Why were the Cairngorms feral pigs killed?

BBC News13-02-2025

A group of feral pigs released illegally in the Cairngorms National Park have been caught and shot dead. However the culling of the pigs has caused outcry, with hundreds of people leaving comments on the BBC News website's Facebook page, expressing anger and accusing the authorities of animal cruelty. Some people have questioned why the pigs were treated differently to four lynx that were recently found about five miles from where the pigs were discovered. They were caught and taken to a zoo.Others have pointed to areas where feral pigs appear to roam freely. So why were the Cairngorms pigs killed?
What is the history of feral pigs in Scotland?
Wild boar were once native to Scotland but were hunted to extinction 700 years ago.Captive animals have been imported from continental Europe and kept under licence in zoos, private collections and on farms. Farmers often crossed wild boar with domesticated pigs to increase their litter size.
There have been numerous escapes from captivity, or deliberate releases, resulting in at least two breeding populations of feral pigs in Scotland. It is believed they are a mixture of wild boar, domesticated pigs and hybrids.
What is the legal status of feral pigs?
They are classed as a non-native species and because they can cause damage to the environment they are considered to be invasive. It is an offence under Section 14 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to release any type of pig, including wild boar. It is also an offence to allow them to escape from captivity.Releasing any new species, such as wild boar, requires a licence from Scotland's nature agency NatureScot and it has not issued any such licence. Wild boar and their hybrids are considered to be dangerous wild animals and they can only be kept under licence under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976.
Why are feral pigs considered to be a problem?
Their rooting behaviour can cause soil erosion, damage plant life, and disturb invertebrates and small mammals. In fragile ecosystems, this can be particularly harmful.Feral pigs may prey on the eggs of rare ground-nesting birds, negatively impacting biodiversity. They can cause significant destruction to agricultural fields and private property.
Feral pigs can also carry diseases such as African swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease and classical swine fever, which pose risks to livestock and even humans. The cost of managing feral pig populations, controlling their spread, and mitigating their damage could range from £100,000 to more than £1m in cases of disease outbreaks.Pigs wandering onto roads can lead to vehicle collisions.
Can feral pigs provide any benefits?
Their rooting can alter soil composition, affecting mineralisation and plant growth. That can sometimes lead to increased biodiversity by creating habitat mosaics - where different habitats are found closely together. They contribute to the cycling of nutrients by breaking down organic matter in the soil. Some populations are maintained for hunting purposes and meat production, which can have economic and recreational benefits.
Who is responsible for feral pigs in Scotland?
Individual land managers are primarily responsible for controlling feral pig populations, and should work in partnership with local communities.Where feral pigs are present, land managers are encouraged to control their numbers to manage their impacts on agriculture and the environment. They are not protected species and they can be shot. NatureScot has issued best practice advice on controlling the pigs. Over the last 10 years, populations of free-roaming pigs have become established in Dumfries and Galloway and the Highlands.
What happened in this case?
The feral pigs were seen near Uath Lochans, an area of woodland and small lochs near Kingussie, south of Aviemore, on Monday. The Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) said earlier this week they were "relatively domesticated" and appeared to have been illegally abandoned.
The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) said they would have been under great stress after being abandoned in a new and "extremely harsh" environment.Although nine pigs were seen, only eight were caught and killed. It is not known what happened to the ninth pig.Forestry and Land Scotland said the pigs were taken to an area where they were humanely culled, following expert advice from vets and Police Scotland. It was later established they had been shot.
What happened with the illegally-released lynx?
Four lynx that were illegally released in the Cairngorms were captured in early January and taken to Edinburgh Zoo - but one soon died. The three surviving lynx, all young females, have now been through 30 days quarantine and are said to be doing well. The zoo is now looking for new homes for them.It is still not known where the lynx came from.A licence is required under the Dangerous Animals Act to keep lynx.
Highland Council said no premises in the area had applied for, or were operating under a Dangerous Wild Animal (DWA) licence, suggesting the lynx had come from somewhere else.NatureScot also said it has not granted any licences for the reintroduction of lynx.Campaigners have been working on plans for the controlled reintroduction of the cats to benefit rural biodiversity but farmers have raised concerns about the impact they would have on livestock.Last week, First Minister John Swinney ruled out the legal release of lynx into the wild in Scotland, saying the reintroduction of lynx, or any other carnivorous species, would not take place under his government.

The Department of Homeland Security has revealed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) personnel will provide security at the game. On its Facebook account, CBP posted last week: 'Let the games begin. "The first #FIFAClubWorldCup games start on June 14th in Miami, FL at the Hard Rock Stadium. "CBP will be suited and booted and ready to provide security for the first round of games. #CBPxFIFA #FootballUnitesTheWorld.' The post has since been deleted. However, NBC said the post had prompted questions about whether the presence of federal agents was "just part of the overall security team, which is normal for a big event?" This follows demonstrations nationwide, including Dallas and Austin in Texas, and Chicago and New York, after federal immigration raids arrested dozens of workers in Los Angeles. It also comes as Donald Trump continues his huge immigration crackdown and travel ban. And Vice President JD Vance last month warned World Cup travellers not to overstay their welcome. The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will see the World's best players decide which club is the greatest The broadcaster said it was not clear whether the agents will also be checking papers and detaining fans arriving for the game. FIFA today held a press conference to publicise the Club World Cup - the winning side of which will earn up to $125 million. NBC noted, "It's obvious that Fifa would rather focus on the games instead of outside issues." FIFA president Gianni Infantino urged fans to buy tickets despite concerns about the presence of federal agents. He told fans, 'Be part of history, football is such an important sport all over the world. we'll have billions of people watching this from home who would love to come and attend.' BOOSTING SECURITY Infantino was asked whether he had any concerns about ICE and border officials being present at the games. He replied, 'No I don't have any concerns on anything in the sense that we are very attentive on any security questions. "Most important for us is to guarantee security for our fans who will come to the games, this is our priority.' The station stressed that it is normal for local police to partner with federal counterparts and law enforcement agents to provide security at big events. The broadcaster said it had spoken to ICE agents - who had confirmed its officials will be at the games - to provide security. NBC - citing ICE advice - told viewers intending on attending games that all non-American citizens need to carry proof of their legal status. This is particularly vital after the debacle last year, when 7,000 unticketed supporters broke into the Copa America final. Some fans climbed over fences, while others were incredibly seen trying to enter via a ventilation system at the Hard Rock Stadium. More on the Club World Cup 2025 The Club World Cup 2025 will begin on Sunday, June 15, in the UK and Saturday, June 14, in the US. The tournament will run until Sunday, July 13. It is being held across 12 different cities and stadiums in the United States. The whole tournament will be broadcast by DAZN in the UK and US. Matches can be watched on DAZN TV or via the website/app. In the UK, Channel 5 will also air select games on terrestrial TV. But, Thomas Kennedy of the Florida Immigrant Coalition said the federal agents' now-deleted social media warning had caused confusion. He said, 'The messaging that CBP is using is a bit cryptic. "It's sort of alluding that people should have their paperwork in order to attend the games. 'It creates an environment where people are less likely to come watch the games because of just sheer intimidation.' When asked about the security arrangement, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said, 'We're here to make sure people are safe, that's our focus, to work with all of the law enforcement personnel, our safety personnel, and make sure they have a seamless experience."

Family stunned to find their pet Joey the tortoise is actually a girl after 95 YEARS

Joey spent decades being passed down through the family CAME OUT OF SHELL CAME OUT OF SHELL Family stunned to find their pet Joey the tortoise is actually a girl after 95 YEARS A PET tortoise thought to be a boy for 95 years turned out to be a girl. Joey finally came out of her shell at a vet's examination shortly before her death from a stomach tumour last week. 2 Joey, who ate lettuce and strawberries, was well-known among locals in Whitwell Credit: Supplied The African spurred tortoise was bought from high street chain Woolworths in 1930 by Louise Dimmock, as a gift for son Alan. Joey spent the next nine decades being passed down through the family — ending up with Alan's granddaughter Lorraine Steward. The cabin crew trainee, 43, said: 'We always thought he was a boy until we took him to the vets to be examined before his death. 'We knew something was wrong as he wasn't taking his food. 'He had never needed to go to the vet before and it's difficult to check the gender. They were stunned he had done so well. 'They were examining him and revealed, 'I'm led to believe he's actually a girl'. 'We couldn't believe it. Maybe he was more of a Josephine than a Joey all this time. But after knowing him as a boy for 95 years, we're not going to change now.' Joey, who ate lettuce and strawberries, was well-known among locals in Whitwell, Herts. Lorraine added: 'We will all miss him greatly. He lived a simple life. He was very low maintenance and happy as anything.' 2 The pet tortoise thought to be a boy for 95 years turned out to be a girl Credit: Supplied Giant tortoise found again after it was believed to be extinct for a century

Chemical spill at Ohio explosives plant forces evacuations and grounds flights

A chemical leak at an explosives manufacturing plant in Ohio has prompted an entire village to evacuated and grounded flights within thousands of miles. Nitric acid spilled from a tank at Austin Powder Red Diamond plant on Wednesday morning, sending a massive orange-colored plume into the air. A 5,000-gallon tank released 3,000 gallons of the chemical around 8.30am, according to Vinton County EMA spokesman Robert Czechlewski Got a story?
