Tengku Zafrul: Google's Malaysia investment to boost AI growth, create jobs
KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 — Tech giant Google's investment in Malaysia is expected to continue driving Malaysia's artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing economy.
Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who is currently on a working visit to Washington, United States, met with Google representatives to discuss how the company can continue to drive AI development in Malaysia, strengthen cybersecurity and invest in digital skills.
'The government is committed to providing full support and ensuring a conducive investment climate for high-quality investments,' he said in a Facebook post.
He added that Google's strategic investment of RM9.4 billion to set up its first data centre and Google Cloud region in Malaysia is expected to generate RM15.04 billion in long-term economic impact and create 26,500 jobs by 2030.

Johor oil store fire: Nine out of 10 affected premises lacked valid licences, says JB City Council
JOHOR BARU, June 22 — The Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) has identified 10 premises operated by different companies within the site of a fire at a lorry and engine oil storage facility in Jalan Cenderai, Taman Kota Puteri, Masai, covering an estimated area of 64,664 square metres. Johor Baru Mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad said investigations found that only one of the premises, a palm oil storage facility, had been licensed by the council and the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB). He said the remaining businesses, including a car wash, vehicle parking, a used items dealer, and workshops, were found to be operating without valid licences, and the council would take further action against those involved. 'The land was leased to these premises, but we found only the palm oil storage facility to be licensed. Therefore, MBJB will take further action, including requesting the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) to act, especially since one of the tenants deals in scrap materials,' he told reporters after visiting the scene today. Earlier, Bernama's check at the scene found that the road leading to the fire site had been cordoned off by authorities. Members of the public were seen gathering in the area since early this morning to view the aftermath of the blaze. The Fire and Rescue Department's Operations Centre (JBPM) received an emergency call about the incident at 12.54 pm yesterday, and 34 personnel with assets from multiple fire stations, including auxiliary units, were deployed to the location. Five premises were affected in the fire, which destroyed an area of about 1,000 square metres and 15 vehicles. — Bernama

MoF: New SST registration opens Aug 1 as tax scope expands in July to include construction, education, beauty services
KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 — The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has announced that new registration applications in relation to the expansion of the service tax scope and the revision of the sales tax rate, effective from July 1, 2025, can be made starting from Aug 1, 2025. For existing registered persons, applications for the addition of new services under the expansion of the service tax scope and tariff codes under the revision of the sales tax rate, which is effective from July 1, 2025, can be submitted beginning June 24, 2025, the ministry said in a post on X today. On June 9, the government announced a targeted review of the sales tax rate and an expansion of the service tax scope, both of which will take effect from July 1. The sales tax rate remains unchanged for essential goods, while a five or 10 per cent rate will be imposed on selected items. Meanwhile, the scope of the service tax will be expanded to include six new services: leasing or rental, construction, finance, private healthcare, education, and beauty services. Treasury secretary-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican reportedly said that revenue from the Sales and Service Tax (SST) collection is expected to increase by RM5 billion in 2025 and by RM10 billion in 2026, following the implementation of the SST revised and expanded scope starting next month. — Bernama

New electricity tariff ‘demonstrates reform' in energy sector, says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 — The implementation of the new electricity tariff schedule starting July 1 is a clear reflection of the major reforms being undertaken by the government, particularly in the national energy sector, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Fahmi, who is also the Madani Government spokesperson, said the initiative aligns with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which aims to increase the use of renewable energy (RE) and reduce carbon emissions by 2050. 'Under the new tariff schedule, 85 per cent of domestic consumers or account holders are expected to enjoy the same, or even lower, electricity rates starting July 1, 2025, provided their monthly usage does not exceed 1,000 kilowatt hours,' he said. 'This is one of the key reforms being advanced in a coordinated manner by the government, together with the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra), the Energy Commission (ST), and Tenaga Nasional Berhad. It demonstrates that efforts to implement renewal or reform can still deliver tangible benefits to the people,' he said. Fahmi said this to reporters at the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya's Kita Madani Carnival at IWK Eco Park, Pantai Dalam, here today. Also present was Information Department director-general Julina Johan. On Friday, the ST announced that more than 23.6 million domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia will benefit from fairer and more progressive electricity rates due to the newly approved electricity tariff schedule approved by the government. ST, in a statement, said that this tariff determination will take effect from July 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027, under the Incentive-Based Regulation (IBR) framework, in line with the provisions of Section 26, Electricity Supply Act 1990. It said that the electricity tariff changes for the Regulatory Period 4 (RP4) involve the restructuring of the following three components, namely the average base tariff rate; the new tariff schedule; and the fuel cost adjustment mechanism. The Average Base Tariff Rate for the RP4 period has been set at 45.40 sen/kWh, slightly lower than the 45.62 sen/kWh approved in December 2024 — reflecting an overall reduction of up to 19 per cent in the average electricity tariff compared with RP3. Earlier, Fahmi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai, officiated the Kita Madani Carnival, which aims to bring the community closer to government services through a casual, informative programme that highlights current issues, policies, and initiatives in line with the Malaysia Madani concept. The programme, among other things, featured Rahmah Madani Sale and Agro Madani sale, sports competitions for children, as well as exhibitions involving 21 government agencies, including counters for traffic summons payments and driving licence renewals. — Bernama
