I was deported from the US for a trivial reason... now I get a lump in my throat when I visit other countries
An Aussie woman says she is constantly worried about being barred from other countries after she was deported from America for a trivial reason.
Madolline Gourley recently applied for a working holiday visa for a visit to Canada and had a shocking 2022 experience in the back of her mind.
Three years ago the Brisbane local flew into Los Angeles for a pet-sitting holiday, but was denied entry to the US because she was in violation of her ESTA visa waiver.
It was because the free use of an owner's home was considered a form of payment and anyone with an ESTA visa waiver is not allowed to work.
She spent 75 days in the US in early 2022, which Ms Gourley sensed the officer was looking at as he questioned her.
'He started asking things like why I spent so long in the US, where did I go on that trip and why was I back again so soon,' she said.
'I told him I was able to get around to so many places because I looked after people's cats - unpaid, of course, and through a legitimate house sitting website - in cities and towns I wanted to visit.'
Just hours after she arrived at LAX, she was kicked out of the country and sent back to Australia.
And it was on her mind as she planned her working holiday to Canada.
'The US, Canada, Australia, the UK and New Zealand share the information collected by their immigration departments,' Ms Gourley told Sydney Morning Herald.
She applied under the International Experience Canada program, and one question worried her.
Her application asked: 'Have you ever been refused a visa or permit, denied entry to, or ordered to leave Canada or any other country/territory?'
'That had been weighing on my mind a lot,' Ms Gourley said.
'How being refused entry to the United States would affect future visa applications. I wasn't sure if telling the truth would result in an instant rejection, but thankfully there was an option to attach a letter outlining the particulars.
'I wrote a two-page letter and two weeks later I got an email saying my application status had been updated.
'I logged in and scrolled down to see my work permit had been approved.
'This was pretty exciting because it meant I was able to house and cat sit in Canada, and I could get a paid job if I wanted to.'
Ms Gourley did the right thing, but had she lied about ever being denied entry to another country the consequences could have been serious.
She even has a stamp in her passport from the US Department of Homeland Security Customs and Border Protection that reads: 'Refused in accordance with INA section 217.'
It means she's a non-US citizen who has been determined by an immigration officer to be ineligible for admission.
When she got to Canada she said the immigration officer only cared for her passport.
'He said to take a seat and wait for my name to be called. I didn't know what the next steps would entail, but my work permit was printed within 10 minutes,' she said.
'It was valid for two years from July 5, 2023.
'The only other thing the officer said to me was I'd need the work permit details to apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN).
'A SIN is required before I can start working in Canada, and apparently it gives me access to certain government benefits.'
Last month Ms Gourley flew to New Zealand and was again worried about answering 'yes' to the question 'Have you been deported, removed, barred or refused entry to another country?' on the traveller declaration.
'A Qantas staff member had to call NZ Immigration, and I was asked several questions before the officer went to discuss my situation with his colleague,' she said.
'The passport block was lifted, and I was able to check in, but all of this happened before I'd even left Australia.'
But if she wants to go back to the US, she needs a B2 visa, which requires an interview in Australia.
Deportation from a country generally means someone has committed a crime. Being deported from a country has serious implications for future travel.
In most countries you can't go back for at least a year and sometimes bans are permanent.
A deportation order goes on a person's permanent immigration file, and countries share the information.
In March 2025, someone was denied entry to the US because he flew from Sydney to New York via Hong Kong rather than taking a more direct route.
His did it to save money, but it looked suspicious to US authorities.

UK seaside town among top 5 most complained about beaches worldwide - have YOU ever visited?
As summer arrives and temperatures start to rise, millions of holidaymakers are gearing up for the perfect beach escape either at home and abroad. But finding your own piece of paradise can be challenging when you're sharing the beach with thousands of other visitors - and before you know it, a relaxing day at a coastal haven can quickly turn into a holiday hell. Luckily, beachgoers far and wide can plan accordingly before visiting a picture-postcard destination this summer, as the world's most complained about beaches have been revealed. A new study has analysed TripAdvisor reviews from 200 of the world's most popular beaches - uncovering the locations consistently disappointing tourists despite their exceptional reputations. The research assessed negative keywords used in reviews, such as 'overcrowded,' 'dirty,' 'long queues,' 'noise' and 'disruption' to filter the reviews, then looked at how often they were applied to each beach to compute an overall complaint score. European beaches dominated the overcrowding category, U.S. hotspots were ranked least clean, Caribbean and North American beaches were found to be most noisy, while Island destinations were revealed to have some of the worst queues. Scoring a perfect 100 out of 100 score, Waikiki Beach in Hawaii, U.S., topped the overall complaint list primary due to overcrowding, along with lack of cleanliness, noise and long queues. Over two-thirds of negative reviews cited uncomfortable overcrowding that transforms the popular tourist spot into what one visitor dubbed 'a human sardine can.' Venice Beach in California followed closely behind in second place with an 89.7 out of 100 complaint score, driven primarily by cleanliness concerns (60.6%). One TripAdvisor reviewer at Venice Beach wrote that it 'is dirty and some parts even smelled like urine.' Coming in third place in the Cloudwards study, with a complaint score of 73.5 is Playa Manuel Antonio in Costa Rica, as over half of negative reviews citing overcrowding, while over a quarter complained of long queues. Some visitors mentioned spending more time waiting than actually enjoying the beach, as one wrote: 'The line to get in the park, where the beach is located, is crazy long, as not only beachgoers are waiting, but people interested in the park and tours.' Clearwater Beach in the United States was ranked fourth with a complaint score of 65.5, as almost a fifth of negative reviews described the beach as 'dirty,' while a staggering 64 per cent of visitors specified overcrowding as a prevalent issue. Popular British destinations also ranked highly in overall complaints, with Bournemouth Beach coming in fifth place with a score of 65.1. Over a third of negative reviews complained of lack of cleanliness, while over half highlighted overcrowding as a persistent problem. Two additional UK beaches made the top 100: Weymouth Beach ranked 30th with a complaint score of 39.5, while Gorleston-on-Sea Beach ranked 91st with a score of 19.8. Leading the European destinations with the highest percentage of overcrowding complaints is La Pelosa in Italy, while Elafonissi Beach in Greece ranked seventh on overall complaints, with over 70 per cent of reviews citing overcrowding as an issue. During peak season at La Pelosa, visitors reported having to arrive early to claim a prime spot, only to find themselves still touching shoulders with strangers. One visitor to La Pelosa wrote: 'It was a weekday morning in mid-September yet the crowds resembled central London/New York/Sydney on New Year's Eve.' Playa Delfines in Mexico earned the dubious honour of worst queues, with over half of visitors complaining of long wait times. Sint Maarten's Maho Beach ranked as the noisiest destination, with a large number of complaints mentioning excessive noise - unsurprising given that the beach is located directly under an airport flight path where planes pass just meters above. A visitor to Maho Beach wrote: 'The smell of jet fuel is sickening and the blast of sand in the face from the jets is painful and like standing in front of a sand blaster.' Cloudwards CEO, Mauricio Preuss, said of the findings: 'For travellers, this research underscores the importance of looking beyond the highlight reel. 'The most rewarding beach experiences might be found at lesser-known destinations that haven't yet been overwhelmed by mass tourism. 'Sometimes the best paradise is the one that isn't trending on TikTok.' The full list of 100 most complained about beaches can be found here. But if you're looking at where to go instead, the best beaches in the world for 2025 have been ranked.

How to generate £500,000+ from a client event
SHOWCASING SPECIALISMS Homing in on one destination has worked well for Sam Smith Travel. The Welsh agency, part of Ocky White Travel, netted £200,000 worth of bookings from a Japan-themed client dinner, then around £500,000 from an in-agency Australasia weekend. The Japan evening saw VIP bookers and customers who'd expressed an interest in the destination treated to a meal at Ivy Asia Cardiff. It was sponsored, at the agency's request, by Japan National Tourism Organisation, which even sent its Tokyo head. A Wendy Wu representative also attended. After some 'short, sharp and sweet presentations, the vibe was prosecco and talk about Japan', says sales and commercial manager Suzanne Cumpston. Knowing there would be a buzz around Australia thanks to the British and Irish Lions rugby tour this year, Sam Smith later held three fizz-fuelled social drop-in days to talk holidays down under. A BBC radio interview on the topic helped alert listeners to the agency's tailor-made expertise. Ahead of the event, Sam Smith staff updated their knowledge of products and trends by completing Aussie Specialist Program modules. They also primed Australasia experts at several operators to take enquiries during the weekend, with Prestige proving particularly helpful. 'It's not just about the event and it's not just about the revenue you do on that day or the halo effect within a week or two; you become famous for a destination. Maybe months down the line they remember us as an Australia specialist,' explains Cumpston. Sam Smith deliberately showcases destinations that suit the tailor-made strengths of independent agencies. Similar events highlight how it can book individual cruise lines face-to-face. Results from a Celebrity Cruises event included a group booking. 'I think people need more hand-holding with cruise,' Cumpston points out. To further raise the agency's profile, the venue for next year's key event will be a castle. Analysing favourite and trending holidays is important for picking a theme, Cumpston advises. 'Know your audience, know your market, and go in heavy with the marketing side of things. Be switched on inviting the right people to the event.' Sam Smith Travel builds events around single destinations INCENTIVISING BOOKERS Magic Vacations in Kinsale, Ireland is in the sixth year of its Big 10 travel event. Each September more than 1,000 attendees meet 10 of its core tour operator, theme park and cruise line suppliers. Prizes are up for grabs and upgrades are given to those booking within a certain time window. The event now generates around €250,000 worth of sales in the following fortnight alone. Codes for Big 10 sales help the team track what's working and what can be built on for the following year. The agency also gains marketing opt-ins from those who reserve free tickets to the event. 'Really, September for us is as big as January,' says managing director John Barrett. Keeping the event 'tight and relevant' is the key to its success, he explains. 'We're actually turning suppliers away – we need them to tie in with our core product.' The theme park and cruise specialist knew it was originally a big ask to get suppliers such as Disney, Universal and Legoland to an event beyond Dublin, but its close relationships helped and now 'they have the belief that the event is going to be a success'. In a similarly ambitious move, Magic Vacations spent a year-and-a-half negotiating a significant cruise embarkation from Cobh (Cork) which it was able to sell at its 2024 Big 10 event. The agency had an allocation of 50 cabins on MSC Virtuosa, which sold out in 48 hours. 'We could have sold 200!' says Barrett, who now has his sights set on having a major ex-Cork cruise to sell at each Big 10. It comes down to 'thinking outside of the box', he says.
