Trucks with explosives seized in Odisha; warehouse owner, driver held
ROURKELA: Two days after seizing a couple of mini-trucks laden with blasting explosives, RN Pali police arrested the explosives warehouse owner and his driver and produced them in court on Tuesday.
The arrest of Shraban Agarwal (41) and his driver Birsa Samad (30) comes after the two explosives-laden trucks were found parked outside a fuel station at Deogaon near Balughat on June 1.
Police said Agarwal has two explosive licences including one in the name of his wife and owns a warehouse at the remote Itma in Bargaon block of Sundargarh district. On May 27, three trucks carrying explosives had come out of the warehouse. One of the trucks was looted by Maoists from K Balang area. Agarwal kept the other two trucks hidden and lied to police that the explosives were delivered to clients.
Police said around 23,000 pieces of gelatin sticks, 400 detonators and 22,500 metres of detonating fuse wires were seized from one vehicle. Seizure from the other truck included 3,750 metre wires, 2,718 gelatin sticks and 30 packets of detonators.
One of the trucks was driven by Agarwal himself. He along with his driver parked the two trucks outside Rourkela Fuel Filling Station at Deogaon on May 30. Two days later, locals informed the police about the parked vehicles.
Rourkela SP Nitesh Wadhwani said the accused failed to produce any valid document for the explosives. Agarwal kept the trucks hidden with the intention to sell the explosives later at a higher cost. So far, Agarwal's link with Maoists has not come to notice.
On May 27 morning, Maoists had hijacked an explosives-laden truck from near a stone quarry at Banko within K Balang police limits. They took the vehicle to the nearby forest and unloaded the explosives. Later, the ultras carried the explosives to Saranda forest in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.
On May 30, the security forces of Odisha and Jharkhand recovered a portion of the looted explosives after an exchange of fire with the Maoists at Tirilposh inside Saranda forest. Subsequently on Monday, the forces recovered about 2.5 tonne of looted explosives from Saranda.

Raipur: In yet another big blow to the Left Wing Extremism (LWE), another senior Maoist rank cadre — Bhaskar, who carried Rs 45 lakh bounty — was neutralized on Friday in an encounter that broke out in the same area where Maoists central committee member Sudhakar alias Tentu Lakshmi Narasimha Chalam was gunned down on Thursday in the forests of Bijapur. Chhattisgarh: Naxal leader Bhaskar, carrying cumulative bounty of ₹45 lakh, killed in Bijapur encounter
Amid the ongoing anti-Naxal operation in the Indravati National Park area of Bijapur district, the security forces on Friday killed top Naxalite leader Bhaskar, who carried a cumulative bounty of ₹ 45 lakh, reported PTI. According to the report, which quoted Inspector General of Police, Bastar Range Sundarraj, the security forces have recovered the dead body of Naxal Bhaskar, alias Mailarapu Adellu. Along with his body, the security forces have also recovered one AK-47 rifle and other explosives, weapons, and ammunition. The encounter of Bhaskar was part of the same anti-Naxal operation underway since Wednesday by personnel from the state police's Special Task Force (STF) and District Reserve Guard (DRG) as well as the CRPF's specialised unit CoBRA. "After the exchange of fire stopped, the body of a Naxalite along with one AK-47 rifle and other explosives, weapons, and ammunition were recovered from the encounter site. Preliminary identification suggests the body is of Bhaskar alias Mailarapu Adellu, a special zonal committee (SZC) member of the Telangana State Committee (TSC) of the outlawed Maoists," PTI quoted the IG as saying. "Bhaskar, a resident of Adilabad district in Telangana, was the secretary of the Mancherial-Komarambheem (MKB) division of the TSC of Maoists. He carried a reward of ₹ 25 lakhs in Chhattisgarh and 20 lakhs in Telangana," the IG added. Arrested explosives godown owner quizzed for 2nd day
Rourkela: Interrogation of the owner of an explosives godown, Shravan Agrawal, who was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly violating standard operating procedures, continued for the second day at Raghunathpalli police station here on Friday. Agrawal and his driver, Birsa Samad alias Ishak, were arrested for allegedly violating SOPs related to explosives materials. The arrests followed after Maoists looted 5,000 kg of explosives from Banko stone quarry in Sundargarh district on May 27. The police crackdown intensified after explosives were discovered in a truck near a petrol pump on June 1, followed by the seizure of another truck with illegal explosives on June 3. Both the accused have been charged under various sections of BNS and Explosives Substance Act. Investigation revealed Agrawal owns four warehouses in Bargaon, Sundargarh, with two registered in his wife Nikita's name. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is also probing the Maoist explosives loot. The SIT, led by additional SP H K Majhi, has sealed all four warehouses after stock verification. Agrawal was brought on a two-day remand to verify tax documents from explosives unit in Maharashtra and Telangana. Sales tax authorities also examined the papers on Friday. Nikita will also be questioned. "Our investigation is progressing," said Majhi. Deputy director of mines (Rourkela), Bimbadhar Sethi, has been asked to submit documents regarding permissions granted to the stone quarry for blasting. Around 3.8 tonnes of the looted explosives have been recovered, with joint search operations ongoing to trace the remaining cosnignment.
