Defending champion Alcaraz labors into fourth round of the French Open
PARIS (AP) — Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz reached the fourth round of the French Open after a laboring past Damir Dzumhur 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the Friday night session.
The second-seeded Spaniard had never before played Dzumhur, a 33-year-old Bosnian who had never been past the third round at any major tournament.
'I suffered quite a lot today,' Alcaraz said. 'The first two sets was under control, then he started to play more deeply and more aggressively. It was really difficult for me.'
Dzumhur hurt his left knee in a fall in the second round, and had treatment on Friday on his right leg during the changeover at 3-2 down in the third set. He then lay down on the ground while the trainer worked on both legs for several minutes.
The crowd on Court Philippe-Chatrier did a Mexican wave and shouted 'Olé' while it waited.
Then Dzumhur received cheers when he made an improbable smash despite being off balance, again when he won the third set, and once more when he broke Alcaraz in the opening game of the fourth set.
An improbable turnaround seemed to be happening as Alcaraz made clumsy unforced errors. But the four-time Grand Slam champion broke back in the sixth and the eighth games to serve for the match.
Still, the resilient Dzumhur, whose face was red with effort and glistening with sweat, broke back to drag the suspense out a little longer.

Christian Yelich exits Brewers' game against the Phillies with a hand injury
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers designated hitter Christian Yelich left Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies after being hit by a pitch in the first inning. Yelich suffered a right hand contusion, the Brewers announced. He was hit by a 90 mph sinker from Ranger Suarez. He remained in the game but was lifted for pinch hitter Eric Haase in the third. Yelich is batting .233 this season with a team-leading 12 home runs and 39 RBIs. He had four hits in Saturday's 17-7 win over the Phillies and homered twice Friday night. Balogun to miss the CONCACAF Gold Cup, dropped from US roster already without Pulisic, McKennie
FAYETTEVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Forward Folarin Balogun will miss the CONCACAF Gold Cup because of an ankle injury and was among three players dropped Sunday from a roster already without Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Antonee Robinson, Yunus Musah and Gio Reyna. Defender DeJuan Jones (lower body) and midfielder Sean Zawadzki (knee) also were let go by coach Mauricio Pochettino, who added defenders Walker Zimmerman and Nathan Harriel along with forward Paxten Aaronson. Four players have been replaced from the 27-man group announced May 22. Goalkeeper Patrick Schulte injured an oblique and was replaced on Wednesday by Chris Brady. Aaronson, 21, joined 24-year-old brother Brenden on the roster and could play together with him on the national team for the first time. Paxten's lone U.S appearance was in a friendly against Colombia in January 2023. Shane Bieber's second rehab start on Thursday brings hope for Guardians' rotation
CLEVELAND (AP) — Shane Bieber will make his second rehab start on Thursday with the possibility of the 2020 American League Cy Young winner rejoining the Cleveland Guardians rotation by late June or early July. The right-hander — who had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow last April — is scheduled to start for the Double-A Akron RubberDucks after throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings in an Arizona Complex League game on Saturday. Bieber, who turned 30 on Saturday, faced nine batters, allowed one hit and struck out five. Chris Antonetti, Cleveland's president of baseball operations, was pleased that Bieber was averaging 93 mph on his fastball. 'It was really fun to watch Shane just get back out in a competitive setting,' Antonetti said before the Guardians faced the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. 'He's worked on adding some complementary pitches or changing the way some of his pitch profiles look. So his changeup in particular had maybe more depth than it's had in the past.' After spending most of his time at the team's spring training complex in Goodyear, Arizona, Bieber is likely to remain in Northeast Ohio for the remainder of his rebab. The Guardians top affiliates are in Columbus, Akron and Eastlake, Ohio, which are all less than a two-hour drive from Progressive Field. The plan is for Bieber to throw up to 50 pitches again on Thursday before ramping things up. With the two-time All-Star likely to pitch every five days, it is possible his return to the rotation could occur between June 25 through 29, when the Guardians have a homestand against the Toronto Blue Jays and St. Louis Cardinals. 'We have a pretty good plan in place, but the one thing we want to make sure, especially with Tommy John, is that we're really deliberate in helping him get back to a point where once he returns, he's able to pitch for the balance of the season without issues,' Antonetti said. Bieber's return — whenever it is — should provide a lift for a rotation that has struggled the first two-plus months of the season. Guardians' starters went into Sunday's game with the fourth-highest ERA in the American League (4.25).
