Airbus strikes deal for up to 150 planes with VietJet
PARIS: Airbus struck a deal on Tuesday to sell up to 150 single-aisle aircraft to Vietnamese budget airline VietJet, as the European planemaker continues to rack up business at the Paris Airshow.
The companies said they had signed a memorandum of understanding for VietJet to buy 100 more A321neo planes, with the option to add up to a further 50 to the deal in future. The agreement confirmed an earlier Reuters story.
A deal for 150 A321neos could be worth around $9.4 billion, according to estimated prices provided by Cirium Ascend.
'These modern and efficient aircraft have been instrumental in VietJet's growth,' VietJet Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao said in a statement released at a press conference attended by a delegation including several Western bankers.
'This landmark agreement represents a vital step in VietJet's growth strategy as a multi-national aviation group.'
Riyadh Air orders 25 Airbus A350-1000 jets
The planes will be delivered from 2030 onwards, and VietJet said it had financing in place for the deal.
European planemaker Airbus has announced a flurry of deals at the Paris Airshow, the world's biggest aviation trade fair that opened on Monday.
U.S. rival Boeing is expected to have a more subdued show as it focuses on the probe into last week's fatal crash of an Air India Boeing 787 and after it racked up huge deals during U.S. President Donald Trump's recent tour of the Middle East.
VietJet, the largest private airline in Vietnam, operates an all-Airbus fleet, apart from two Chinese-made regional jets.
The airline has not to date taken delivery of any of the around 200 MAX planes it has ordered from Boeing.
Airbus is the main supplier of jets to Vietnam, accounting for 86% of the planes currently operated by Vietnamese airlines. However, the export-dependent Southeast Asian country is under pressure from Washington to buy more U.S. goods.
VietJet's latest deal comes only weeks after it ordered 20 A330neo wide-body airliners from Airbus.

Selling pressure at bourse, KSE-100 sheds over 1,000 points
Bearish sentiments prevailed at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), with the benchmark KSE-100 Index losing over 1,000 points during the intra-day trading on Wednesday. At 12pm, the benchmark index was hovering at 120,952.18, a decrease of 1,018.86 points or 0.84%. Selling pressure was observed in key sectors including automobile assemblers, cement, commercial banks, oil and gas exploration companies, OMCs, power generation and refinery. Index-heavy stocks including HUBCO, PSO, MARI, OGDC, POL, PPL, MCB, MEBL and NBP traded in the red. The PSX experienced a bearish close on Tuesday, as key benchmark indices retreated following a session primarily marked by declining scrips. The benchmark KSE-100 Index shed 254.32 points, representing a 0.21 percent dip, to settle at 121,971.04 points. Internationally, concerns over escalating hostilities in the Middle East stayed front and centre in markets on Wednesday, sending oil prices higher and investors rushing for the safety of US Treasuries and the dollar while dumping stocks. Investors have grown increasingly nervous over the possibility of a more direct US military involvement as the Israel-Iran air war entered a sixth day, with President Donald Trump calling for Iran's unconditional surrender and warning US patience was wearing thin. Oil prices extended their climb on Wednesday, with Brent crude futures up 0.33% to $76.70 per barrel while US crude rose 0.45% to $75.18 a barrel. Both had jumped more than 4% in the previous session. The broad risk-off moves across markets also continued to gather pace. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 0.26%, as did EUROSTOXX 50 futures, which declined 0.4%. US stock futures were little changed after the cash session on Wall Street ended in the red overnight. In currencies, the dollar firmed at a one-week high of 145.445 yen and held most of its gains against other peers. The euro struggled to recover from its 0.7% fall on Tuesday, and last bought $1.1487. This is an intra-day update

Gold flat as investors stay on sidelines ahead of Fed decision
Gold prices were flat in Asia trade on Wednesday as investors held back from placing large bets ahead of the US Federal Reserve's policy decision, while also keeping a close watch on the developments surrounding the Israel-Iran conflict. Spot gold was flat at $3,388.04 an ounce, as of 0341 GMT. US gold futures were mostly unchanged at $3,406.50. 'Gold fluctuated as investors tracked the escalation of risk in the Middle East. Tepid US reports on retail sales, housing and industrial output bolstered the case for the Fed to cut rates later this year,' analysts at ANZ said in a note. Iran and Israel launched new missile strikes at each other on Wednesday as the air war between the two longtime enemies entered a sixth day despite a call from US President Donald Trump for Iran's unconditional surrender. The US is deploying more fighter aircraft to the Middle East and extending the deployment of other warplanes, three US officials told Reuters. Data on Tuesday showed US retail sales dropped more than expected in May, weighed down by a decline in motor vehicle purchases as a rush to beat potential tariff-related price hikes ebbed. Meanwhile, the US central bank is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged at the end of its policy meeting later in the day. Focus will also be on Fed's updated projections for the economy and the benchmark interest rate. Gold prices lose further ground 'We maintain our forecast that structurally strong central bank buying and the boost to ETF holdings from Fed cuts will raise the gold price to $3,700/oz by end-2025 and $4,000 by mid-2026,' Goldman Sachs said in a note. SPDR Gold Trust, the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, said its holdings rose 0.43% to 945.94 tonnes on Tuesday. Elsewhere, spot silver eased 0.1% to $37.22 per ounce, platinum rose 0.3% to $1,266.04, while palladium gained 0.3% to $1,054.63.
