Could the Lakers end up trading Luka Doncic?
The Los Angeles Lakers and their fans seemingly gained a new lease on life, especially when it came to contending for the NBA championship, when the organization landed generational superstar Luka Doncic in that stunning trade four months ago. While it hasn't paid dividends just yet, that trade was presumably made for the immediate future beginning next season rather than the 2024-25 campaign.
But is it possible the Lakers will get buyer's remorse at some point? While Doncic has the potential to become one of the five to 10 greatest basketball players of all time, he hasn't exactly been in great shape, and many have criticized him for allegedly not taking good care of his body.

Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report listed Doncic as the team's most untouchable player in terms of trade talks in a recent article. But he did imply that there is a scenario in which L.A. may end up wanting to move on from the Slovenian wonder.

"In Dončić, the Los Angeles Lakers have a bridge to their post-LeBron James era," Hughes wrote. "He'll be the superstar cornerstone upon which the franchise's next decade is built.
"The only way that'll change is if [Nico] Harrison's justification for moving Dončić this past February—poor conditioning and shoddy defense—reaches a point where Los Angeles winds up with the same concerns.
"Of course, if you view the trade from Dallas to L.A. as a wake-up call for Dončić, it's pretty hard to imagine his bad habits continuing."
So far this offseason, it looks as if Doncic is already changing those bad habits. He looked noticeably slimmer at a recent Real Madrid game, and at least one report has indicated that he has at least changed his mindset as far as his fitness and conditioning.
He has a player option for the 2026-27 season that he can decline in order to become a free agent next summer. But he did indicate in a recent interview that he would like to remain with the Purple and Gold long term.

Bronny James' NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers didn't get off to the greatest of starts, but he did show some promise in the latter stages of his rookie season. James had some solid showings and impressed in the G League, and a Western Conference Executive believes the Lakers want him to be part of the rotation next season. "I know the guy gets a lot of grief because of who his dad is, but we've seen a lot of tape on (Bronny) and the fact is, he was a lot better player in April than he was in October, and definitely in July." There is no denying that James improved a fair bit. The early signs were so bad that the Lakers were hammered for selecting the former USC guard with the 55th pick of the 2024 NBA Draft. James averaged 8.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game for the Lakers in the Summer League. He was very inefficient, too, as he shot 35.0% from the field and 15.8% from beyond the arc. Things didn't get much better in the preseason either. James averaged 4.2 points, 1.7 rebounds, 0.3 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game while shooting 29.7% from the field and 8.3% from three. Advertisement That provided James' doubters with ammunition to claim he did not belong in the NBA and that he had only made it in because he is LeBron James' son. There was an avalanche of criticism coming his way, but he did eventually start playing better. James would end up averaging 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.9 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game for the South Bay Lakers in the G League. He was a bit more efficient, too, shooting 44.0% from the field and 38.0% from beyond the arc. While some might dismiss G League performances, we are talking about someone who looked out of place in the Summer League at one point. James had taken some big strides, and the executive is backing him to be a regular for the Lakers in 2025-26. "He's 20 years old," the executive stated. "He had a whole year where his development was thrown all out of whack. But he can defend the perimeter, and he showed he can shoot the 3. Advertisement "If he can show that wasn't a fluke, he is going to start getting 10, 15 minutes a night because the team is going to feel like they can trust him," the executive added. "I think he is going to do all that. He is going to be a regular for them next year." This executive isn't the only one with this belief. Lakers insider Dave McMenamin thinks James could be a rotation player by midseason. That might be a bit too soon for the 20-year-old, though. James has shown some promise on the defensive end, and the outside shot is falling with greater regularity, but he didn't even come close to cracking the Lakers' rotation as a rookie. It was only when the team had an injury crisis that he got meaningful minutes on the court. If the Lakers were in rebuild mode in 2025-26, then maybe James, who averaged 2.3 points, 0.7 rebounds, 0.8 assists, and 0.3 steals per game as a rookie, could have been part of the rotation. They aspire to be serious title contenders, though, and you've got to be a pretty good NBA player to play significant minutes for a team like that. The Los Angeles Lakers saw their season come to an end after a swift first-round exit, courtesy of the Minnesota Timberwolves. But the loss may have been the key to triggering new growth, as it helped the team outline the necessary moves they needed to make in the offseason. The team's offseason plan was made abundantly clear during the team's last press conference of the season. Lakers GM Rob Pelinka highlighted their need for a big man, specifically an athletic big man who could be a defensive threat or a floor-spacing big. Advertisement While the player profile covers a vast spectrum, it is quite evident that the Lakers are looking for a player who can run the floor with their star, Luka Doncic. With this in mind, ESPN's Dave McMenamin appeared on "Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre" to reveal the kind of players who the Purple and Gold had shown an interest in. While referring to the team's links to Charlotte Hornets big man Mark Williams, McMenamin said: "I do know the Lakers made a call to the Hawks around the trade deadline about Okongwu. I think lob threat, athleticism, absolutely. In terms of being a perfect fit, maybe not. They might not get a perfect fit, though." Atlanta Hawks center Onyeka Okongwu would make for an interesting pick-up if the Lakers choose to pursue it. The Hawks' center is only 24 years old and played in a total of 74 games last season. This kind of durability is appreciated for a Lakers team that had grown accustomed to having injury-prone big men grace the roster. Although he doesn't boast as much defensive upside as Williams, he is an incredibly athletic center with a lot of potential to pair well with a playmaker in the pick-and-roll. The USC product has been on the receiving end of some great lobs by Hawks guard Trae Young. Given how effective Young is at facilitating easy baskets for rim-running bigs, it is quite evident that Doncic may be able to bring the most out of him as well. Being able to pair well with the Slovenian is a big parameter for the Lakers. This aspect has seen the team linked to several players, both in free agency as well as the trade market. From trade targets like Daniel Gafford and Nic Claxton to upcoming free agents like Clint Capela and Brook Lopez, the Purple and Gold have kept their radar open. Advertisement McMenamin also made an important addition to his statement by mentioning that the Lakers will have the taxpayer mid-level exception available to them. While it will be difficult for the Lakers to acquire a legitimate center under normal circumstances, there have been trade proposals that facilitate Capela joining them using it.
