the last year, growing from $189 million in Q1 2024 to $982 million in Q1 2025. Management expects 2025 revenue to be between $4.9 billion to $5.1 billion. For a long-term investor, CoreWeave is a unique stock with which to ride the growth of AI. It earns revenue through multiyear contracts or on-demand services, but most of its revenue is through committed contracts. This business model instills steady revenue and growing cash flows over time. The business is in the process of investing in technology to meet growing demand for its services. It reported a loss of $314 million last quarter. This mostly reflects the high upfront investment it's making in infrastructure, such as Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs), to offer its AI cloud platform to customers. However, CoreWeave is already showing the potential to be a very profitable business down the road. In Q1, its adjusted operating income increased 17% year over year to $163 million. But until it achieves higher margins, investors should expect the stock to be volatile. This is a world-class AI infrastructure provider that is trading at a price-to-sales multiple of 13 based on management's 2025 guidance. This is based on the company's current market cap (share price times shares outstanding) of $64 billion. Investors buying around this valuation can still expect to earn excellent returns over the next several years. Axon Enterprise (NASDAQ: AXON) (formerly Taser International) started over 30 years ago selling its Taser energy devices for law enforcement and self-defense. In recent years, the company has transformed into a services company with software solutions. This has grown its addressable market to an estimated $129 billion. Axon offers cloud-based evidence gathering software and body cameras, which has transformed the business from a device seller to a comprehensive solutions provider for public safety. Revenue from software and services grew 39% year over year to $263 million last quarter. Taser devices remain a key growth driver for the company. Since launching a few years ago, Taser 10 orders are growing twice as fast as the adoption of Taser 7. This indicates an expanding market for its products, which is a great sign for investors buying shares today. Axon's total revenue grew 31% year over year last quarter to $604 million. Axon is also benefiting from strong demand for Draft One, a service that uses AI to automatically fill out data entries and police reports. It saves hours of time from manual work, which has made it the fastest-growing software offering in Axon's history. Taser is potentially vulnerable to risks that investors should be aware of. It generates some revenue from government contracts, making it susceptible to spending cuts and higher compliance costs that could pressure its profit margin. It could also face public backlash and resistance from privacy concerns over its body camera products. But Axon's history shows that the need for enhanced public safety tools continues to grow. The stock surged to new highs following its first-quarter earnings report, which can be taken as a bullish signal on the company's future.
