Swiss packaging firm SIG commits to invest Euro 100 million more in India

Bern [Switzerland], June 10 (ANI): SIG Group, the Swiss packaging solutions provider with over 170 years of heritage, announced plans to invest an additional Euro 100 million in India, building on its existing Euro 200 million commitment as the company capitalises on the country's growing consumer market and government support for foreign investment. Talking exclusively to ANI, Samuel Sigrist, CEO of SIG Group, made the announcement during Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal's visit to Switzerland, praising the Indian government's commitment to supporting foreign direct investment and outlining ambitious expansion plans for the world's most populous nation. 'I had a very positive meeting,' Sigrist said, referring to his discussions with Minister Goyal. 'I am impressed by the level of detail the minister is involved in and his commitment to support Foreign Direct Investment in India. We are very pleased with the administration and the support we get.' The CEO's comments underscore the growing confidence international companies have in India's business environment under the current administration's investment-friendly policies. SIG's success in India is built on partnerships with some of the country's most recognizable consumer brands. The company's packaging solutions are prominently featured on household names, including Frooti, Maaza, and various Amul products, demonstrating its deep integration into India's consumer goods ecosystem. 'We are partnering in India with big names. Those are really household brands,' Sigrist explained. 'You will find our packaging on brands like Frooti, Maaza... You will also find a lot of different products from have already committed to the next phase of our plant. We invested already EUR200 million and have committed now another EUR100 million to keep expanding in India.' The company's extensive client roster also includes major players such as Coca-Cola, Dabur, PepsiCo (Varun Beverages), Heritage dairy, MilkyMist, Haldirams, Hamdard, Godrej Jersey, and ITC, positioning SIG as a critical supplier to India's food and beverage industry. SIG has established a comprehensive manufacturing footprint across India with facilities strategically located in key industrial hubs. The company operates two offices in Gurgaon and Mumbai, supported by four production facilities manufacturing various packaging solutions. The company's manufacturing infrastructure includes two flexible packaging plants in Palghar, Maharashtra, a filling line manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune, and its flagship aseptic carton packaging plant in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This network has created over 300 direct employment opportunities across the country over the past decade. SIG's Ahmedabad facility represents a significant milestone in the company's Indian operations. After signing an MOU with the Gujarat government in September 2023, the company completed construction of its first aseptic carton plant in India in just 20 months, with commercial production beginning in Q1 2025. The facility, built with an initial investment of approximately Euro 90 million (Rs 880 crores), reflects SIG's commitment to the Make-in-India initiative. The investment is planned in phases from 2023-2027, initially targeting production capacity of up to 4 billion packs per annum, with subsequent investments expected to increase capacity to 10 billion packs annually. SIG's technology is playing a crucial role in modernizing India's dairy industry, which is undergoing significant transformation. The company's aseptic packaging technology offers preservative-free, shelf-stable solutions that require no refrigeration, making them ideal for India's diverse geography and infrastructure challenges. This technology ensures food safety, extends shelf life, and significantly reduces food waste, particularly beneficial in high-temperature and remote regions. Recent innovations include MilkyMist's probiotic buttermilk launch, which brings advanced nutrition in a shelf-stable format to mass markets. The company is actively collaborating with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), leading dairy cooperatives, and private dairies to create an ecosystem positioning India as the global dairy capital while supporting farmers, consumers, and national food security goals. Founded in 1853 and headquartered in Neuhausen, Switzerland, SIG has established itself as a global leader in sustainable packaging solutions for liquid food and beverages. The company serves customers in over 100 countries through its workforce of approximately 9,600 employees worldwide. In 2024, SIG produced 57 billion packs and generated Euro 3.3 billion in revenue. The company's commitment to sustainability is recognized through its AAA ESG rating by MSCI, Platinum CSR rating by EcoVadis, and inclusion in the FTSE4Good Index. SIG's unique portfolio includes aseptic carton, bag-in-box, and spouted pouch solutions, enabling the company to provide end-to-end solutions for differentiated products, smarter factories, and connected packaging. The company's technology and innovation capabilities address evolving consumer needs while supporting its mission to create a regenerative food packaging system. With its additional Euro 100 million commitment, SIG's total investment in India will exceed Euro 300 million, reflecting the company's long-term confidence in the Indian market. This expansion aligns with India's growing consumer base of 1.4 billion people and the country's increasing focus on food safety, sustainability, and modern packaging solutions. The investment announcement comes as international companies increasingly view India as a critical growth market, supported by favorable government policies, a large consumer base, and improving infrastructure. SIG's success story demonstrates how foreign companies can build substantial operations in India while contributing to local employment, technology transfer, and industrial development. (ANI)

Swiss industry leaders express confidence in India's market size, growing business opportunities

Bern [Switzerland], June 11 (ANI): Swiss industry leaders have expressed confidence in India's market size and expanding business opportunities, adding that India-EFTA trade agreement will play a pivotal role in boosting investment and creating jobs. Under the India-EFTA trade agreement, EFTA countries have committed an investment of USD 100 billion in 15 years. There would be lower to zero import duties on several Swiss and other products such as watches, chocolates, and cut and polished diamonds. The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) comprises Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Hans Christian Schneider, CEO of Amman Group, a sixth-generation privately-held company known for road construction machinery, said that he is very positive. 'I believe this is absolutely doable. We as a mid-sized company have invested in India over the last few years. When I see what has changed in the meantime in the framework conditions in India, and the attractiveness of the Indian market for FDI, for example, I'm very positive,' Schneider said. Schneider welcomed the growing momentum around the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), noting that many previously hesitant Swiss companies are now engaging more actively with India through trade shows and investment forums. 'I think the Swiss are generally a bit reserved and risk-averse, but this agreement is pushing many to take India seriously,' he said, calling the government's new 'Invest in India' desk a potential game-changer for bilateral trade. He also highlighted some challenges, including the need for stronger IP protection, equal opportunities for all players, and harmonization of industrial standards. 'These technical hurdles need to be jointly addressed to fully leverage the momentum TEPA has generated,' he added. Thierry Kenel, CFO of Swatch Group AG, echoed similar optimism about India's long-term potential. The luxury watchmaker, which entered the Indian market 25 years ago, currently offers 16 brands in the country and is planning to expand its footprint gradually. 'India is a very big market. We are continuously evaluating how to grow each brand step by step,' Kenel said. On his meeting with Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Kenel, said it was a very good meeting. CEO of Ammann Group also described his meeting with the Union Minister as 'very good'. 'We have a large manufacturing facility in Gujarat and our mission is twofold. We want to supply the highest quality equipment for long-lasting high-quality roads in the future in India. Also, machines for the exports to all surrounding it is for the Indian market and for all the possible export markets as well.' Talking about the investments in India, he said, there are many positive things now coming at a national level. 'So, super positive.' (ANI)

India supports concluding ambitious and balanced FTA with EU by year end: Jaishankar

Brussels [Belgium], June 10 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has expressed India's support for concluding an 'ambitious and balanced' Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU). During Tuesday's joint press conference with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, Jaishankar called India and the EU 'two important forces of that emerging reality' and stressed the powerful case for forging deeper ties. He said, 'It's a great pleasure to be back in Brussels and join High Representative and Vice President Kaja Kallas for the first strategic dialogue between India and the European Union. I believe we've had a very open and productive meeting today, and it is still continuing.' 'We'll go back to our discussions after this. As you heard from the high representatives, we touched on defence, maritime security, cyber, and space. My meeting was preceded by a call with President von der Leyen this morning. I will also be meeting with my stay, and I hope to interact with President Metsola and members of the European Parliament also during this visit,' he added. He called the European Union and India 'political democracies, market economies, and pluralistic societies'. He stressed how the two sides view the world and its history, geography, development levels, and experience shape their challenges. Jaishankar said, 'My visit to Brussels is taking place three months after that of the EU College of Commissioners to India. Even in that time, it is apparent that the world order was in the midst of a profound change. These trends have intensified in many ways. We have, without doubt, entered an era of multipolarity and strategic autonomy. As two important forces of that emerging reality, there is a powerful case for India and the European Union to forge deeper ties. Working towards that goal requires intensified cooperation in many domains, which is the reason why we are meeting.' 'At its core is a strong political and strategic rapport built on both our countries, our entities, the European Union and India, being political democracies, market economies, and pluralistic societies. Naturally, how we look at the world and its challenges are shaped by history, geography, development levels, and experience. There will be situations when our perspectives may not be entirely identical, that is understandable or what is important is that we expand common ground and understanding and enhance levels of trust,' he added. Jaishankar said he and Kallas will discuss the situation in Europe, the Ukraine conflict, West Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and the Indo-Pacific, amongst other topics, in the coming session of the first India-European Union Strategic Dialogue with Kaja Kallas in Brussels. He said, 'I'm confident that this will be useful and productive. As I said, we have spent the morning discussing damaged defence and security cooperation. Let me add that stabilising and de-risking the international economy is our strategic priority today.' 'This has many dimensions, including building more resilient and reliable supply chains, as well as increasing trust and transparency in digital interactions, creating stronger economic and technology partnerships between major players, which we believe has acquired even greater value.' With that perspective, we support the goal of concluding an ambitious and balanced India-EU FTA by the end of the year. We also see a great benefit in holding an early trade and technology council meeting,' he added. Jaishankar stressed that India attaches considerable importance to its ties with the UK and pointed to the recently concluded FTA with the UK. When asked whether India will be in favour of more EU officials or business leaders participating in the India Global Forum, Jaishankar responded, 'I'm not particularly conversant with that forum, but certainly, for us, one of course we attach, considerable importance to our relationship with the UK. We have actually made some big progress there including finalising our FTA with the UK. We certainly do see that on many issues with which we engage with the European Union, there are also issues which are relevant to our relationship with the UK. So, I think dealing or engaging them both in tandem does make sense to me.' He asserted that terrorism is a 'shared and interconnected challenge' for the international community. He emphasised that it is important to have strong international cooperation on the matter. 'We strongly believe that there must be zero tolerance for terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. In that context, it is also essential that we never yield to nuclear blackmail. This is a shared and interconnected challenge for the global community, and it is imperative that there is strong international cooperation and understanding on the matter,' he said. When asked about the India-Pakistan conflict, Jaishankar responded, 'I'd like you to understand this is not a conflict between two states per se. This is actually a response to the threat and the practice of terrorism. So, I urge you to do it. Don't think of it as India or Pakistan; think of it as India-terroristan. You will then appreciate it.' S Jaishankar met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss efforts to deepen the partnership between India and the EU. Jaishankar welcomed Leyen's strong condemnation of the recent terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam and solidarity in combating terrorism. Sharing details regarding his meeting with Leyen on X, Jaishankar stated, 'Pleased to call on @EU_Commission President @vonderleyen this morning. Welcomed her strong condemnation of terrorist attack in Pahalgam and solidarity in combatting terrorism. Discussed efforts underway to deepen the India-EU partnership. Agreed on the potential benefits of stronger cooperation in trade, technology, connectivity and security for both our regions.' Ursula von der Leyen stated that the 'strategic partnership' between India and the EU is 'getting stronger.' She stressed that India and the EU are working on a Strategic Agenda based on growth, with an ambitious Free Trade Agreement (FTA), tech, innovation, security, and defence. 'Welcome to my friend @DrSJaishankar The EU-India strategic partnership is getting stronger. We're working on a Strategic Agenda based on growth with an ambitious FTA, tech & innovation and security & defence. I look forward to adopting it with @narendramodi at our next Summit,' Leyen posted on X. Jaishankar interacted with members of the Indian community of Belgium and Luxembourg. He met members of the European Parliament - David McAllister, Sandro Gozi and Nikos Papandreou.(ANI)
