‘It's horrifically beautiful,' The Clothesline Project, a visual testimony of violence on a community
BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) – The Women's Center at Virginia Tech and United Feminist Movement are honoring the end of Women's History Month and the beginning of Sexual Assault Awareness Month with the Clothesline Project. The project is a visual testimony to the effects of gender-based and sexual violence on the community.
Hundreds of shirts were hanging in Squires Hall on Tech's campus on Wednesday, March 27th, all representing someone's story of violence.

Southwest & Central Virginia Honor Flight prepares for 10th annual trip to Washington D.C.
The shirts were on display side by side to show the victims standing together. Shirts are color-coded, with each color representing different traumas:
White: for victims who have died of violence.
Yellow or beige: survivors who have been battered or assaulted.
Red, pink, or orange: For those who have been sexually assaulted.
Blue or green: for survivors of incest or child sexual abuse.
Purple or lavender: for those attacked because of their sexual orientation.
Black: for those disabled because of violence.
'I think it is horrifically beautiful. Every shirt is a work of art. Every shirt tells the story of a survivor or a victim of gender based or sexual violence, and it's an awareness that people need to have about what happens in our community,' said Susan Anderson, the facilitator for the Clothesline Project on Virginia Tech's campus.

The display has been put up annually at Virginia Tech since the 1990s. The stories shown on the shirts represent the entire New River Valley, women, men, students, faculty, and community members.

'It really raises awareness that violence happens in our community. We are no less safe or more safe than any other college community,' said Anderson, 'We want to raise that awareness that people can't have these prejudices like, 'violence only happens to poor people,' or 'people who live in that neighborhood' or 'this ethnic group' or 'those religious people.' Violence cuts across all socioeconomic lines, all kinds of lines, and it is something that we need to understand so that we can work as a community to try to lessen it.'

For the rest of this week, those who wish to create a shirt are able to from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the women's center on Washington Street. This is open to everyone in the community.
Another time to see some of the shirts collected over the decades is at the Annual Take Back the Night on April 10th at 7 p.m., an annual rally on campus against all forms of sexual violence.

Terry is a white male, with blonde hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing black Nike sweatpants, a black hoodie with a white graphic on the back, and a black beanie. His hair is currently cut short. Police say he was last seen at 2:20p.m. in the 500 block of Yorkshire Street in Salem, leaving the location on foot. VSP say his disappearance poses a 'credible threat to his health and safety.' Cole Hocker wants to follow Olympic gold with two more career firsts in 2025
Naturally, Cole Hocker wants to follow his 2024 Olympic gold medal by taking the world title this September, but that's not his only goal this summer. Hocker, who last Aug. 6 became the second American in the last 116 years to win an Olympic 1500m, was asked what would make 2025 a successful follow-up campaign. 'World champion,' he said without hesitation. 'That's, without a doubt, the goal. To go back to back in what I think is one of the most competitive eras that the 1500m has ever seen, that would make it a success without a doubt. Obviously, fast times are always in the cards, and I want to run fast, but most importantly, I want to win.' Beyond winning, the 23-year-old has sights set on another event. 'Also making the U.S. team in the 5k alongside the 1500m, I think that would be a huge step in the right direction for my career,' said Hocker, who was seventh in the Olympic Trials 5000m in his fifth total race of that meet. No American has competed in both the 1500m and 5000m at an Olympics or World Championships since Bernard Lagat, who won both events at the 2007 Worlds and took silver and bronze in 2009. Elle St. Pierre did qualify for both events for the 2024 Paris Games but dropped the 5000m to focus on the 1500m. To make his double happen, Hocker will most likely have to place in the top three in both events at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships from July 31-Aug. 3 at his old college home in Eugene, Oregon. Unlike Olympic Trials, he would only have to race three times at nationals. In the 1500m, the U.S. has developed depth over the last few years, just as the world has. At nationals, Hocker must deal with Olympic bronze medalist Yared Nuguse, Hobbs Kessler (fifth in Paris) and possibly emerging talents like Jonah Koech, who won a Diamond League race last week. In the 5000m, Olympic bronze medalist Grant Fisher was the lone American to finish in the top eight at either the 2023 Worlds or the Paris Games. Hocker, who trains under Virginia Tech coach Ben Thomas, will be race tested like never before thanks to the new Grand Slam Track series. He has faced both Nuguse and Olympic silver medalist Josh Kerr of Great Britain at three meets already this season. Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the Tokyo Olympic champion, hasn't raced since March 23 while recovering from an Achilles injury. In six total 1500m races since Paris, Hocker has finished second, third, third, third, third and second. Hocker's gold medal — won with a kick from third place in the last 100 meters — sits on a dresser in his room. No fancy display case. 'From what I've experienced and what I've gotten, you put feelings and emotions onto this object,' he said. 'I try to detach myself from that and just let it be a mark of what a beautiful season I put together. Look at the full season as almost like a work of art. That was a perfect season for me. Martinsville man charged after allegedly found asleep with teenager in car
HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The Henry County Sheriff's Office has announced the arrest of a man after allegedly being found asleep with a teenage girl in a car late in Collinsville on May 31. The sheriff said that a deputy who was patrolling the area near 2400 Virginia Avenue allegedly witnessed a suspicious red Dodge Charger with the engine running behind the AutoZone store around 5:08 a.m. on Saturday. The deputy approached the Charger and allegedly saw a man in the driver's seat, as well as a 14-year-old girl in the passenger seat, according to the sheriff. Both occupants appeared to be sleeping. The man was allegedly shirtless, and the teenage girl appeared to be unclothed, with 'several open containers of alcoholic beverages visible inside the vehicle,' the sheriff said. Infant found safe in Franklin County While investigating, it was allegedly determined that the man, who was later identified as 33-year-old Roniticus Lamar Wilson of Martinsville, and the teenage girl, knew each other and 'had been attempting to engage in a romantic relationship.' Roniticus Lamar Wilson has been arrested and charged with the following: Carnal Knowledge of a Child in violation of (Virginia Code § 18.2-63) Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor (Virginia Code § 18.2-371) Wilson is currently being held at the Henry County Adult Detention Center without bond.
