EBR schools, local judge reward students for good grades
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) – There's no doubt that getting a scholarship as a prize for good grades is exciting, but do you know what makes that even better? Getting a free car.High school juniors and seniors were all smiles as names were called out to win scholarships, chrome books, and even a Chevrolet Trailblazer.Throwing such a big celebration of these students' success is a tradition going strong for more than a decade at the Baton Rouge River Center.One of the men who got it all started is a judge here in town.Judge Wilson Fields with the First Circuit Court of Appeals says, 'We want to bring some excitement to those students who are achieving academically,' said First Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Wilson Fields. 'All of the students in here have a 3.0 or above cumulative G.P.A. We want to display our state colleges and universities to them, to keep the best and brightest in Louisiana.'Every state college participated, rewarding students with about $700,000 in scholarships in total. 'One student will win a car, thanks to our sponsor Gerry Lane, and some students are going to get Chromebooks from our sponsor Cox Communications,' Fields mentioned.
Fields believes these are all excellent extra motivators to get good grades.
The event is getting even more support nowadays and is sponsored by the Mayor-President's office and CareSouth Health Services.

ESPN's Bill Barnwell pegged Fields as an offseason signing who "could break out - or flop." "While the Steelers went 4-2 with Fields throwing just one interception on 161 pass attempts, the best version of a Fields-led offense has to commit to his ability to create explosive plays" Wrote Barnwell. "He has taken sacks on nearly 12% of his dropbacks as a pro, plays that usually kill drives. His 40.9% success rate as a passer ranks 24th out of 25 quarterbacks with at least 1,200 dropbacks over the past four seasons, per NFL Next Gen Stats. 1 injured after train hits vehicle in Livingston Parish

The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office said the incident happened near East Railroad and Highway 190 in Livingston around 4:15 p.m. The injury is not considered to be life-threatening.
