Pahalgam terror attack: Top MHA, Intelligence Bureau officials meet to discuss internal security measures
NEW DELHI: Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan on Thursday held a high-level security review meeting with Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) Tapan Deka, and the Chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) Ravi Sinha amid concerning situations emerging in the aftermath of the terror attack near Pahalgam town in Jammu and Kashmir, sources said.
The agenda of the meeting has officially not been disclosed. However, the sources said that the deliberations assumed significance due to the presence of top security and intelligence functionaries, which indicated that discussions took place with regard to key national security or internal affairs matters.
The sources also indicated that since the meeting took place a day after the government announced some of the decisions taken by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the top security and intelligence brass must have deliberated on the plans with regard to special internal security measures.
Announcing the decisions of the CCS on Wednesday evening, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced the suspension of the
downgrading bilateral ties and shutting down the Attari check-post.
These measures have been taken to hit back at Islamabad in the aftermath of the brazen attack in
Meanwhile, it is learnt that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will soon be handed over the case by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), considering the gravity of the incident. The official decision in this matter is yet to be taken.
However, in the meantime, the NIA is assisting Jammu and Kashmir Police in the investigation, and the team led by an Inspector General-rank officer visited Baisaran on Wednesday.
The NIA's assistance to J&K Police underscores a key role in the overall investigation, as Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba's offshoot, the Resistance Front (TRF), has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The NIA team is expected to conduct a thorough assessment of the attack site, collect forensic evidence, and help in identifying those responsible for the carnage, a senior agency official said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who had reached Srinagar a few hours after the deadly attack, vowed strict action and assured that the perpetrators 'will not be spared'.

Shillong: The Meghalaya Police has claimed that Sonam Raghuvanshi, after the murder of Indore-based transport businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, traveled from Shillong to Indore via Siliguri by train. While addressing the media, Shillong SP Vivek Syiem said that Sonam arrived in Indore on May 25 and stayed in a rented room. She also met the alleged lover and co-accused in the case, Raj Kushwaha in Indore. After that, she traveled to Varanasi in a rented car and later surrendered in Ghazipur. 'We have received the information that Sonam came to Indore and stayed in a rented flat in Dewas Naka area between May 25 and 27,' the official said, adding that Meghalaya Police will be able to give detailed information. A Meghalaya Police team, meanwhile, visited one of the accused Vishal Chauhan's house in Indore. Indore's Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Dandotia said a 12-member team of Meghalaya Police left for Shillong with the four accused — Raj Kushwaha, Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput and Anand Kurmi — after obtaining their transit custody from a court. According to Meghalaya Police sources, the conspiracy to murder Raja was plotted by Sonam and Raj. As per the plan, Raj stayed back in Indore while Akash, Vishal, and Anand came to Shillong. The weapon used to kill Raja — a dao (a small axe) — was ordered online from Guwahati. Akash, Vishal, and Anand stayed at a hotel just one kilometer away from Sonam and Raja's homestay in Shillong. Sonam had their contact numbers. How things unfolded: After their wedding on May 11 in Indore, Raja and Sonam travelled to the northeastern state for honeymoon. They disappeared on May 23, hours after checking out of a homestay at Nongriat village Nongriat village is 20 km from where Raja's body was found on June 2. Raja was killed by three men allegedly hired by Sonam, who went 'missing'. She surfaced in UP's Ghazipur on Sunday night where she surrendered at the Nandganj police station after Akash Rajput (19), Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), and Anand Kurmi were arrested from UP and Indore and Sagar towns. Raj Singh Kushwaha (21), the alleged conspirator, was arrested later. Prima facie, there is no previous criminal record against all four accused, aged 20 to 25 years, in local police stations, an Indore Police official said Kushwaha and three other accused are currently in the transit custody of Meghalaya Police. A tourist guide from Sohra in Meghalaya, who alerted police about the presence of three men accompanying Raja and Sonam on the day they went missing, on Tuesday claimed that he identified one of the suspects after seeing some photographs. The autopsy report of Raja Raghuvanshi indicated that he was hit twice with a sharp object on his head, officials at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) said.

New Delhi: Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, was brought to Shillong overnight. She is in a three-day transit remand with the Meghalaya Police. Here are the top updates on honeymoon murder case: Sonam Raghuvanshi was taken to Bihar's Patna last evening via road from Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur - where she had surrendered before the police. She was then flown from Patna to Kolkata and was put on a flight to Guwahati at 9:20 pm. The murder accused was brought out of the airport by the Meghalaya police through the cargo gate and taken to the Sadar police station in Shillong. The Meghalaya police took Sonam to the Ganesh Das hospital for her medical test and brought her back to the police station, where she spent the night. The other four accused - Raj Kushwaha (Sonam's alleged lover and the mastermind of the murder), Anand Kurmi, Akash Rajput, and Vishal Singh Chauhan - have also been taken to Shillong separately. They will also be kept in jail and produced before the local court. As the Meghalaya Police team was entering the Indore airport with the four accused, a passenger waiting with his luggage slapped one of the killers, apparently expressing his anger over the crime that has shocked the nation. As the accused were wearing masks, it was not known who among the four accused was slapped. Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam got married on May 11. Nine days later, they left for their honeymoon in Meghalaya on May 20 - with a one-way ticket in hand. The couple roamed around the breathtaking hills for three days before going "missing". On May 23, Sonam took Raja to a hilly area on the pretext of a photoshoot. The three accused also followed them and initially spoke to Raja in Hindi. Eventually, Sonam pretended to be tired and started walking much behind her husband and the killers. As the five people reached a deserted place, Sonam shouted "kill him" - to the killers, sources said. Sonam's lover Raj was not involved in the actual murder. He did not travel to Meghalaya, but Shillong Police sources suggested he did the planning behind the scenes and was in touch with Sonam. It is alleged that Sonam had promised Rs 20 lakh to the "contract killers" - described as Raj's friends - to kill Raja. Officials said that the Meghalaya Police knew on June 3, a day after they found the body of Raja Raghuvanshi in a gorge, that Sonam was involved in the murder. They then formed a 20-member core team to find the accused in an operation that they codenamed 'Operation Honeymoon'. On the night of June 7, officials said they found Sonam in an unconscious state at a 'dhaba' in Ghazipur. She was taken to the Ghazipur Medical College for treatment, where she surrendered before the police, and was subsequently arrested. Police also arrested the three "contract killers" in overnight raids. The family of Raja Raghuvanshi, the Indore-based businessman who was found dead during his honeymoon in Meghalaya, has demanded justice after the victim's wife surrendered to killing him. Raja's brother, Sachin, said that Sonam being found alive raises many questions. The Indore-based businessman's sister slammed Sonam, saying she could have "eloped if she liked someone else". "My brother had vowed to be with Sonam Raghuvanshi for seven lives, but she couldn't stay with him for even seven days. What did he do that you killed him," she said. Sources said that Sonam's family knew she did not want to marry Raja. The murder accused's mother was also aware of her relationship with Raj, who was an employee of her family-run business.
