Kenyan agents bust plot to smuggle giant ants for sale to foreign insect lovers

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Four smugglers caught trying to transport thousands of live ants out of Kenya for sale on exotic pet markets in Europe and Asia will be sentenced for trafficking wildlife in a case being hailed as a milestone by the Kenya Wildlife Service.
The KWS said authorities had intercepted live queen ants, including from the sought-after Messor Cephalotes species also known as the Giant African Harvester Ant, concealed in modified test tubes and syringes.
"Investigations revealed that the test tubes had been designed to sustain the ants for up to two months and evade airport security detection," the KWS said in a statement, describing this as "premeditated and well-executed".
While some people may see ants as a picnic-ruining nuisance, aficionados enjoy keeping them in formicariums, transparent cases where they can watch them building complex colonies.
A court document seen by Reuters stated that the authorities had intercepted about 5,000 queens packed in 2,244 containers, with a street value of about 1 million Kenyan shillings ($7,800).
Two Belgians, one Vietnamese and one Kenyan pleaded guilty on Monday to charges of illegal possession and trafficking of live wildlife and appeared again on Tuesday at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Court.
"We did not come here to break any laws. By accident and stupidity we did," said David Lornoy, one of the Belgian smugglers, as he asked the court to show leniency.
The court adjourned the case until April 23, when it will consider pre-sentencing reports from the KWS, National Museums of Kenya and the probation officer. The smugglers are in custody.
One source in the ant trade, who asked not to be named because it is a small world and they did not wish to speak for others, said suppliers needed a licence from the KWS and a health certificate in order to export Messor Cephalotes.
The source said the species, native to Kenya, was much in demand and hard to obtain.
The KWS trumpeted the case as a landmark in the fight against biopiracy because it involved the attempted export of Kenya's genetic resources without prior informed consent or benefit-sharing, in direct violation of the law.
"This unprecedented case signals a shift in trafficking trends - from iconic large mammals to lesser-known yet ecologically critical species," it said in a statement.
The specialist British retailer AntsRUs described the species as "truly amazing to visually observe".
"Messor Cephalotes are many people's dream species. Queens are around 20-24mm long and have a beautiful red and brown/black coloration," it said.
AntsRUs lists the price of a live queen from the species as 99.99 pounds ($132.44), although they are currently out of stock.

Russia's new drone strikes hit Kyiv, maternity ward in Odesa, Ukraine says

Rescuers are working at the sites." Reuters' witnesses heard a series of loud explosions throughout the city. In the southern port of Odesa, a "massive" drone attack targeted an emergency medical building and a maternity ward, as well as residential buildings, Oleh Kiper, governor of the broader Odesa region said on Telegram. Regarding the maternity hospital there were no casualties and patients and staff were evacuated, Kiper said. He posted photos of broken windows in what looked like a medical facility and of damages to facades of several buildings. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia launched against Ukraine more than three years ago. But thousands of civilians have been killed in the conflict, the chief majority of them Ukrainian.

Cleanup of graffiti, damage begins in Los Angeles as anti-ICE protests continue
By Christian Martinez (Reuters) -Even as protests against raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement stretched into a fourth day Monday in Los Angeles, city workers began a cleanup of graffiti and other weekend damage across the city. Maintenance workers could be seen removing anti-ICE graffiti spray painted on City Hall as other workers covered up messages in the city's Arts District. Burned out shells of Waymo autonomous vehicles remained on the city street where they had been engulfed in flames a day earlier. Spray painted messages with expletives aimed at ICE and anti-police, and pro-migrant statements could be seen across downtown Los Angeles, including at the Roybal Federal Building where protesters continued to gather on Monday afternoon. The cleanup efforts come after protesters clashed with the Los Angeles Police Department, other law enforcement personnel and ICE agents amid ongoing immigration sweeps in Southern California. The protests reached a boiling point on Sunday as multiple vehicles, including a California Highway Patrol cruiser, were set on fire. Police fired tear gas into the crowds. Los Angeles television station KTLA reported several businesses in the downtown area, including a cell phone retailer and a clothing store, were looted and vandalized overnight and in the early morning hours. Los Angeles Public Library said it would close its branches in downtown, Chinatown and Little Tokyo due to the protests. "We're closing to ensure the safety of patrons and staff in DTLA," the library said on Monday in a post on X.

Public disorder breaks out in Northern Irish town, with missiles thrown at police
LONDON (Reuters) -Public disorder broke out in Ballymena town centre in Northern Ireland following a protest reportedly over an alleged sexual assault case on Monday, with police saying a number of missiles had been thrown towards officers. The unrest follows a protest in the area, about 45 km (30 miles) from the capital city of Belfast, earlier on Monday evening, the police statement said, adding damage was reported to a number of properties. Social media footage, purportedly showing the disorder, captured plumes of fire near what appeared to be residential buildings, with police present at the scene. Another clip appeared to show a masked man throwing an object at police vans as a crowd looked on. Reuters could not immediately verify the authenticity of these clips. "We are urging everyone to remain calm and to act responsibly," Chief Superintendent Sue Steen said in the police statement. BBC News reported that hundreds of protesters had gathered in Ballymena in response to a case involving two teenage boys who appeared before Coleraine Magistrates' Court earlier in the day, accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl in the County Antrim town. Irish media outlet RTE News reported that the teenagers, who it said are Romanian and spoke through an interpreter, cannot be identified because of their ages. A separate police statement from Sunday said two teenage boys had been charged with attempted rape in connection with a serious sexual assault on a teenage girl in Ballymena on Saturday evening.
