In a separate post, Foreign Policy Canada, an arm of Global Affairs Canada, said Anand had also liaised with counterparts in Europe, Jordan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Oman on Middle East peace talks over the weekend.

National Post has contacted both Global Affairs and the Canadian Embassy in Tel Aviv for more information on the staffer and her rescue.

The incident comes as long-simmering tensions between the rival Middle East nations have boiled over into spiralling violence following Israel's Operation Rising Lion — a series of surprise airstrikes on more than 100 strategic targets, including Iranian uranium enrichment sites, to keep Iran from building nuclear weapons. The attacks resulted in the deaths of high-ranking military leaders and scientists.

Donald Trump to leave G7 Summit early over Middle East tensions

U.S. President Donald Trump will leave the G7 Summit in Alberta early, with the rising tensions in the Middle East cited as the reason. Article content In a post to X late on Monday afternoon, Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said that Trump 'had a great day at the G7,' and 'much was accomplished.' Article content 'But because of what's going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State,' Leavitt wrote. Article content Article content President Trump had a great day at the G7, even signing a major trade deal with the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Article content Article content Trump called for the evacuation of Iran's capital Tehran on Monday, hours after he urged the country's leadership to sign a deal to limit its nuclear program and Israel signalled strikes would continue. Article content It wasn't clear if Trump knew of a fresh round of attacks Israel may have planned for the city, which has a population of more than 9 million people. Israel had earlier warned one Tehran neighbourhood to evacuate and video showed massive traffic jams as people sought to escape. Soon after Trump's post, Iran's Fars news agency reported several explosions east of the city. Article content 'Iran should have signed the 'deal' I told them to sign,' Trump wrote in a social media post from a Group of Seven leaders' summit in Alberta, Canada. Trump leaving G7 summit early to deal with Middle East crisis, White House says

U.S. President Donald Trump is leaving the G7 summit in Alberta early because he's needed back in Washington to address what's going on in the Middle East, Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said in a social media post late Monday. That's an apparent reference to the war between Iran and Israel, which is expanding by the day as Israel ramps up its attacks as part of a push to destroy the country's nuclear program and wipe out the senior Iranian officials who lead it. Leavitt said Trump "had a great day at the G7" — he signed a trade pact with the United Kingdom and agreed to try and reach one with Canada within 30 days — but he has to go after the leaders' dinner this evening. Trump's departure means he will miss the second day of the G7 program, including the visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump was set to meet with Zelenskyy and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum for bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit.

Varcoe: 'Important thread of hope': Trump stands by tariffs but Canada seeks trade deal within 30 days

Article content 'I'm a tariff person.' Article content Article content Well, that didn't take long. Article content Mere hours into the opening day of the G7 summit on Monday, the U.S. president emerged from a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney and opined on an array of topics: tariffs, the Israel-Iran conflict and who was to blame for kicking Russia out of the powerful international group a decade ago. Article content Article content Yet, on the issue squarely in front of Carney — getting the U.S. president to lift tariffs on steel, aluminum and some of the auto sector — the news was decidedly mixed, although Canadian business groups saw some glimmers of hope. Article content Article content Trump reiterated his belief in the wonders of putting tariffs on foreign goods entering the United States, but also indicated that reaching a deal within days or weeks between the two countries 'is achievable.' Article content Late Monday afternoon, the prime minister's office issued a statement, noting that the two leaders 'agreed to pursue negotiations toward a deal within the coming 30 days.' Article content Article content After the sit-down with Carney in Kananaskis, Trump told reporters he's 'sure we can work something out.' Article content Article content Key details of a potential deal remain murky. Article content 'We have different concepts. I have a tariff concept. Mark has a different concept, which is something that some people like, but we're going to see if we can get to the bottom of it today,' the U.S. president said. Article content 'I'm a tariff person. I've always been a tariff person. It's simple, it's easy, it's precise and it just goes very quickly. And I think Mark has a more complex idea, but also very good.
