Tourists slam world's most overcrowded city which is 'wall to wall people'

Daily Mirrora day ago

Phuket in Thailand has been named as the world's most overcrowded travel hotspot, with 118 tourists for every single local resident, and one traveller said you'd be faced with 'wall to wall people'
Tourists are growing tired of a holiday hotspot that has become too popular for its own good.
The issue of over-tourism has become a pressing concern in the travel industry, especially after the post- Covid resurgence led to an exceptionally bustling summer as holidaymakers, previously confined by lockdowns, finally embarked on their long-awaited journeys. Last year Venice launched a day-trip tourist tax aimed at reducing the influx of visitors to the City of Water.

It's far from being the first popular destination to implement such a measure, with numerous other cities and countries already striving to curb tourist numbers. In the UK, Brighton is considering whether to introduce such a measure, in a bid to swell the council's coffers while controlling the impact of tourism.

Thailand is one place that has recently introduced a similar levy, and for good reason. Phuket, an island in the country, has been deemed the world's most overcrowded destination. A study from MoneyTransfers.com found that that this Thai gem has a staggering 118 tourists for every local inhabitant.

Phuket boasts some of the world's top coastal spots, including Kata and Karon. As Thailand's largest island, it offers around 90 miles of coastline. However, experiences on the island can vary greatly. Patong, one of Phuket's most renowned resorts, is famed for its vibrant nightlife, rows of beach deckchairs, and hordes of tourists.
In contrast, the north and east sides of the island offer tranquil seaside spots and more authentic, affordable Thai cuisine. A disgruntled traveller took to Tripadvisor to share their disillusionment with Phuket, recounting their experiences from the 70s to a visit seven years ago. "I made my first trip to Phuket in the mid 70's and have returned many times since, the latest around seven years ago," they began.
"Needless to say there have been huge changes over the years and I expected to see a lot more people there during our visit. However, nothing could have prepared me for the hordes of people crowding the island, the beaches and the day tours to outlying islands."

They expressed dismay at the influx of new visitors: "A crush of new tourists are arriving and often on non-stop, wide bodied flights. This is on top of an already large number of tourists visiting from other countries and from within Thailand itself, and my perception is that the sheer number of bodies is overwhelming the place. Fortunately we had a nice resort away from the crowds so the visit was not a total loss. If you love wall to wall people, go to Phuket, but if not, I suggest you look for some less crowded places in the region."
As Thailand grapples with a tumultuous travel industry that saw visitor numbers plummet from 40 million in 2019 to a mere 200,000 in 2020, only to surge dramatically as borders reopened, the country implemented a tourist tax in April last year. Now, all airfares into the country include an additional £6.60 charge.
If you fancy experiencing Thailand when it's less crowded, it would be prudent to avoid the peak season between November and March. Although temperatures might be slightly cooler, they'll still hover around the 30C mark in many areas.

"I just feel like everyone tries to do something different, but you always wind up doing the same damn thing," exclaims Leonardo DiCaprio's character in Danny Boyle's The Beach. His words are prophetic in both the film and real life.
The success of the movie would sound a death knell for the pristine, idyllic beach that gives the flick its name. More and more people travelled to Maya Bay where it was shot, to bask in its impossibly blue waters and sunbathe on the golden sands.

Today, the reality of the Thai destination could not be further from the slice of paradise at the heart of the film. Boats are banned from motoring into the bay as their presence was cluttering up the waters and chasing away the 40 blacktip reef sharks who usually cruise there out of the cyan shallows.
Tourists must buy a 400baht (£8) ticket to step onto the beach, only to be shepherded out again after an hour. Swimming is banned to protect the fragile reef system there. Officials decided to shut the bay - on Phi Phi Leh island in the Andaman Sea - first for four months and then several years from 2018, it finally opening up again in 2022.
One recent visitor to Maya Bay likened it to "Times Square in New York", such is the hustle, bustle and density of the crowds found there. If you're planning to visit Thailand, check out our guide on the quieter, less overcrowded beaches you can visit instead.

Harrowing moment tourist is mauled while trying to take selfie with tiger

A tourist who was attempting to pose for a photo with a tiger in Thailand was attacked by the animal and suffered minor injuries - footage of the incident has gone viral This is the harrowing moment a tourist is mauled by a tiger while trying to take a selfie with the animal. Footage circulating online shows the holidaymaker, believed to be from India, walking alongside the tiger while holding its chain at Tiger Kingdom in Phuket, Thailand. He can then be seen crouching beside the animal to pose for a photo. ‌ But as the trainer uses a stick to instruct the big cat to sit down and the tourist puts his arm around the tiger's back, the animal suddenly attacks the man, who is heard screaming. Shocked onlookers panic as the incident unfolds and the video ends abruptly as staff intervene to save the man. ‌ According to reports, the tourist suffered minor injuries in the attack. The incident has raised serious concerns about wildlife safety and tourism ethics in places like Tiger Kingdom Phuket, which is described on Tripadvisor as "a once in a lifetime experience where you can meet, play, and have your photo taken with tigers." Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand, a rescue centre for elephants, monkeys and jungle cats, called for an end on big cat exploitation, saying: "This cruelty must end. For their safety - and ours." A person wrote on X, "Cats generally do not like being petted on the lower (back) body especially near butts. This man was petting the tiger continuously near above mentioned body area which must have frustrated the tiger. Final straw was when the man cupped it for a photo." ‌ Another said, "Been there. It's Tiger Kingdom in Phuket. They sedate the tigers just enough that they don't have the will to attack. Always feared this could happen." Someone else added: "Hopefully this forces the authorities to crack down on these places. It's plain cruelty." One more said: "What is meant to be wild should stay in the wild." Animal welfare organisations advise against visiting places such as tiger entertainment venues, which are common in South-East Asia, particularly Thailand, due to concerns about conservation and animal cruelty. The Environmental Investigation Agency said in a post on its website: "The simplest advice we can give you is if an establishment offers direct tourist interactions with captive animals (selfies, hugging, feeding) and/or promotes tigers engaging in unnatural behaviours (e.g. tricks or performances) then do not visit. ‌ "By not spending your money in tiger entertainment venues you will reduce the profitability of the tiger entertainment industry and help end these cruel practices for good." It also said cubs are often separated from their mothers within weeks of being born so that they can be hand-raised and bottle-fed by tourist. It added: "This is extremely stressful for both cubs and mothers, particularly if you consider that, in the wild, they would stay together for a couple of years. Furthermore, tigers are often confined to small, barren enclosures or cages resulting in significant physical and psychological distress, especially considering that tigers in the wild can roam many kilometres in a single night! Frequent handling and visitor contact in loud environments causes the animals further stress and, in order to perform for tourists, tigers are subjected to cruel training regimes." In December 2024, a zookeeper who had worked with tigers for years was mauled to death when he stepped inside the big cat enclosure at the Pitești Zoo. And in September 2024, a tiger mauled an animal handler at Dreamworld, in Queensland's Gold Coast, with the victim suffering "some serious lacerations and puncture wounds".

Inside Man Utd's post-season tour - Fuming stars, farcical scenes, stag do claim

Manchester United flew out to Malaysia and Hong Kong for a post-season tour immediately after their disastrous 2024-25 season ended, and some players were reportedly angered at having to take part Manchester United stars have been left "dismayed" after being forced to travel for the club's post-season tour in Asia, with some forced to cancel personal holidays. The Red Devils jetted off for a 150-mile round trip to Malaysia and Hong Kong immediately after their last game of the Premier League season against Aston Villa last week. United had only just concluded a calamitous season that saw them finish 15th after 18 losses, while they also lost the Europa League final to rivals Tottenham that saw them miss out on the chance to secure Champions League football. ‌ When they discovered the club's plans to embark on a post-season tour so soon after a disastrous campaign, a small group of players approached the hierarchy to express their dissatisfaction, according to Manchester Evening News, with suggestions that some would refuse to join. ‌ United ended up bringing forward the flight to Malaysia after their 2-0 win over Villa on Sunday to 'reduce the possibility of last-minute withdrawals', with even injured stars Luke Shaw, Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee boarding the plane. The report adds that some members of the squad were "fuming" that the club organised the tour after a gruelling and difficult 60-game season. There were claims by some players that the tour would be like a 'stag do', with some staff enjoying drinks on the 14-hour flight. On the first night there, players were allowed to head into the city of Kuala Lumpur - but sources say "nothing crazy happened", with players returning at a "reasonable time". ‌ The tour began in miserable fashion, however, as United lost 1-0 to Asean All-Stars, a team that had played one game previously - a 1-0 defeat to the Indonesia national team. Afterwards, there was "humour" on the team bus, despite being booed by fans. United did win their second game 3-1 against Hong Kong, which earned them a friendly trophy - one so insignificant it was carried to the dressing room by their press officer. ‌ There had also been farcical scenes that were widely mocked on social media after United's open-top bus ride around Kuala Lumpur, with Zirkzee, De Ligt and Ayden Heaven taking part. Fans have teased United for the move despite their dismal season, but United officials have insisted it was billed as a bus tour - and one that was lapped up by locals. The trip has not been disciplined as a pre-season tour and players were allowed to be more "frivolous". Alejandro Garnacho - whose future remains uncertain - headed out with Heaven on e-scooters. ‌ Meanwhile, Zirkzee was unimpressed by room service at the team's hotel so he headed out for a Thai takeaway, flanked by a security guard. Three players who headed out to Malaysia - Harry Maguire, Andre Onana and Diogo Dalot - were picked to travel to Mumabi, India for more commercial activities. However, they were happy to do so as it meant they were able to return to the UK sooner. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Inside Man Utd's ‘stag do' Far East tour including clashes with fans, player protests and humiliating open-top bus trip

MANCHESTER UNITED endured a nightmare post-season tour in Asia including an embarrassing on-pitch display, a humiliating bus parade and unhappy players. Following the club's horror season, the decision to play two matches in the Far East to generate some extra cash was not a decision popular in the club. 9 Man Utd ended their post-season tour of Asia by lifting the Defining Education Challenge Cup Credit: Getty 9 The tour was a relaxed but sombre mood Credit: Reuters 9 The club's commercial activities saw them participating in a humiliating bus parade In fact, according to the Manchester Evening News, when the squad learned of that decision a delegation was sent to the club's football leadership on behalf of the first team to express their dismay. Some of the squad were said to be outright "fuming" about having to go on the six-day tour after a 60-game season, though with commercial duties taking up much of the agenda the trip effectively became a four-day event. Players were said to be concerned about having to cancel holiday plans, including one who complained about being forced to cancel a family trip scheduled for the half-term week. Club chiefs made a concession by bringing the departure time of their Malaysia flight forwards to Sunday evening, hour following the final game of the season against Aston Villa, after learning some players might try to "cry off" the 14,150-mile round trip to Malaysia. However, the actual mood in the camp on tour was said to be a better than anticipated despite the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. Some commercial player events including fan meet-and-greets are said to have taken up to two hours to complete as the local supporters lapped up the chance to see Man Utd in the flesh, including on the humiliating open-top bus parade which happened in Kuala Lumpur before the first friendly against ASEAN All-Stars. Kit makers Adidas hosted a nocturnal poolside party at the W Hotel - where they stayed as part of their link with club sponsor, Marriott - following the 1-0 defeat to the All-Stars. Several guests are said to have attended the meeting, with many "admiring" the view of the Petronas Twin Towers in the background. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK That came after players were said to have been using gallows humour on the team bus back to the hotel, which had followed some booing from fans there. The rules on tour were more relaxed than a pre-season tour would be and players were given permission to head out on their first night in the city, with one star allegedly half-joking the trip would be "like a stag do". Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho show middle finger to fans during Man Utd's post-season tour in Malaysia However, while some were tempted to go out into the city to enjoy the night, a senior star instead advised them to stay in. Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho and Ayden Heaven were seen out on e-scooters, which had to be paid for by fans, while Joshua Zirkzee opted to enjoy some Thai take-out with a security guard after not being impressed by the room service options. Club staff were also able to let their hair down in the trip, with some enjoying drinks on the 14-hour flight to the Malaysian capital. On the eighth floor of the hotel itself there was a vending machine which dispensed £40 mini bottles of Moet & Chandon champagne. The second leg of the tour saw them go to Hong Kong, but they were barely in the country 36 hours following an early-morning flight which then saw them spend an hour in their second W Hotel for lunch before getting on the team bus for training. 9 The squad stayed at the W Hotel in Kuala Lumpur as part of the club's partnership with Marriott Credit: Instagram / wkualalumpur 9 The five-star establishment had a vending machine dispensing £40 bottles of champagne Credit: 9 Although Joshua Zirkzee is said to have not been too impressed with the room service options Credit: Instagram / wkualalumpur 9 Adidas arranged for a poolside party event Credit: Despite the glitz and glam of the 5-star establishment, things were sour away from the hotel with Amad and Garnacho seen gesturing their middle fingers towards fans and the latter doing so towards a club camerman. Amad later revealed he had been subjected to insults about his mother from some fans. Meanwhile, Garnacho - on the tour after being told to "pray" he finds a new club following a public dressing down in front of team-mates by Ruben Amorim - did the gesture without any clear provocation. The 20-year-old was involved in a fan altercation while out in the city as the fan seemed to invade his personal space and also looked very unbothered during a shirt signing event. He was described as "surly" during the trip, with club staff shadowing him closely as he signed shirts and posed for pictures without ever breaking into a smile. 9 Alejandro Garnacho was in a 'surly' mood on the trip Credit: X 9 Amad Diallo was abused by fans who insulted his mother Credit: TikTok/@ahmdhakimi The Argentine was one of the last to board to team bus after the All Stars defeat and donned sunglasses as he ignored requests in the mixed zone. One eyewitness claimed he removed his shades after getting through the packed pen, while Amorim later chuckled in a press conference when a reporter asked if there was any chance of Garnacho staying at the club. Amorim, 40, is said to have told a colleague about how exhausting the post-season tour had been, especially in the humidity of Malaysia. Man Utd finished their tour by beating Hong Kong 3-1 off a brace from Chido Obi and a late header from Ayden Heaven. The club lifted the Defining Education Challenge Cup as a result of the win, but the trophy was so undervalued that a press officer carried it back to the dressing room. In the first game back in Kuala Lumpur, Man Utd stars had been delayed in collecting their silver medals when the referee and linesman had returned to the dressing room before being called back out. All in all the tour was estimated to generate around £10million for the club - which should at least leave the club's financial department a little happier- although you would imagine a post-season tour next year may not be on the cards. After the break a pre-season tour in Chicago is next, which is when the real work begins. Join SUN CLUB for the Man Utd Files every Thursday plus in-depth coverage and exclusives from Old Trafford
