Lena Dunham gave unconventional dog her big break

Lena Dunham has revealed how she took a chance on an 11-year-old Chinese Crested Dog and helped to make her the star of her new show.
The Girls creator has written a new Netflix series Too Much, based on her own move to London, and cast unconventional dog Mia in the role of pet Astrid - making her a canine star after years of being overlooked.
Dunham appeared on The One Show on Tuesday, 24 June with the cast of her rom com TV show, Hacks' Megan Stalter and The White Lotus' Will Sharpe. They explained how Mia was the true star of the show after dog-lover Dunham gave her her big break.
Stalter stars as Jessica in Too Much, a character based on Dunham herself, an "intense" American woman in her 30s trying to make friends with British people when she moves to London.
Stalter joked how she had been upstaged by Mia the dog on the red carpet at a preview screening of the show in London on Monday night. She told hosts Roman Kemp and Alex Jones: "I will say, this is Miss Mia who plays Astrid, and I will say that, I'm not allowed to cuss, but was p-d off at her because she was upstaging me with her dress. I could barely hold her because the dress was taking up my dress, but with that being said, she felt very at home on the red carpet."
Dunham added: "The other thing I'll say is that she is 11. And she had never gotten a modeling job, and because people didn't think she fit the classic mold - many people's story. And then I saw her and I said, 'This is exactly who I've been looking for.' And now she's been on the red carpet; she's been in Vogue; she's about to be in a major music video; and she's starring in the show. So I think she's maybe got the biggest narrative of any of us here."
Dunham moved to the UK in 2019 to direct an episode of BBC drama Industry and ended up falling in love with British culture, as well as English-Peruvian musician Luis Felber.
Stalter revealed Dunham and English actor Sharpe had tried to introduce her to certain aspects of British culture while making the show - and she had not been a fan of some of the food she had tried.
She confessed: "[Kendall mint cake.] I don't like it. But I like the other one. Jaffa cake."

Retired footballer and TV star Ian Wright was also a guest on the show and Dunham revealed she is a big fan of his.
She said: "I am a big Ian Wright fan of my husband's going to have a freak out that I'm beside him! But I am working with Natalie Portman on a film we're about to start shooting, and she's one of the owners of Angel FC. And so I'm really excited to hopefully get to go to a game with her, and she's been sharing her passion from the rooftop. So I've put in a request for a jacket. We'll see if it arrives."
The One Show airs on BBC One at 7pm on weekdays.
Too Much lunches on Netflix at Thursday, 10 July.

Pedro Pascal Called Out J.K. Rowling's ‘Heinous Loser Behavior' Over Anti-Trans Law Because ‘Bullies Make Me F—ing Sick': ‘I Want to Protect the People I Love'

Pedro Pascal said in a new Vanity Fair cover story that 'bullies make me fucking sick' when the topic of J.K. Rowling was brought up. The 'Harry Potter' author has regularly courted controversy since 2020 for sharing anti-trans views on social media. Pascal's younger sister, Lux, came out as transgender in 2021. The actor made headlines in late April for slamming Rowling's 'heinous loser behavior' after she celebrated the U.K. Supreme Court's anti-trans ruling that transgender women are not legally considered women and transgender men are not legally considered men. Pascal's other sister, Javiera, defended her brother's comment, telling Vanity Fair: 'But it is heinous loser behavior. And he said that as the older brother to someone saying that our little sister doesn't exist.' More from Variety J.K. Rowling Raves About HBO's 'Harry Potter' Series After Working 'Closely' With the Writers: 'I've Read the First Two Episodes. They Are So, So Good' From 'Andor' and 'The Studio' to Selena Gomez and Pedro Pascal, 14 Possible Emmy Records and Milestones in Sight Emmys Acting Contenders: From Pedro Pascal and Diego Luna to Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, Who Was Officially Submitted As the comment went viral across social media, Pascal said he briefly felt like 'that kid that got sent to the principal's office a lot for behavioral issues in public schools feeling scared and thinking, 'What'd I do?'' But he knew he could not stay silent as Rowling celebrated the anti-trans ruling, which she did by posting a victory photo of herself drinking with the caption: 'I love it when a plan comes together.' 'The one thing that I would say I agonized over a little bit was just, 'Am I helping? Am I fucking helping?'' Pascal told the magazine. 'It's a situation that deserves the utmost elegance so that something can actually happen, and people will actually be protected. Listen, I want to protect the people I love. But it goes beyond that. Bullies make me fucking sick.' In the aftermath of Pascal's comment, some of Rowling's defenders started sharing a viral clip of the actor taking his 'Fantastic Four' co-star Venessa Kirby's hand at Comic-Con in order to somehow prove Pascal is presumptuous with women. But Kirby isn't having that. 'What happened is we were both incredibly nervous going out in front of thousands of people who love this comic,' Kirby told Vanity Fair. 'He wanted me to know that we were in this together, and I found it a lovely gesture and was very glad to squeeze his hand back.' Pascal was far from the only prominent celebrity to condemn the U.K. Supreme Court's decision. Actors such as his 'The Last of Us' co-star Bella Ramsey and 'Bridgerton' favorite Nicola Coughlan all signed an open letter opposing the anti-trans ruling. 'We the undersigned film and television professionals stand in solidarity with the trans, non-binary and intersex communities who have been impacted by the Supreme Court ruling on April 17,' the letter read. 'The Supreme Court's ruling that, under the Equality Act, 'woman' is defined by biological sex, states that 'the concept of sex is binary, a person is either a woman or a man'. We believe the ruling undermines the lived reality and threatens the safety of trans, non-binary and intersex people living in the UK.' Another signee of the letter was 'I May Destroy You' Emmy nominee Paapa Essiedu, who just so happens to be taking on the role of Severus Snape in HBO's 'Harry Potter' television series. Rowling is closely involved in the development of the show but wrote on X that she has no problem with cast members who think differently than her. 'I don't have the power to sack an actor from the series and I wouldn't exercise it if I did,' Rowling wrote on X while sharing an article about Essiedu signing the letter. 'I don't believe in taking away people's jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine.' Patrick Walden, Babyshambles guitarist, dies aged 46

Patrick Walden, the guitarist best known for his work alongside Pete Doherty in the British post-punk band Babyshambles, has died aged 46. The news was announced through the group's social media. No cause of death was revealed. Doherty had formed the band after splitting from the Libertines in the early 2000s, his substance abuse a key driver in his departure. When assembling a new outfit, he confided in Walden as lead guitarist, who could be found with anything from a Gretsch semi-hollow to a Tele or a Jazzmaster draped over his shoulder. Proving to be more than just Doherty's foil, Walden co-wrote a host of songs featured on their 2005 debut album, Down in Albion. That included co-writing its big hit, Fuck Forever, a track driven by a chimey, edge-of-breakup guitar tone. It's one with both charm and attitude in equal measure, something that typified the band's – and Walde's – signature sound. Walden would leave the band in December 2005 in light of substance issues, and an assault case involving his then-girlfriend, although all charges were later dropped. Michael Whitnall took his place for 2007's Shotter's Nation. However, Walden linked up with two ex-bandmates, Drew McConnell and Seb Rochford, for a show in July 2007, and joined the Babyshambles at a gig at Halo in Battersea two years later. 'It is with deep regret and sadness that we share the news of Patrick Walden's death,' Babyshambles say in an official statement. 'We feel very fortunate to have known, loved, and worked with him, and we kindly ask for respect and privacy during these difficult times.' One commenter on the band's Instagram post, currently the only one visible on its timeline, compared his guitar playing to the Stooges maestro Scott Asheton, calling him 'the best guitarist of my generation.' As per an interview with blogger Olivia Collins for The Musical Acid Test in November 2024, Walden says he was pursuing a degree in jazz composition, citing the genre as his first love. His first job was working at Camden Jazz Café at 18, rubbing shoulders with some prestigious names, including Herbie Hancock and Ravi Coltrane. But it was in the indie rock world with which he is more commonly associated. 'I realised when I stopped drinking, the hunger for music came back and I wanted to do something new and different with that kind of music,' he had said. 'The way I played all the other music was very instinctive, I would just do it, by playing in bands, but this takes training, it's a lot of hard work, and I think it's a responsibility as well.'
