India
, which is among the largest troop contributing countries to UN peacekeeping, has made key pledges at a peacekeeping ministerial meeting, including a quick reaction force company and one women-led formed police unit (FPU).
India pledged a Quick Reaction Force company, an armed police or mixed armed police unit, one women-led Formed Police Unit and a counter-improvised explosive devices/ explosive ordnance disposal unit as well as a K-9 unit and a SWAT police unit, the UN Department of Peace Operations said in a post on X. "Thank you India for your support", UN peacekeeping said.
The United Nations peacekeeping ministerial 2025 concluded in Berlin, Germany Wednesday. More than 130 member states and international partners - over a thousand participants in total - came together to reaffirm their support for UN peacekeeping and to announce concrete pledges aimed at enhancing the effectiveness and adaptability of peace operations in the face of evolving global challenges. "In troubled spots around the world, Blue Helmets can mean the difference between life and death. Now more than ever, the world needs the United Nations. And the United Nations needs peacekeeping that is fully equipped for today's realities and tomorrow's challenges," United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in his opening remarks at the ministerial meeting on 'Future of Peacekeeping'.
Guterres said that the international community owes it to peacekeepers - and the populations they protect - to continue strengthening their ability to answer the call to peace and to do so in the face of daunting challenges, such as complex, intertwined and frequently borderless conflicts; growing polarisation and division around the globe; terrorism and transnational crime, which find fertile ground in instability and the ongoing climate crisis that is exacerbating conflict while leaving more of the planet uninhabitable.
Live Events
Guterres underscored the need for shaping peacekeeping operations that are fit for the future and making peacekeeping operations more adaptable and flexible.
Hosted by the Government of Germany, the two-day high-level meeting marked a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to strengthen Member State support and help shape the future of UN peacekeeping. The Ministerial focused on the Future of Peacekeeping, reflecting the need for innovative approaches to address complex conflicts, leverage emerging technologies, and address threats such as mis- and disinformation, a press release by UN Peacekeeping said.
Guterres welcomed member states' political statements of support for peacekeeping as well as their pledges of military and police capabilities, new partnerships and technological support. "This meeting is also about something more fundamental: the future of peacekeeping itself," Guterres added.
German minister of Foreign Affairs Johann Wadephul said in the statement released by UN Peacekeeping that "in an interconnected world, no nation can achieve peace and security for its citizens on its own.
"We all agree that setting up strong and effective peacekeeping missions is our joint responsibility. We want to tailor future missions to the exact needs of the host countries and increase their acceptance and effectiveness. This is the way forward in a world in which peacekeeping is more important now than ever before, but where the challenges are greater than at any time in the past," he said.
Key outcomes of the peacekeeping ministerial included 53 member states pledging uniformed capabilities, including 88 military and police units, as well as various critical capabilities, airlift, individual experts, staff officers and individual police officers.
Fifty-nine member states pledged specialised training on critical issues such as peacekeeping-intelligence, protection of civilians, gender and the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse; 18 member states made pledges related to technological advancements and data-driven approaches to improve mission effectiveness.
Thirty-eight member states made pledges to further implement the Women, Peace and Security agenda, including gender-responsive peacekeeping and women in peacekeeping. Sixteen member states pledged capabilities and projects to enhance the safety and security of peacekeepers. Eleven member states made pledges related to the conduct and accountability of peacekeepers and UN peacekeeping's fight against sexual exploitation and abuse.
"This response includes targeted contributions to the Trust Fund for victims and eight member states made pledges to support the UN's strategic communications efforts and contribute resources to strengthen information integrity.
India ranks among the top contributors to UN peacekeeping missions with 5,384 personnel, including 153 women, across 10 missions as of September 2024. Nearly 180 Indian peacekeepers have been killed in action, the highest number by far from any troop-contributing country. India deployed the first all-female FPU to Liberia in 2007.
The Berlin Ministerial is part of a series of high-level meetings aimed at galvanising political support and generating tangible commitments to improve UN peacekeeping. It follows previous Ministerial meetings held in Accra (2023), Seoul (2021), New York (2019) Vancouver (2017) and London (2016). The 2025 Ministerial also coincides with the 80th anniversary of the UN and the 10-year anniversary of the Leaders' Summit on Peacekeeping.

'Kashmir Will Now Be...': Khawaja Asif's BIG Declaration On Simla Agreement Amid India-Pak Tensions

/ Jun 05, 2025, 10:08PM IST Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has declared the 1972 Simla Agreement 'a dead document,' stating that Pakistan has returned to the 1948 UN position, calling the LoC a ceasefire line. He claimed the bilateral framework with India has collapsed and hinted at a shift toward international mediation. Asif also questioned the status of the Indus Waters Treaty and issued a nuclear warning, saying Pakistan is on high alert. In an earlier TV interview, he had admitted Pakistan's past role in backing terror groups during the Cold War and post-9/11 era, calling it a mistake that damaged the country and its global reputation.#pakistandiplomacy #khawajaasif #simlaagreement #kashmirconflict #loc #unresolution #nuclearalert #pakistannuclear #terrorism #terrorconfession #yaldaakim #indiapakistan #geopolitics #foreignpolicy #southasia #internationalrelations #defencepolicy #bilateralism #multilateralism #pojk #pok #pakistan #india #indiapakistantensions #news #usa #viral #trending #toi #toibharat

"India today speaks with strength, not submission": Assam CM hits back at Rahul Gandhi's "surrender" remarks on PM

New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): Launching a scathing attack on Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his 'surrender' remarks on PM Modi, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday slammed Congress, accusing it of surrendering India's pride, security, and sovereignty over historical dates from losing PoK and Aksai Chin. In a long post on X, CM Himanta, citing Prime Minister Modi's strong response through Uri, Balakot, and Galwan, said that 'India today speaks with strength, not submission.' 'Rahul Gandhi has the audacity to mock the Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi as 'Surrender Modi' despite the massive success of #OperationSindoor. Let's jog his memory as to which party and family has surrendered India's interest and territory, and backstabbed the people with their treachery,' he said. 'It was Pandit Nehru who rushed to the United Nations during the Kashmir conflict, halted our advancing Army, and gifted away what we now call Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. A military victory sacrificed at the altar of global appeasement,' CM Sarma said. Attacking the Congress over Aksai Chin, the Assam CM said that 38,000 sq km of Indian territory was handed over without firing a bullet. 'Nehru's only response when China threatened Assam? Was this statesmanship or surrender @RahulGandhi? Assam was nearly cut off. The entire Northeast was abandoned to fate,' Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Further, CM Sarma said that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had 93,000 Pakistani soldiers in custody during the 1971 war, the moment, he said, could be used to take back PoK. 'Indira Gandhi had 93,000 Pakistani soldiers in custody after the 1971 war. But instead of using that leverage to recover PoK or secure reparations, she released them--empty-handed. A historic military win squandered at the negotiating table,' he said. 'Despite full readiness, the Congress government deferred India's nuclear tests under American pressure. It took Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1998 to finally make India a declared nuclear power. After 166 innocent Indians were butchered by Pakistan-backed terrorists in 26/11, what did Congress do? No response. No justice. No accountability. Just silence,' the Assam CM said. Sharpening his attacks further, CM Himanta Sarma claimed that the Congress didn't just surrender land, it surrendered India's pride, security, and sovereignty. 'Even after victory, they couldn't secure 9 Indian POWs from Pakistan. Even after the liberation of Bangladesh, they left Assam vulnerable, its fate hanging by the 'chicken neck' corridor. Even in 1962, Nehru was ready to abandon Assam to the Chinese,' he said. Praising Prime Minister Modi's leadership, the Assam CM said that those 'dark days are over'. 'Under PM Narendra Modi, India doesn't plead. We act in Uri, we strike in Balakot, we stand our ground in Galwan, and we lead globally. From military to diplomacy, from economy to national security, India today speaks with strength, not submission. Congress must stop projecting its own history of cowardice onto the shoulders of a leader who refuses to bend. India remembers. India has risen. And India won't surrender again,' CM Himanta said on X. This comes after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the BJP-led government on Tuesday over allegations of mediation by the United States in Operation Sindoor. He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi 'followed' Donald Trump following a call by the US leader and that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi did not budge to the US in the 1971 war. Addressing a convention of Congress workers in Bhopal, LoP Rahul Gandhi said, 'Now, I understand RSS-BJP well. They run away out of fear if slight pressure is put on them. When Trump called Modiji- Modiji kya kar rahe ho, Narender-Surrender and with 'ji hazooor', Narenderji followed Trump. In the 1971 war, the Seventh Fleet (which came from the US), India Gandhi said I will do whatever I have to do. This is the difference. This is their character; all of them are like this. Since the Independence movement, they have had the habit of writing letters of surrender.' (ANI)

UN food agency appeals for $46 million to help 2 million Haitians facing severe hunger

The appeal was issued by Lola Castro, the World Food Program's regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean, who recently returned from Haiti, where escalating gang violence has displaced well over 1 million people and left half the population - 5.7 million people - in urgent need of food. Two million of them are in the two worst categories in the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, the leading international authority on hunger crises, and 8,500 are in the worst Phase 5 category, she said. That means at least one in five people or households severely lack food and face starvation and destitution. Haiti is one of only five countries in the world that have people in the Phase 5 category of catastrophic hunger, Castro said, "and it is really dramatic to have this in the Western Hemisphere." Gangs have grown in power since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021 and are now estimated to control 85 per cent of the capital and are moving into surrounding areas. Haiti has not had a president since the assassination, and the top UN official in the country said in April the country could face "total chaos" without funding to confront the gangs.. A UN-backed mission led by Kenyan police arrived in Haiti last year to help quell gang violence, but the mission remains understaffed and underfunded, with only about 40 per cent of the 2,500 personnel originally envisioned. The WFP, the world's largest humanitarian organization, is among the UN agencies facing funding cuts, mainly from the United States, which provided nearly half of its funding in 2024. Castro said WFP reached over 1.3 million people this year until March using carryover funds from last year. But the agency is facing a dramatic situation now with food stocks only until July to assist with emergencies, new displacements or hurricanes, she said. In the past four years, Castro said WFP always had stocks to help between 250,000 and 500,000 people with any emergency. "This year, we start the hurricane season with an empty warehouse where we have no stocks for assisting any emergency, or we have no cash neither to go and buy (food) locally if it was possible in some areas, or to do a rapid humanitarian response," Castro said. "We are very concerned that a single storm can put hundreds of thousands of people in Haiti again into humanitarian catastrophe and hunger." WFP normally provides a meal every day for around 500,000 school children, but that number will be cut in half without additional resources, she told a video press conference on Tuesday. With $46 million, she said, WFP will be able to help the 2 million Haitians in most need of food, keep providing school meals for half a million children, and provide social protection for very vulnerable people in camps for the displaced. Haiti must not be forgotten as the world deals with other crises, Castro said, urging donors to be generous. "We really need to stop this and to hold the line on hunger," she said. "We continue calling the humanitarian community to provide support." With $46 million, she said, WFP will be able to help the 2 million Haitians in the two worst IPC categories, keep providing school meals for half a million children, and provide social protection for very vulnerable people in camps for the displaced.
