
European orbital rocket crashes in Norway shortly after launch
The Spectrum rocket, developed by German start-up Isar Aerospace, started smoking from its sides, then crashed back to Earth with a powerful explosion just after launching from Norway's Andøya Spaceport in the Arctic, in live video broadcast on YouTube.
Isar Aerospace, which had said it did not expect to reach orbit with the launch, said the two-stage rocket fell into the sea, adding that "the launch pad seems to be intact".
Andøya Space, the Norwegian public firm that operates the spaceport, said "crisis response" measures had been activated following the "incident".
Regional police said no injuries or damage beyond the rocket itself had been reported.
Orbital rockets are designed to place loads such as satellites into or beyond Earth's orbit.
'Great success'
Ahead of the launch, which had been repeatedly postponed due to weather conditions, Isar Aerospace had downplayed expectations, saying the goal was not to reach orbit in its first attempt.
"Our first test flight met all our expectations, achieving a great success. We had a clean liftoff, 30 seconds of flight and even got to validate our Flight Termination System," said Daniel Metzler, the firm's co-founder and chief executive.
In an online press conference following the launch, Metzler insisted Isar was "very well positioned" to take advantage of the rocket-to-satellite market, adding that the company would "make the adjustments that are necessary" to the spacecraft.
Two more Spectrum rockets are already in development, the company said.
The 28-metre (92-foot) tall, two-metre diameter rocket has a one-tonne carrying capacity, but was unloaded for the test flight.
Spectrum's blast-off was the first of an orbital launch vehicle from the European continent, excluding Russia, and Europe's first financed almost exclusively by the private sector.

"Today is an important day for German and European space travel," said German Economy Minister Robert Habeck.
"Isar Aerospace can and will make a decisive contribution to securing Europe's independent access to space."
A first European orbital launch attempt was made in 2023 by billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson's Virgin Orbit.
It attempted to use a Boeing 747 to launch a rocket into orbit from southwest England, but failed, and the company folded.
'New Space'
Europe has had no access to Russian space stations or launchers since Moscow's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which sent diplomatic relations on a downward spiral.
Europe's space industry has also seen delays in the development of the Ariane 6 rocket and the suspension of the Vega-C satellite launcher after an accident.
It wasn't until March 6, when the first commercial flight of an Ariane 6 rocket took off from French Guyana, that Europe was able to regain launch independence after several months without its own access to space for heavy payloads.
While the US already has giants such as Elon Musk's SpaceX and Jeff Bezos-founded Blue Origin, in Europe, commercial space activities driven by private companies -- dubbed "New Space" -- are still in their infancy.

Isar Aerospace was founded in 2018 in Munich.
Europe is also home to Germany's HyImpulse and Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA), French groups Latitude and MaiaSpace and Spain's PLD Space, all racing to establish themselves as key players in the sector.
Sunday's launch generated "tonnes of data that the teams can now evaluate and learn from", an Isar Aerospace commentator said on the YouTube live stream.
In parallel with the development of new rockets, a number of spaceport projects have emerged across Europe, from the Portuguese Azores to the British Shetland Islands, Norway's Andoya and Esrange in neighbouring Sweden, many vying to be the first to launch.

Norway's Vipps app set to enable money transfers across Europe
Vipps users in Norway could be able to send funds to the three southern European countries and Poland by next summer, Vipps MobilePay said in a press release on Thursday. The company has joined up with several other European money-sharing platforms as part of a project to connect users across borders. That should mean that a Vipps user in Norway may be able to send money to a user of the Spanish payment app Bizum in the same way they currently send funds to other Vipps users. Other platforms based in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Poland joining the project mean that its eventual reach could be 100 million users of the various apps across Europe. Additional countries could also join the network in future, according to Vipps MobilePay. "We are now starting to make the solutions work together, which is called interoperability. Even though the wallets look the same on the outside, they are built very differently. We are starting with 'person to person', and then moving on to 'person to business', Rune Garborg, CEO at Vipps MobilePay, said in a press release. Vipps users in Norway can already send funds to MobilePay or Vipps users in Sweden, Denmark, and Finland, with the platforms in each of the Nordic countries already linked . Sweden, like Norway, uses Vipps, while Finland and Denmark use MobilePay. The two apps have around 12 million users across the four countries. Advertisement Cross-border payments within the Nordic region currently incur a fee of four percent, charged by Vipps MobilePay. This is on top of currency conversion surcharges. Vipps MobilePay hasn't yet confirmed whether fees will apply to new countries, or what those fees might be when introduced. In order to use Vipps in Norway, users need to have an account with a Norwegian bank and at least one personal debit or credit card issued by a Norwegian bank. Users also need a Norwegian social security number in order to verify their identity with the BankID electronic ID, and a Norwegian phone number. 'Choose Europe': New €500m push launched to lure disgruntled US scientists
French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen were set on Monday to host a conference in Paris aimed at attracting US researchers ready to relocate because of President Donald Trump's policies. European commissioners, scientists, academics and ministers for research from European Union member countries will discuss, among other things, financial incentives to lure disgruntled US scientists across the Atlantic. Paris's Sorbonne University hosted the conference, called "Choose Europe for Science", which was to close with speeches by Macron and von der Leyen. The European Union will launch a new incentives package worth €500 million to make the bloc "a magnet for researchers" from elsewhere, Commission chief von der Leyen said. Speaking at a Paris conference she said of the $567-million initiative that "we have to offer the right incentives". Macron took the opportunity to criticise Donald Trump's policies towards science. "Nobody could have imagined that this great global democracy whose economic model depends so heavily on free science... was going to commit such an error," he said. "We refuse a diktat consisting of any government being able to say you cannot research this or that." Von der Leyen also said questioning the role of science was "a gigantic miscalculation". "Science holds the key to our future here in Europe," she said. US research programmes face closure, tens of thousands of federal workers have been fired and foreign students fear possible deportation for their political views. Europe's great rivers hit by 'alarming' microplastic pollution
"Alarming" levels of microplastic have been found in major rivers across Europe according to scientists in 14 studies published simultaneously Monday. "The pollution is present in all European rivers" studied, said French scientist Jean-François Ghiglione, who coordinated the large-scale operation across nine major rivers from the Thames to the Tiber. "Alarming" pollution of on average "three microplastics per cubic metre of water" was observed in all of them, according to the results published in the journal of Environmental Science and Pollution Research. This is far from the 40 microplastics per cubic metre recorded in the world's 10 most polluted rivers -- the Yellow River, Yangtze, Mekong, Ganges, Nile, Niger, Indus, Amur, Pearl and Hai -- which irrigate countries where most plastic is produced or plastic waste is processed. But this does not take into account the volume of water flowing. '3,000 particles a second' On the Rhone in Valence, France, the fast flow means there are "3,000 plastic particles every second", said Ghiglione. The Seine in Paris has around 900 per second. "The mass of microplastics invisible to the naked eye is more significant than that of the visible ones," said Ghiglione -- a result that "surprised" researchers. This was confirmed by analytical advances made during the studies, which began in 2019. "Large microplastics float and are collected at the surface, while invisible ones are distributed throughout the water column and are ingested by many animals and organisms," said Ghiglione, head of research in marine microbial ecotoxicology at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). The researchers then made their way upstream until they reached the first major city on each of the waterways. "Microplastics are smaller than a grain of rice," said Alexandra Ter Halle, a chemist at the CNRS in Toulouse, who took part in the analysis. 'Mermaid tears' The particles are less than five millimetres in size, with the smallest invisible to the naked eye. These include synthetic textile fibres from washing clothes and microplastics released from car tyres or when unscrewing plastic bottle caps. Advertisement Researchers also found virgin plastic pellets, the raw granules used to manufacture plastic products. One of the studies identified a virulent bacterium on a microplastic in the Loire in France, capable of causing infections in humans. Another unexpected finding was that a quarter of microplastics discovered in rivers are not derived from waste but come from industrial plastic pellets. These granules, dubbed "mermaid tears", can also sometimes be found scattered along beaches after maritime incidents. "What we see is the pollution is diffuse and established" and "comes from everywhere" in the rivers, he added. "The international scientific coalition we are part of (as part of international UN negotiations on reducing plastic pollution) is calling for a major reduction in the production of primary plastic because we know that plastic production is directly linked to pollution," he said.
