MUSCAT: The Omani national team for athletes with disabilities continued its impressive performance on the international stage, securing two silver medals at the Sharjah International Para Athletics Meeting, held from February 2 to 4. The event featured elite para athletes from various countries, showcasing a high level of competition.
The two silver medals were won by Saif al Muqbali, who finished second in the 200 metres race (T46 category) and Taha al Harrasi, who clinched silver in the 100 metres race (T36 category). Their participation comes as part of the Oman Paralympic Committee's preparations for the upcoming West Asian Championship, which will be hosted in Muscat in 2026.

Expressing his joy at winning silver, Saif al Muqbali acknowledged the tough competition but was pleased with his performance.
He stated: "I was hoping to win the gold medal, but I am satisfied with my performance and will work on improving my speed for future events. This achievement gives me great motivation to prepare for the West Asian Championship."
Similarly, Taha al Harrasi expressed his pride in securing a medal for Oman, saying "the race was challenging, but I gave it my all to win this silver medal. My ambition does not stop here, and I promise Omani fans more achievements in future championships."

Meanwhile, Oman para athletics team member Sami al Salimi is set to compete in the Asian Hand-cycling Championship in Thailand, scheduled to take place from February 6 to 10. The Oman Paralympic Committee is aiming for strong results in this championship, reinforcing its previous Asian successes.
Ahead of his departure, Al Salimi emphasised his determination to defend his 2024 Asian title, despite the challenges ahead.
He stated: "I have prepared well for this championship, and I hope to achieve a top ranking and raise Oman's flag high once again. I am confident in my ability to deliver a strong performance."
The Omani delegation for the championship includes Sami al Salimi, coach Ali al Anqoudi and delegation head Adnan al Aweidi.

Tashkent- President Dr Shavkat Mirziyoyev of the Republic of Uzbekistan received H E Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, in Tashkent on Wednesday. During the meeting, Al Yousef conveyed the greetings and best wishes of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to the Uzbek President. He reaffirmed the deep-rooted fraternal ties between the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Uzbekistan. The minister also extended his congratulations to President Mirziyoyev on the historic qualification of the Uzbekistan national football team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup – the country's first-ever appearance on football's biggest stage. He described the achievement as a moment of pride not only for Uzbekistan but for the entire Central Asian region. Al Yousef welcomed the Uzbek government's decision to grant Omani citizens a 30-day visa exemption, describing it as a positive step towards enhancing tourism, cultural exchange, and commercial ties between the two nations. He further noted that Oman Air plans to launch direct flights to Tashkent in the near future, aiming to strengthen connectivity and facilitate people-to-people contact. The meeting was attended by H E Assayida Wafa Jabr al Busaidi, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to the Republic of Uzbekistan, along with senior officials from both countries.
