Man murdered partner and tried to chop up her body while pretending to her mother she was still alive

An 'evil' killer has admitted murdering and decapitating his 21-year-old girlfriend before texting her mother pretending to be her.
Ewan Methven killed Phoenix Spencer-Horn at their home in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, last November.
The 27-year-old postman later dialled 999 himself insisting he had a drug-induced blackout and could not remember what he had done.
But, it emerged he had also mutilated her body and pretended to her mother she was still alive while trawling the internet for porn for hours.
Methven today admitted the gruesome murder as he appeared in the dock at the High Court in Glasgow.
His own lawyer said those close to Ms Spencer-Horn will regard him as 'the personification of evil'.
The first offender now faces a life sentence when he is back in court next month.
Members of Ms Spencer-Horn's grieving relatives were at the hearing today.
The couple had started dating two years before the killing having met at a party and had recently moved into the top floor, one-bedroom flat together.
He worked as a postman while she held part-time jobs at both the Strathaven Hotel and a local coffee shop.
She had been working on Saturday, November 16, and was described as having been in 'good spirits'.
Methven had texted her during her shift complaining of feeling 'lonely' due to her hours. She apologised to her boyfriend.
He had also been working that morning before telling d a colleague he was going home to 'chill'.
The couple ate a takeaway when Ms Spencer-Horn came back from work that night and she contacted her mother, Alison Spencer, to say she was at home having dinner.
It was the last time she heard from her.
At around midnight a downstairs neighbour heard 'loud noise and hurried footsteps'.
Prosecutor Chris McKenna said: 'At that time, around or shortly after midnight on November 16 through to November 17, Methven attacked Phoenix by compressing her neck and repeatedly stabbing her to the head and body.'
Following the attack he repeatedly arranged to buy drugs via contact on his phone.
When Ms Spencer tried to contact her daughter on the Sunday morning, Methven claimed she was not up yet and that he would get her to message when she was.
The sick killer then later pretended to be his girlfriend and sent a text to her mother saying: 'Hey sorry I've just woken up xxx.'
Another claimed she was 'all good'.
The court heard that minutes after this Methven logged on to the adult websites accessing a 'pornographic video site 170 times'. He was also captured on CCTV driving his partner's car.
Concerns were raised when Ms Spencer-Horn did not turn up for work after the weekend, on November 18.
Methven dialled 999 that afternoon stating he had had 'a drug induced psychotic break' and that he had 'killed' his girlfriend.
He told the operator she remained in the hall with a knife beside her and said he'd been taking steroids and cocaine which he believed had been spiked.
Methven claimed he'd 'totally blacked out through the full thing' but mentioned having 'stabbed' and 'choked' her adding: 'It was f****** horrible.'
When asked if she could still be alive, he replied: 'I know she is dead, mate - she is dead.'
Mr McKenna told the court: 'Phoenix's naked and mutilated body with her head decapitated was discovered by police covered up within the hall of their home.
'An attempt had also been made by him to sever her torso, right wrist and ankle from her body.
'There were two bloodstained knives lying next to the mutilated body. A further bloodstained knife was found discarded in the bedroom.'
Mr McKenna said her head had been placed upright next to her body under her left arm.
Methven was described as 'calm'.
Among the remarks Methven made on his arrest were: 'I could not stay here with her like that. I tried to dismember her. I moved her from the bath and put her there.'
After he was put in a police cell, he said: 'I guess this is what my next 25 years look like.'
Ms Spencer-Horn had suffered a total of 20 stab wounds - the fatal one to the chest.
Methven also yesterday pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to defeat the ends of justice including the mutilation of her body and lying to her mother.
His KC Tony Graham said: 'Those related to Phoenix and those who are friends are likely to regard Ewan Methven as the personification of evil.
'While of little moment, he wishes to express publicly how truly sorry he is for the death.
'He recognises the relatives and friends will never be able to forgive him. He will not be able to forgive himself.
'He understands the bereaved will seek an explanation, but he cannot provide an explanation.'
Lord Matthews continued his remand in custody meantime pending reports.
The judge said: 'You have pleaded guilty to an appalling and horrible crime.'
Methven will learn the minimum he will spend behind bars next month.
Following his guilty plea, Detective Chief Inspector Susie Cairns said: 'My thoughts remain with Phoenix's family and friends as they continue to try to come to terms with what happened.
'Methven now faces the consequences of his actions.
'Violence such as this is never acceptable in our communities, and we will work tirelessly to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.'

Nudist resort resident's 'hot dog taunt' on neighbor that ended in double murder

An elderly couple were killed and mutilated by their neighbor after being humiliated with a taunt about a hot dog, a court heard. Michael Royce Sparks, 62, is facing murder charges over the deaths of Stephanie Menard, 73, and Daniel Menard, 79, who were brutally killed at their nudist community, the Olive Dell Ranch, in Redlands, California. The couple were found in August 2024 underneath a concrete bunker at Sparks' home. At a Monday hearing for Sparks as he prepares to stand trial, a witness in their nudist community testified that the suspect and his alleged victims often argued and had a fraught relationship for some time before the killings. They said they lived next door to each other, and had clashed over issues including a tree overhanging the Menards' yard and a noisy generator. But the witness said the rift turned violent due to Sparks feeling humiliated after Menard bought him a $1 hot dog. The story was also told by a Redlands police officer who testified Monday that another inmate was told the same story by Sparks about how he snapped when he was bought the hot dog. 'He said Mr. Sparks told him the incident started over a hot dog that Daniel Menard had purchased for him,' Redlands police Detective Thomas Williams said. 'He said Mr. Sparks felt that the hot dog was a jab at him, making him feel like he was worth only a dollar hot dog, and that's what set him off that day.' Sparks 'went outside and struck Mr. Menard in the head until his head caved in', the Williams said, recalling the inmate's words. Michael's wife Stephanie then came outside yelling 'no, no', the detective said, leading Sparks to 'begin striking (her) and (Michael) with a rake, a hoe and a hammer'. The detective said the inmate at at West Valley Detention Center was told that Sparks then took the Menards to a concrete bunker he had built underneath his trailer, reports The Mercury News. He allegedly told fellow prisoners that he dismembered Stephanie and mutilated Michael, and during a search of his home police found body parts stuffed in plastic bags and a Home Depot bucket. Sparks also allegedly told other inmates that he drowned the Menards' Shih Tzu dog in a sink before leaving her on a hillside for coyotes to eat her. At the preliminary hearing on Monday, Sparks' attorney did not present a defense. A judge subsequently ruled that there is sufficient evidence for Sparks to stand trial for the murder of the couple, which he has pleaded not guilty to. Prosecutors have not yet said if they will seek the death penalty in the case. Many residents of the California nudist community where the alleged killer and his victims appeared at the hearing, with Sparks described as a popular figure in the community. The Menards were missing for four days before the case turned into a homicide investigation and a former co-worker of Sparks came forward with a stunning text Sparks had sent her the day of the killings. She said she recognized the nudist community where police were searching on the news, and texted Sparks: 'I am watching news. Something going on where you live. Are you in town?' According to texts shown in court on Monday, Sparks replied: 'It's me. Committing suicide today. Take care. Bye.' 'Wait. What's going on? Where are you?' she responded. 'Chopped up my neighbors. Didn't know I had it in me. SNAPPED,' Sparks said back. Cops then raced to Sparks' home, where they found him in his trailer bunker holding a long rifle. Sparks tried to shoot himself, but the rifle jammed, and when asked by cops where the Menards were, he said 'they were underneath the trailer and that they didn't need any help', Williams said in his testimony.

Ex-marine jailed for abuse of seven boys denied landlord registration

A former Royal Marine who sexually abused a number of boys has been denied permission to let flats in the capital. Rowland Reilly, who owns ten flats in Edinburgh, applied from prison to rejoin the landlord register, with his previous registration having lapsed in 2021. Councillors refused the request, saying his conviction made him not a fit person to let property in the city. Reilly, 59, abused seven boys in his care between 1984 and 1989 during his time as a non-commissioned officer in the Royal Marines. All the boys were members of the Royal Marines Cadets, with the abuse taking place at several locations in Scotland, including Loch Lomond, the Pentland Hills and RM Condor in Arbroath. At his trial in 2023, the High Court in Edinburgh heard that some of his victims have been left with long-term mental health issues. At the time, the court heard that Reilly had gotten several of his underage victims drunk before assaulting them. Reilly pleaded guilty to charges of indecent assault and lewd and libidinous conduct in 2023 and was sentenced to four years in prison. He was granted a short time on bail to resolve his business affairs, which included running his car dealership. Before the committee made a decision, convener and Conservative councillor Joanna Mowat said: 'I don't think we can accept them onto the register as a landlord. They have demonstrated that they are not a fit and proper person. 'I recommend that we don't accept Mr Reilly onto the register of landlords.' Earlier in the meeting, council officer Andrew Mitchell said: 'The applicant has declared a conviction for which he is serving a custodial sentence. 'Officers are recommending that the committee refuse entry to the register based on that conviction.' A police liaison officer in the room said: 'Routine police assessment checks carried out identified a previous conviction, which is considered as unspent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. The conviction was held at the Edinburgh High Court on November 10, 2023. 'Charges one and two were of lewd, indecent and libidinous behaviour with aggravation of child and a male under 13. 'Charges three to seven were was indecent assault, again with aggravation of child and sexual offence against a male over 13 and under 16. 'He was convicted of a sexual offence with a notification requirement. 'Some of these offences are between 1984 and 1989, the applicant did sexually abuse children and young men in various locations throughout Scotland. 'We are of the opinion that due to the serious sexual nature of his offences, he would not be a fit and proper person to be a landlord.' Liberal Democrat councillor Jack Caldwell asked officers about the applicant's letting history, saying: 'How common is it for a landlord application to have ten properties in it? Because, in my view, you don't just get 10 properties out of nowhere before you register.' Mr Mitchell replied: 'I think there are a number of landlords out there with properties where they will have individual circumstances where they allow their registration to lapse. 'This is an attempt to get back on the register in these circumstances. That's all.'
