Team GB sprint star admits European hat-trick bid is mission 'to redeem myself'

Daily Mirror12 hours ago

The sprinter had a disappointing 2024 summer ruined by injury, missing out on defending his 200m crown before failing to make the 100m final at the Olympics, but is now on the comeback trail
Zharnel Hughes has a European hat-trick on his mind as he begins his road to redemption. The 29-year-old missed out on defending his 200m continental crown at Rome 2024, when he was forced to withdraw from the competition due to a hamstring injury, and failed to make the 100m final at the Olympics which followed.
Hughes then pulled out of the 200m in Paris through injury, with his hamstring again the issue, leaving him determined to put the record straight heading into this summer and beyond.

"It was very difficult for me." he said. "The injury happened the week before the European Championships and I was looking forward to going back and regaining that title, it was on my mind.

"I really wanted to go and give the fans a performance they would have liked but sadly injuries do happen in this sport. Hopefully next season I can keep myself healthy, go in there and redeem myself.
"I want to go back and get those titles. I'm definitely looking at it as a chance for redemption."
Hughes already has a glittering European CV to his name, with individual 100m and 4x100m relay golds from Berlin 2018.
Four years later, in Munich, the sprinter lost his title as the fastest man in Europe, narrowly pipped to gold by Italy's Marcell Jacobs in the 100m.
Hughes bounced back to take the 200m title and add a second 4x100m relay gold to his tally but he now wants to go one-step further and is targeting a golden hat-trick on home soil.
"I'm looking forward to getting all three boxes ticked this time, that is my aim,' he said. "My mind is set on it and I'm looking forward to executing it. It would be an amazing accomplishment because I've won all the medals before - but I want to cement the hat-trick."

The cherry on top of the cake for the sprinter would be lowering his own 100m and 200m British records in front of a packed Alexander Stadium.
"If I can run super fast and break a British record in front of a home crowd, that would be amazing," he added. "I definitely want to lower the record, it's in my plans. In Birmingham 2026, I just want to do a sub-10 performance for the fans and get the win."

A quarter of a million tickets for the event will go on sale in September, and prices starting from just £10 for adults. Organisers have ambitions to create one of the most talked about European athletics events in history and Hughes wants to put on a show for those who snap up tickets.
"I love the fact that the ticket prices are so flexible because it increases the volume of people in the stadium," he said. "I feel like this is a whole new era to inspire upcoming athletes. The support has always been good in the past but its getting better every time we compete.
"I'm looking forward to going out there and doing that again. They're looking up to us and I'm all about leaving that positive impact on the youth."

Olympic bronze medallist Lewis Richardson wins pro debut… and can now enjoy his postponed birthday curry

LEWIS RICHARDSON secured a debut windaloo weekend. The Colchester lad turned 28 on Wednesday but could not celebrate with his professional boxing bow slated for last night in Ipswich. 3 Instead the southpaw booked a local curry restaurant for 15 loved ones and just had to deliver the goods in the ring. And the 2024 Olympic bronze winner did the job, beating tough Estonian Dmitri Protkunas 60-54 on points. The Brit ace had a loud crowd make the 29-minute drive over from his doorstep. And they cheered his slick southpaw work, rapid fists and the willingness to drop his hands to his waist, in an effort to get the cautious journeyman to engage. The Essex ace used to sell Pukka Pies at the Portman Road stadium a decade ago, while doing his school exams. And he returned to his old stomping ground for six one-sided rounds where he showed plenty of his amateur skill and future potential. Richardson had to bin his birthday plans to make the middleweight limit for this weekend. The spicy celebrations have been pushed back but the silky southpaw plans to put in a curry order worthy of a Gavin and Stacey special, to make up for the diet. 'The party is pushed back to Sunday. 'I have a curry house booked in Colchester for 15 of us and my mouth is watering just talking to you about it now. 'I can't even think about my order now. I've played with Zidane and Henry but facing Celtic in the Champions League was my most magical career memory

Former France and Lyon hero Gregory Coupet will never forget his visit to Glasgow's East End 22 years ago Lyon legend Gregory Coupet enjoyed a stellar career that saw him win seven Ligue 1 titles and represent his country at the European Championships in 2008. But the 52-year-old is in no doubt about the best experience he ever experienced on the pitch during his 28 years as a professional. ‌ The Frenchman was in his pomp when Lyon travelled to Celtic Park for a Champions League group stage clash in September 2003. ‌ The Ligue 1 powerhouses went into tie off the back of consecutive league titles but were blown away by the Hoops, with goals in either half from Liam Miller and Chris Sutton handing Martin O'Neill's side an impressive 2-0 win, despite Coupet saving a penalty from Alan Thompson. Coupet's team would get their own back on Celtic three months later, with midfield maestro Juninho netting a late penalty in a 3-2 victory to deny the visitors a place in the knockout rounds of the Champions League. And while the former stopper - who won 32 caps for his country and also turned out for Saint Etienne, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain - played in many iconic stadiums around the continent during his illustrious career between the sticks, he says that 'magical' night at Parkhead trumps the lot. Coupet puts the atmosphere generated at Celtic Park ahead of the cauldron of noise that can be heard in Fenerbahce's Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium. Speaking to L'Equipe, he said: "I put Celtic above all because there is a cathedral effect, magnificent chants, no animosity. It's magical." Coupet isn't the only former Ligue 1 star to have some warm words for the famous old ground. ‌ Ex Barcelona, Manchester United and PSG goal machine Zlatan Ibrahimovic described his experience of walking out in Glasgow's East End back in 2001 when he came off the bench for Ajax in a Champions League tie. Reflecting on his career, he said: "I have played in the biggest games of world football. ‌ "But I have never experienced an atmosphere like I did at Celtic Park."
