All-party delegation concludes Russia visit after discussing India's anti-terrorism measures

Time of India24-05-2025

An Indian all-party parliamentary delegation on Saturday concluded its visit to the Russian capital after holding wide-ranging discussions on
counter-terrorism
combat and briefing the "tried and tested" friend Russia on
Operation Sindoor
. Earlier on Friday, Russia had reiterated its decisive commitment to "an uncompromising joint fight" with New Delhi against all forms of terrorism.
The delegation led by DMK MP
Kanimozhi Karunanidhi
is in Russia to sensitize the diplomatic leadership about terror emanating from Pakistan, a month after the
Pahalgam attack
that left 26 people dead.
Addressing a press conference at the end of the visit, the delegation described Russia as a "close and tried and tested" friend. "We naturally seek an understanding that Russia is by our side in this time of difficulty. It is better that people are aware of our suffering from state-sponsored terrorism from Pakistan," the delegation members said while answering a media question.

In her introductory remarks at the press conference, Kanimozhi described the Russia visit as a "great opportunity to explain our stand" and said, "Pakistan chooses to protect the terrorists, they go ahead and spread false propaganda. We had only targeted terror hubs. India is very clear, we would not come to the table for peace talks when Pakistan continues attacking us."
The Indian delegation members also offered tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Embassy of India in Moscow before concluding their visit and left for Slovenia.

On Friday, a Foreign Ministry statement issued after Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko met with the visiting parliamentary delegation expressed readiness to increase close cooperation on the issue at regional and global venues.
"A decisive commitment to an uncompromising joint fight against all forms of terrorism was confirmed. Readiness was expressed to increase close cooperation on these issues at regional and global venues, primarily in the UN, BRICS and SCO," the Foreign Ministry statement said.
Rudenko also expressed hope for a speedy de-escalation of tensions in relations between New Delhi and Islamabad through peaceful diplomatic means.
Before meeting Rudenko, the Indian Parliamentarians also had "a fruitful interaction" with former prime minister of the Russian Federation Mikhail Fradkov, who heads the Russian Institute of Strategic Studies (RISS) and had a detailed exchange of views at a round-table meeting with all-party members of the Russian Federation Assembly (Parliament) led by the Duma (lower house) International Affairs Committee chair Leonid Slutsky of Liberal-Democratic Party.
The delegation also met with First Deputy Chair of the Committee on International Affairs Andrey Denisov and other senators in the Federation Council of the Russian Federation.
The Indian delegation is also scheduled to visit Greece, Latvia and Spain as part of the government of India's diplomatic outreach post- Pahalgam when Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared a "new normal" when New Delhi will consider any act of cross border terrorism as an act of war against India.
The delegation is one of the seven multi-party delegations to 33 global capitals to reach out to the international community on Pakistan's designs and India's response to terror, especially in view of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people.
The other members of the delegation are Rajiv Rai of SP, Mian Altaf Ahmad of NC, Capt Brijesh Chowta of BJP, Prem Chand Gupta of RJD, Ashok Kumar Mittal of AAP and Ambassadors Manjeev S Puri and Jawed Ashraf.
Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives.
India carried out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7, following which Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9 and 10. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions.
The on-ground hostilities ended with an understanding on stopping the military actions following talks between the directors general of military operations of both sides on May 10.

Takht Patna Sahib gives more days to Sukhbir, but asserts supremacy

Jalandhar: Takht Patna Sahib high priests have given 20 more days to Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal to appear before them, following a request by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Harjinder Singh Dhami. On May 21, the Patna Sahib clergy had declared Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj and Takht Damdama Sahib jathedar Tek Singh Dhanaula 'tankhaiya', and asked Sukhbir to appear before it. It also held that from now on, no directive from Akal Takht or from any other takht would be implemented at Takht Patna Sahib. The directive issued by the five granthis (priests) of Takht Patna Sahib on Saturday mentioned that on May 21, Sukhbir was asked to appear before the 'panj piaras' in 10 days and then a 10-day extension was given to him on June 1, but it ended on June 10. "Now, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami called up to request more time. After discussions, the Panj Piare Singh Sahiban (five priests) decided to give Sukhbir Singh Badal another 20 days. In case of violation of this edict, strict action would be taken according to panthic tradition," said the directive. The signatories to the directive include Takht Patna Sahib jathedar and head granthi Baldev Singh and additional head granthi Gurdial Singh, who were barred by Akal Takht on May 21 from 'panthic services' on the grounds that an earlier directive by Akal Takht on Dec 6, 2022, about them was not complied with. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? However, what can lead to even bigger and long-term ramifications is the part of their May 21 directive, which appears to challenge the supremacy of Akal Takht, clearly asserting that from now on, no directive from Akal Takht or from any other takht would be implemented at Takht Patna Sahib nor complied with. They emphasised that this part of the directive should be strictly complied with. This part of the directive is reminiscent of an edict issued on Jan 26, 2008, by the then Patna Sahib jathedar, Iqbal Singh, challenging the supremacy of Akal Takht (a concept widely accepted by Sikhs) and claiming that Takht Patna Sahib was supreme. Damdami Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma, while announcing opposition to acting Akal Takht jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj's address at Akal Takht on June 6 to mark an event to observe Operation Bluestar, cited the Takht Patna Sahib clergy's move to declare him 'tankhaiya'. Giani Baldev Singh and Gurdial Singh were invited and given prominence at the function held at the taksal's headquarters at Mehta Chowk on June 6. Both were made to stand alongside Darbar Sahib head granthi Giani Raghbir Singh when he addressed the congregation. Two others who were made to flank him included Darbar Sahib granthi Palwinderpal Singh, a former student of taksal, and a representative from Takht Hazur Sahib. Baldev Singh also addressed the congregation. The May 21 directive issued by Akal Takht also explicitly mentioned that Baldev Singh was not fit to render services at Takht Patna Sahib or in the panthic sphere. Both priests were asked to appear at Akal Takht and present their side. They were barred from rendering 'panthic services' until then. The Akal Takht directive also directed Takht Patna Sahib management committee to appear at Akal Takht and present its side. However, when the Takht Patna Sahib clergy hit back on May 21, it also 'directed' the management committee there to not appear before Akal Takht.

West Asia conflict, oil spike put investors on edge

New York: Israel and Iran launched fresh attacks on each other into Sunday, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying Israeli strikes would intensify as Tehran called off nuclear talks that Washington had held out as the only way to halt the bombing. Oil prices rose 7% on Friday, as Israel and Iran traded strikes, and investors will be watching closely to see how the price reacts when markets open later. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If You Eat Ginger Everyday for 1 Month This is What Happens Tips and Tricks Undo "So far we are at a stage of 'controlled confrontation'", said Lombard Odier's chief economist Samy Chaar, where it is too soon to call for real and persistent economic damage despite high risk. On Saturday, Israel appeared to have also hit Iran's oil and gas industry for the first time, with Iranian state media reporting a blaze at a gas field. Israel's air offensive against Iran that began early on Friday, killing commanders and scientists and bombing nuclear sites in a stated bid to stop Tehran building an atomic weapon, knocked risky assets, including stocks, on Friday. It also lifted oil prices and prompted a rush into gold and the dollar, which resumed its role as a safe-haven asset for the first time in months. Oil prices at close to six-month highs could pose a risk to the inflation outlook . Live Events

‘Delhi is a true picture of unity in diversity… a melting pot'

In the last three-and-a-half years she has spent in Delhi, the city has become like a second home for Ina Hagniningtyas Krisnamurthi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to India. Not just food, she loves the diversity of the city, but also its food. In her career spanning nearly two decades, she has held various diplomatic positions and has held various other government posts. She is an MA in International Studies from Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. She speaks to The Indian Express as part of a series of interviews with Ambassadors about Delhi — a city she admires. Excerpts: One place in the city that you like visiting often. Delhi for me is like a second home. It's not easy for me to pinpoint one, but I often visit Nehru Park or Lodhi Garden… very friendly and green. What has stood out in Delhi during your stay? In Indonesia, we have this principle of 'Bhinekka Tunggal Ika', which loosely translates in English to 'unity in diversity'. I think Delhi is truly a picture of unity in diversity. When I arrived here in 2022, there were 152 diplomatic missions. Now, the number has gone up to 180. The city is a melting pot of diplomats, especially from many faraway countries. I was posted in New York before…there are 193 missions there. Secondly, when you talk about food, you can find cuisines from all Indian states. Unfortunately, Odisha Bhawan is now undergoing a renovation, but that is one of the places that I frequent because I love Odisha's food. It almost has a Southeast Asian flavour. Thirdly, even as Delhi is not my favourite Indian city, it has a character unlike many others. The past and the future come together. It's so colouful. You can say that you can understand Delhi, but you cannot, because every corner of the city brings out a different side. My favourite place is Chandigarh, and another city for me that I fell in love with right away is Visakhapatnam. Memories or encounters in the city that you'll never forget? One was the G20 Summit. The lockdown during the G20 Summit for three days…it was all so beautiful, my God! It was very romantic. I cannot explain in words. Second, when Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto came here as the Chief Guest of the Republic Day parade this year. In October, when the decision came to invite my president, I was doubtful that we could do it. India made it happen because you're so unbelievably good at extending your friendship. Favourite food in the city? The South Indian food in Malcha Marg, and I also love fried fish. And also, Dhaba in Claridges, because I love the butter chicken, and also the garlic naan. But the dal, I think, Bukhara is the best…by far. The dal is unbelievable. I just buy the dal and eat it with naan or roti. That's it. I can eat that forever. If you have to introduce Delhi back home, what will you tell them? First, unity in diversity. Second, the warmth of the people. Third, even Delhiites can't fully know the city… because if you go to Old Delhi, every nook and corner is different…Every time I go there, I go okay, how come this is here? I did not see it before.
