Brisbane trainer Rob Heathcote knows he'll be up against some 'serious horses' in Sunday's $1m The Archer slot race in Rockhampton but that won't stop him from daring to dream.
The Heathcote-trained gelding Cosmo Centaurus will run in the slot for Karla and Peter McPhail in the 1300m race, which costs $70,000 per entry and offers $565,000 to the winner.
Ironically it was Heathcote's horse Emerald Kingdom which edged out Apache Chase in the inaugural edition of The Archer in 2022 and guess who held the slot for the runner-up?
Yep, it was Karla and Peter McPhail.
Both those geldings ended up running in the Stradbroke Handicap that year but failed to make an impression in the 1400m major won by Alligator Blood, who retired last month as a seven-time Group 1 champion.
'I got a bit of a surprise when I did get the phone for Cosmo Centaurus but I'm not surprised when you analyse his runs, which have been a lot better than they look on paper,' Heathcote said.
'He's the only three-year-old in the race but I'm a realist. He's coming up against Iowna Merc, Sandpaper and Transatlantic, these are serious race horses.'
Cosmo Centaurus won his first two races but then finished ninth in his next two outings before a creditable fourth at his most recent start, the $160,000 Listed Daybreak Lover (1400m) won by Tony Gollan 's rising star Boomtown Boss at Eagle Farm on April 19.

'He hasn't had a lot of luck in his last couple of races and I'm having a horror run with barriers lately,' Heathcote said.
'I mean it makes all the difference. It's just getting to the stage where I'm exasperated with the continual run of bad barriers.'
Transatlantic ($3.60), Iowna Merc ($4.20) and Sandpaper ($6.50) lead Ladbrokes' market for The Archer, with Cosmo Centaurus currently paying $26.
Heathcote will be hoping for better luck for the barrier draw on Wednesday night and in a 'big plus', six-time Group 1 winner Chad Schofield will fly up from Sydney to ride the three-year-old gelding.
'I think the 1300m on that big track can suit him but the reality is that I have to temper my enthusiasm because he hasn't proven himself against this type of quality,' Heathcote said.
'There's no doubt it's going to be tough but he's a horse who I feel has a very bright future.'

Charlotte Littlefield eyes Royal Ascot-Goodwood with She's Bulletproof
Charlotte Littlefield has an early and light spring set for sprinter She's Bulletproof, as part of a long-range Royal Ascot-Glorious Goodwood homecoming dream. The Group 1-placed She's Bulletproof is well into pre-training now after a welcomed two-month break. Pakenham-based UK expat Littlefield, who grew up in Goodwood, has Australian Group 1 aspirations first ideally for Oakleigh Plate runner-up She's Bulletproof. 'We'll be certainly targeting the early part of spring with her,' Littlefield said. 'Whether we go to Sydney or stay in Melbourne and aim at something like the Moir Stakes. 'There is a long-term goal to get She's Bulletproof to Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood … it would be a dream come true to get a horse back to my home country.' • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Littlefield would be a major drawcard for UK racing authorities as an expat returning home with an Australian sprinter. She's Bulletproof has won four of 13 starts and placed on seven occasions. The rising five-year-old broke out last campaign with a Group 3 win and slashing Group 1 second in the Oakleigh Plate. A wet track thwarted Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) ambitions although She's Bulletproof, placed fifth, had by them come to the end of her campaign. • 'He was a legend': Bedggood, Bates dedicate Sandown win to Laing 'We'd ideally like to get a Group 1 win with her before we travel,' Littlefield said. 'But if you look at what Asfoora has done, she hadn't won a Group 1 when she went over (to Royal Ascot last year, so it's definitely a possibility. 'It depends how the sprinting ranks are going over there … we'd obviously want to go over there knowing we've got a horse rated suitably to win a race.' The Henry Dwyer-trained Asfoora last year became the eighth Australian-trainer horse to win at Royal Ascot with a brilliant performance in the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes. Asfoora is $5 equal favourite to defend her King Charles III crown on June 18. • Big Bets review: War Machine delivers for punters Littlefield's 'pipeline dream' 2026 UK odyssey would also include the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes at Goodwood. Asfoora placed second in the 1005m sprint last year. 'I went there (Goodwood twilight races) with my mum and stepdad growing up,' Littlefield said. 'Had my one pound on each race and to be honest I had no … care in the world if we won. 'It was so fun to see the horses and jump up and down and scream. That was my little thing as a kid, I used to love going to Goodwood. 'To win at Goodwood, in a Group race, would mean more than a Group 1.' The five-day Royal Ascot Carnival starts on Tuesday night (AEST). Melbourne Cup-winning jockeys James McDonald and Mark Zahra will ride at Royal Ascot while champion trainer Ciaron Maher has new acquisition, Yulong-bought Carl Spackler – a multiple Grade 1 American star with Cox Plate ambitions – in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes on Tuesday. Ray Thomas' Blackbook: Five to follow from Rosehill on Saturday
Ray Thomas reveals his horses to follow from Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, while Sky Thoroughbred Central's Ron Dufficy names his highlights in his Rosehill snapshot. • â– â– â– â– â– FIVE TO FOLLOW CODETTA (race 5) was coming off a luckless first-up second and was confidently backed into $2.70 favouritism but nothing went right for her when third to the smart filly Winning Proposal. Codetta was trapped three-wide without cover for most of the race but still had the temerity to loom up halfway down the straight as a winning threat. She's racing well and her turn is coming. ðŸ' Winning Proposal with a late effort to get the win along the inside at Rosehill! @BBakerRacing | @AnnaRoper_ — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 14, 2025 SACRED ROCKS (race 10) made a real statement at her Sydney debut. She had won two of her four starts in Victoria, finishing second in the other two, before trainer Ciaron Maher switched states. Sacred Rocks settled back in the field from a wide barrier, didn't have the smoothest of passages but her finishing acceleration was very impressive. She's talented and can keep winning. Sacred Rocks storms home on the outside to win the last at Rosehill! 🚀 @CMaherRacing @djgibbons22 — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 14, 2025 QUEEN OF CLUBS (race 1) is a promising filly and she defeated a smart field of two-year-olds in the opener. She's a well-bred daughter of Maurice and will certainly get out over further. She's likely to have a short break now but watch out for her in the fillies classics in spring. ♣ï¸ Queen Of Clubs steams home down the middle to win the first at Rosehill! @GaryPortelli — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 14, 2025 TASORAAY (race 4) set a solid tempo in front and this might have left him vulnerable late. He still fought back hard when challenged and his close second to Don't Forget Jack was full of merit. Tasoraay was only second-up from a spell and can win again this winter. Don't Forget Jack gets back to form with the perfect run at Rosehill! ðŸ' @NockBraith | @ANeashamRacing — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 14, 2025 ASSAILANT (race 9) has shaped promisingly in his two Australian starts including his third to Freight Train. The former English galloper got to 2000m quickly, led for a long way and stuck to his task under pressure. Assailant can only continue to improve and is ready to win. 🚂 Freight Train finally salutes to win the TAB Handicap at Rosehill! @MickPriceRacing — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 14, 2025 â– â– â– â– â– CRUNCH TIME WINNING PROPOSAL (race 5) ran the fastest final 600m sectional of the day when she recorded a 33.35s split to dive through under Overfull and score a deserved win. Winning Proposal also produced a brilliant 200m closing split of 11.12s. SACRED ROCKS (race 10) finished fast to win the closer, running her final 600m in 33.66s with a 11.08s closing sectional. MOTOSCAFO (race 3) might have only won a Midway but his effort should not be underestimated. He charged home his final 600m in 33.57s and ran the fastest 200m closing split of the day in 10.97s. Motoscafo flies down the outside and wins on the line at Rosehill! ðŸ'Œ @JTRacingRwik — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 14, 2025 QUEEN OF CLUBS (race 1) powered home her final 600m in 34.43s and a closing 200m split of 11.61s to score her first win in four starts. DON'T FORGET JACK (race 4) attacked the line strongly with a 34.08s final 600m to score well. He was able to run his 200m closing split of 11.53s. â– â– â– â– â– WHAT THEY SAID 'Can you book me for the horse in this race next year!' — Jockey Adam Hyeronimus after combining with Sir Lucan to win a second successive Winter Cup. 'We're very excited to win the Winter Cup again and the owners are flying over to London tonight. Monique and Adam (Annetts), they're jumping on a plane to go and see Storm Boy run next Saturday. If they were flying economy they will be flying first class now.' — Stable representative Neil Paine. Hear from Neil Paine & winning jockey Adam Hyeronimus after Sir Lucan wins its second Winter Cup! ðŸ'‡ — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 14, 2025 'It's all good – the pressure, that's what you live for.'' — Star apprentice Braith Nock after winning on favourite Mickey's Medal. 'She does things at home that are (special). She worked with Kilbrannan, who is a handy two-year-old (half-brother to Portelli's Golden Slipper winner Fireburn) and she went so well I said, 'she can't get beaten'.' — Trainer Gary Portelli after Queen Of Clubs' impressive win. "One door closes and another opens" It's been a tough 48 hours for @GaryPortelli but Queen Of Clubs has set her sights on a big spring! 🙌 — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 14, 2025 'She is very progressive and has a great, big stride on her. At the 200m, I thought she was just going to get there but then at the 100m she really lengthened nicely.' — Andrew Calder, rider of Queen Of Clubs. â– â– â– â– â– STEWARDS SAY Sydney's form jockeys Dylan Gibbons and Adam Hyeronimus both incurred week-long careless riding suspensions due to start next Sunday. Gibbons was suspended from June 22 to June 29 after he was found guilty by stewards of causing interference on runner-up HALF YOURS (race 9). Hyeronimus was suspended for the same period after his winning ride on SIR LUCAN (race 8). FORM JOCKEYS HANDED SUSPENSIONS Dylan Gibbons and Adam Hyeronimus had their winning days marred after both were given careless riding suspensions at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. Story: @RayThomas_1 ðŸ'‡ — Racenet (@RacenetTweets) June 14, 2025 HELL OF A FOX (race 2) drew the outside barrier and was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Near the 900m she was hampered and carried wider by RED RAGS TO BULLS, which shifted out when being steadied off heels. Jockey Brodie Loy said that after enduring a wide run, the filly was one paced to the finish line and raced as though it had come to the end of its preparation. CODETTA (race 5) was hampered and taken wider by KING'S SECRET approaching the 600m. On straightening, she was again inconvenienced by King's Secret, which shifted out. Apprentice Jace McMurray told stewards that Codetta was slow to begin and settled further back than intended. He said when then unable to obtain cover Codetta was obliged to race wide throughout the event. KING'S SECRET (race 5) jumped out of the barriers and was bumped by Slinky, which shifted in. King's Secret finished fifth and a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding had the thumps. â– â– â– â– â– RON DUFFICY'S RANDWICK SNAPSHOT RUN OF THE DAY SACRED ROCKS did a great job having her first Sydney run. She met a pretty slick field and you have to like the way she charged over the top of them late looking a nice mare for the future. FORGET THEY RAN CODETTA and HALF YOURS were both beaten favourites on the day but I wouldn't mark them down on their performances. They both had awkward draws not having much go their way and can make amends moving forward. HORSE TO FOLLOW Outside of those mentioned above I thought the debut performance of SCOOP THE POOL had merit. He's a two-year-old who has a pedigree to just keep improving especially over further than what he contested here. Super Norwest with a super lunge to win at Rosehill for Matthew Dale! ðŸ'¥ @NockBraith — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 14, 2025 â– â– â– â– â–

Dixon warms up for Inter Dominion with Albion Park domination
Premier trainer Grant Dixon has more string to his bow than just champion pacer Leap To Fame heading into a huge hometown Inter Dominion Carnival. Despite Leap To Fame having a night off, Dixon and wife, Trista, flexed their muscle with a feature treble at Albion Park last night. Leap To Fame, who is already two-from-two this campaign, will be back to cap his Inter Dominion preparation at Albion Park next Saturday night. Team Dixon snared the quinella in last night's feature, the Flashing Red Discretionary, when Aroda led throughout with Trista aboard to bet Charge Ahead. Aroda's next target will be a title defence in the $106,070 Group 2 Redcliffe Cup on June 28 before the Inter Dominion starts at Albion Park a week later. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Earlier, Dixon's exciting three-year-old Path To Greatness landed a huge plunge ($5.50 into $1.70) to lead throughout and easily win the Queensland Sun. The win secured the gelding a start in the $350,000 Group 1 Rising Sun at Albion Park on July 5. Path To Greatness, who boasts seven wins from just 13 starts, beat stablemate Charge Ahead to give Team Dixon another quinella. The most exciting win of the night came from Team Dixon's recent stable addition, Captains Mistress. The glamour Kiwi filly toyed with older rivals to win by 9.1m in a slick 1min53.1sec mile rate for 1660m. Her major target is the Group 1 Queensland Oaks. The one minor disappointment of the night for the stable came when prepost Queensland Derby favourite Fate Awaits had to be content with third place behind exciting Kiwi raider, Rubira, in race nine. Rubira gave Kiwi Hall of Fame trainer Mark Purdon, who trains in partnership with son Nathan, part of a perfect start to their Queensland raid. Earlier, their star trotter Oscar Bonavena toyed with his rivals to win and stamp himself as a major player for the Inter Dominion trotting series. Rubira has the South-East and Redcliffe Derbys before the Group 1 Rising Sun on July 5 and the Group 1 Queensland Derby on July 19. 'It was great to get wins with them both because they needed the runs and will take improvement from them,' Nathan Purdon said. Champion NSW trainer Luke McCarthy will launch his Queensland raid from next week after stars Don Hugo and Hesitate won impressively at Menangle last night. Miracle Mile and Inter Dominion winner Don Hugo has easily won both starts this campaign and looms as the only serious danger to Leap To Fame in the Inter Dominion pacing series. Hesitate is likely to head to the Queensland Derby via the Rising Sun. 'I'll have a nice team in Brisbane for a month or so,' McCarthy said. The Queensland flavour extended to Melton last night where trainer-driver Chris Svanosio confirmed and impressive win by his US-bred trotting mare Aldebaran Acrux had booked her a trip to the Inter Dominion. She will accompany star stablemate Arcee Phoenix, who returns from a break at Melton next Saturday night. • Adam Hamilton is a paid contributor writing on harness racing for News Corp.
