India gear up for Hong Kong test in Asian Cup Qualifiers

The Hindu2 days ago

Seeking its first win in the tournament, the Indian football team will face another acid test when it takes on Hong Kong in a crucial AFC Asian Cup 2027 round three qualifier match here on Tuesday.
As per reports in the local media, all 50,000 tickets for the match have been sold out, setting a new attendance record for Hong Kong football.
Manolo Marquez's men will have their task cut out as they face a Hong Kong side that has been revitalised under the guidance of manager Ashley Westwood, who knows a lot about Indian football and will certainly look to use his knowledge to the home side's advantage.
Placed in Pot 1 for the qualifiers, India, ranked 127th, got off to a slow start with a draw against Bangladesh in March.
Meanwhile, Pot 2 side Hong Kong, ranked 153, also managed only a point in Singapore, meaning there is still nothing to separate the four sides in Group C after the first matchday.
For Hong Kong, the day will be a historic. The game is not only a crucial qualifier in their search for only a second AFC Asian Cup berth in 59 years, but also the inaugural football match at the 50,000 seater Kai Tak Stadium, part of the Kai Tak Sports Park, the largest sports complex in Hong Kong.
Featuring a retractable roof and constructed at a cost of HKD 30 billion at the site of the city's former airport, the stadium even features a flexible pitch system for other sports and entertainment events.
It will be India and Hong Kong's 25th meeting since their first in 1951. India lead the head-to-head with nine wins, Hong Kong have eight, while seven have been draws.
However, the Blue Tigers have won only once on Hong Kong soil, a 2-1 friendly victory in 1957.
The previous meeting in 2022 is still fresh in the memories of many — a 4-0 drubbing in a rain-lashed Asian Cup qualifier in Kolkata.
Defender Sandesh Jhingan, however, reiterated that it's "all about now".
'It was quite a comfortable scoreline but since then, Hong Kong have changed a lot. They have a new coach and a lot of new players. So, it's not going to be as easy, and you cannot get complacent or take things lightly.
'Every game on the international stage is tough, especially on away soil. We are preparing in the best way, and we will go for the maximum points on Tuesday,' said the 31-year-old Jhingan.
Since August 2024, Hong Kong have been coached by Westwood, a familiar name in Indian football. The Englishman led Bengaluru FC from 2013 to 2016 and also took charge of ATK and RoundGlass Punjab FC later.
He also coached the Afghanistan side that defeated India in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers last year.
Under Westwood, Hong Kong have only lost once in 12 matches — 0-1 to Liechtenstein in a friendly. But only two wins have come against higher-ranked opponents, Solomon Islands and Philippines (both friendlies).
In preparation for the match against India, Hong Kong played a non-official friendly against Manchester United FC that they lost 1-3 on May 30, and then a FIFA friendly against Nepal on June 5, which was a scoreless affair.
Lallianzuala Chhangte shared his thoughts on the opponents.
'Playing against Hong Kong is a significant challenge because they have a good defensive setup, and we know their coach as well. He has a lot of experience in India,' Chhangte said.
'Hong Kong are a good counter-attacking team as well, and we have to be well aware of that. We have a plan, and it's all about executing. If we go into the game with the right mindset, attitude and hunger, we can win this game,' said the winger, who celebrated his 28th birthday on Sunday.
Apart from the new coach, the Hong Kong squad also features many new naturalised and foreign-born players. Among them are forwards Juninho and Stefan Pereira, midfielder Fernando, and defender Dudu — all born in Brazil.
Spain-born forward Manolo Bleda and Japan-born midfielder Sohgo Ichikawa also made their Hong Kong debuts recently.
Among the experienced lot are goalkeeper Yapp Hung Fai, who has over a century of caps, defenders Sun Ming Him, Yue Tze Nam and Tsui Wang Kit, all of whom ply their trade in the Chinese Super League, and midfielder Tan Chun Lok.
The majority of the squad, however, play their club football in the Hong Kong Premier League for Kitchee SC, Southern District, Lee Man FC, Eastern FC and current champions Tai Po FC.

Steve Smith overtakes Don Bradman, Garfield Sobers; beats Sachin Tendulkar but can't touch Virat Kohli's record

When bowlers of Australia and South Africa picked up 14 wickets on Day 1 of the World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord's, Steve Smith stood tall with the bat in hand. It was business as usual for the former Australia captain. The moving ball, the tumbling of wickets at the other end, didn't affect Smith as he put his head down to provide Australia bowlers with a score that they could defend. The 36-year-old scored 66 runs off 112 balls, which included 10 boundaries after coming in to bat at 16 for 2. In the process, Smith went past legends like Don Bradman, Garfield Sobers and Warren Bradsley to set up a memorable record. Continuing his love affair with the Lord's, Smith became the overseas batter with the most runs at the iconic venue. Smith now has 591 runs in the six matches in which he has featured in 10 innings at the Lord's. The right-hand batter scored has an average of 59.10 at Lord's with the help of three fifties and two hundreds. His highest score at Home of Cricket is 215. Warren Bardsley (575) Sir Garfield Sobers (571) Sir Donald Bradman (551) Shivnarine Chanderpaul (512) Dilip Vengsarkar (508) Allan Border (503) During the match, Steve Smith also overtook legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, climbing up to the second spot among batters with the highest number of fifty-plus scores in ICC tournament knockout matches. This was Smith's seventh fifty-plus score in ICC event knockout matches, overtaking Tendulkar, who had six such scores in 15 matches, scoring 682 runs at an average of 48.71 with a century and five fifties. India's Virat Kohli remains the undisputed king of ICC knockout matches, being the only player to have made 1,000 runs in such matches. He has made 1,024 runs in 22 matches and 24 innings at an average of 51.20, with a century and nine fifties (a total of 10 fifty-plus scores) and best score of 117 against New Zealand in the 2023 World Cup semifinal at Mumbai. Australia lost opener Usman Khawaja and new No.3 Cameron Green to the new ball. Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head did not last long either as Australia were reduced to 67/4 after South Africa captain Temba Bavuma opted to bowl. Smith then found an able partner in young all-rounder Beu Webster. They added 79 runs for the fifth wicket before Smith uncharacteristically nicked off an Aiden Markram delivery. Speaking after the day's play, Smith humorously admitted to an error in judgment that cost him his wicket. "Don't nick the part-time off-spinner. Down the slope. I'm still trying to fathom how I've done that. But yeah, don't do that," Smith said, referring to his dismissal to Markram. Reflecting on the pitch and the evolving nature of the game, Smith added, "Just play what's in front of us. It might take a bit more spin as the game wears on. It's pretty dry. I don't know, the seam might go down as the game goes on as well, potentially. So, I think the bounce is going to be variable throughout the game, as we've seen already on day one." Smith and Webster's gritty half-centuries took Australia to 212 after being invited to bat. Kagiso Rabada breathed fire with the ball, picking up 5 for 51. He ran through Australia's lower middle order Alex Carey was dismissed. Marco Jansebn also pickled up three wickets. Australia, however, gave a strong reply with the ball. Mitchell Starc (2/10), Josh Hazlewood (1/10) and Pat Cummins (1/14) reduced South Africa to 43/4 at Stumps on Day 1, trailing Australia by 169 runs with captain Tema Bavuma and David Belingham at the crease.

‘If Bumrah stays fit for four Tests, India will win in England': Sourav Ganguly's ‘cheat code' for Shubman Gill, Gambhir

Jasprit Bumrah's workload will be the biggest headache for the Indian team management heading into the Test series against England starting June 20 — especially after chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed that the senior pacer is unlikely to feature in all five matches, owing to clear instructions from the BCCI medical team and physios. This has left head coach Gautam Gambhir with the tricky task of figuring out which games would be best to deploy Bumrah. However, former India captain Sourav Ganguly, on Wednesday, offered a 'cheat code' for how India could make the most of Bumrah in their bid to win a Test series in England. Speaking to RevSportz, Ganguly said he has his fingers crossed over Bumrah's fitness throughout the series. He added that even if the management feels the need to rest him for the second game, "so be it" — but stressed that Bumrah must play the final two matches. "Hoping Bumrah remains fit for the five Test matches. Even if it means giving him a break after the 2nd Test match, and then getting him back for the 4th and 5th, because a fit Bumrah will be very important," he said. The India legend then cautioned the new Test captain Shubman Gill on how to utilise Bumrah during the matches and urged Gambhir too keep a close eye on the proceedings and according guide the skipper. "Shubman Gill needs to understand not to bowl Bumrah into the ground. Use him as a wicket-taker, use him in short spells, so that he remains fit for five Test matches. And make sure the others [chip in] – young Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, has got tremendous fitness and ability, and is a warhorse. Make sure Bumrah is used as a wicket-taker. He has got to understand that, and I am sure Gautam [Gambhir] is there, and the senior players there, they will guide him," Ganguly added. Although the Ben Stokes-led side will be heading into the series as favourites in the wake of the sudden retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Ganguly reckoned that if Bumrah can remain fit for even four matches, India could claim their first series win in England in over a decade. "Very inexperienced batting line-up at the moment on paper. Obviously, on the field, it's different. With [Joe] Root, [Harry] Brook, [Ben] Stokes, [Ben] Duckett, Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse, it's a good Test team. But still, nothing stops India from winning. There is no one favourite in sports. India, if they work hard and Bumrah stays fit even for four tests, will win this series."
