The main concerns are the combination of snow, blowing snow and very strong winds in the forecast.

The amount of snow will vary by different locations. According to the KELOLAND Live Doppler HD Storm Center, Snow totals will mainly stay in a 'nuisance' range across the region, with 3 inches or less catching much of the region.
Some local banding from Watertown to Winner will be watched, along with heavier totals tonight southeast of Sioux Falls into NW IA and SW MN.
Road conditions can change quickly as weather develops.
At 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, the South Dakota Department of Transportation said 'rain, freezing rain, snowfall, and extremely high winds are making travel difficult across a large portion of the state.'
No Travel Advisories were in place for U.S. Highway 18, U.S. Highway 83, U.S. Highway 183, S.D. Highway 63, S.D. Highway 44, S.D. Highway 49, S.D. Highway 47, and S.D. Highway 53 in south-central South Dakota.

Storm Center PM Update: Warmth Returns by Tuesday; Rain to Follow
SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — It has been a rather windy day at times, but it has also been mainly quiet otherwise. We've also dealt with another round of smoky skies across a good portion of the region due to Canadian wildfires…with more possible at times on Monday. A wind advisory is in place through Sunday evening from northwestern South Dakota extending south and east through the Sioux Falls area. Gusts may reach and exceed 50 to 55 mph. While much of the morning and afternoon have been quiet, the exception is to the northeast. Some scattered showers and maybe an isolated rumble of thunder or two will be possible as a little impulse of energy sweeps in from north to south. A few of these showers may try to head into southeastern KELOLAND south of Highway 14 overnight, but that will be the exception to the rule. Monday and Tuesday are shaping up to be mainly quiet days beyond a few isolated showers here and there across portions of the region, including along the I-29 corridor on Monday. Better chances for rain arrive as we head into the second half of the week. With heat building, we'll have a little more fuel to work with for pop-up showers and thunderstorms from Wednesday through Friday. While the overall severe threat is pretty low here, it'll still be something to consider if you have outdoor plans in the second half of the week. We'll dry to dry out as we head into the weekend. Of the three day window between Wednesday and Friday, Thursday holds the best overall chance to see some unsettled weather in KELOLAND. Beginning on Tuesday, we'll have some typical June temperatures to enjoy…with highs in the 80s and low 90s at times for several portions of the region. Though a few days may be cooler, that will be due to the aforementioned rain. Beyond the 7 day forecast, odds for above average temperatures are favored. Storm Center AM Update: Mainly Quiet into Monday; Warmth to Return
SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — While most of the day is shaping up to be mainly quiet (Beyond one exception that we'll get to in a moment), we'll also have to contend with smoky skies once again. Smoke from Canadian wildfires will travel along the jet stream and move into the Northern Plains. Those of you with respiratory problems will need to keep this in mind, as air quality concerns will be in place. Visibility may be less than ideal at times as well. Like I mentioned earlier, much of the day is mainly quiet…but the exception is to the northeast. Some scattered showers and maybe an isolated rumble of thunder or two will be possible as a little impulse of energy sweeps in from north to south. While coverage is sparse, it'll be something to consider if you have outdoor plans. A few of these sprinkles may try to head into southeastern KELOLAND, but that will be the exception to the rule. Monday and Tuesday are shaping up to be mainly quiet days beyond a few isolated showers here and there across portions of the region. Better chances for rain arrive as we head into the second half of the week. All the while, that heat that I mentioned sticks around. Widespread 80s with a few 90s are possible from Tuesday through the end of the week, so plan accordingly. Storm Center PM Update: Windy and Cooler Start to the Week
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It was a warm day across KELOLAND and as a cold front passes through, shower and thunderstorm chances are going to increase for the evening. Portions of northeastern KELOLAND are in a marginal risk for severe weather as isolated, strong wind gusts and hail are the main hazards with stronger storms. The broken line of showers and thunderstorms will push eastward and into Minnesota by the overnight hours. Spotty rain chances will linger in West River into Sunday as the low pressure system tries to move off. Behind the front, winds will begin to turn to the northwest and temperatures will cool into the 40s and 50s tonight. The wind will draw back smoke from wildfires into our area and that will linger into tomorrow. While most of it will be aloft, it could get near the surface at times. Stronger winds will start to build in tomorrow morning. Widespread gusts up to 40 MPH are possible across KELOLAND by the afternoon before calming down for tomorrow night. The smoke will also decrease with the wind. We will take two steps back with our temperatures as we return to below average for this time of year. It won't last for too long though as an upper level ridge moves in for the middle of the week. It will feel more like summer with mostly dry conditions and highs in the mid to upper 80s. An unsettled pattern will try to return as we go into the end of next week. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
