The defending WNBA champion, New York Liberty continue to pace the league. After taking down the Washington Mystics 86-78 on Thursday night, the Liberty remain undefeated. They now sit at 8-0 on the season, tied for the best record in the WNBA with the Minnesota Lynx.

The Liberty seek to become just the fourth team in WNBA history to win back-to-back championships. While their roster consists of multiple MVP candidates, they win with a balanced attack.
Their franchise's recent accomplishments also rival the best New York has to offer in the sports world. With a city that dons multiple professional teams in nearly every sport, the Liberty are the most recent to win a championship.
As deep as New York sports history runs, the Liberty stand as the only team to hoist a championship trophy in more than a decade. The New York Giants are a distant second, last winning a Super Bowl in 2012.
With that in mind, the Liberty's 8-0 start to this season is not only impressive, it's down right historic. As per @statmuse on X, the Liberty are the first professional New York basketball team to start a season 8-0.
In the history of professional basketball (NBA, ABA, and WNBA), no team has ever gotten off to a start like the Liberty.

Statistically speaking, the Liberty are the best team in the WNBA this season on both sides of the ball.
The Liberty's offense leads the league in points per game (91.1). Their defense leads the league in points allowed (72.1). And they also lead the league in field goal percentage (48.6) as well as blocks per game (5.7).

The Liberty's chance to remain undefeated and move to 9-0 comes on Tuesday when they take on Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN.

Associated Press DENVER (AP) — Francisco Lindor had a soothing remedy for his broken right pinky toe — a go-ahead hit. Questionable before Friday's game, the Mets shortstop entered as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning and delivered a two-run double to send New York to a 4-2 win over the Colorado Rockies. Lindor sent a cutter from reliever Zach Agnos (0-2) into right field to score Juan Soto and a sliding Pete Alonso. It was Lindor's first go-ahead, pinch-hit RBI of his career, according to the postgame notes. 'Once it comes to those moments, I'm just there to make something happen,' Lindor explained. 'Just get a good pitch, and whatever happens, happens. Don't let the moment get too big.' He tuned out any pain from his toe once he stepped into the batter's box. 'Something is not 100% for sure. But I'm not the only one,' Lindor said. 'I would say most of the guys are not 100%. So there's no excuses." Lindor said manager Carlos Mendoza asked him around the fourth or fifth inning if he might be available to hit. His response was simple. 'I said, 'Yeah,'' Lindor recounted. Lindor's availability — pain and all — comes as no surprise to Alonso. 'That's really special, having a teammate willing to put his body on the line every single day like that,' said Alonso, who had a big game with his bat (a two-run double), his arm (he threw out a runner at home in the fifth) and his sliding ability (he avoided a tag at home on Lindor's double). 'That's a true pro, in my opinion, and he embodies that.' Lindor's pinky toe was broken by a pitch from Dodgers right-hander Tony Gonsolin in the first inning on Wednesday. He sat out Thursday and recovered enough to pinch-hit Friday. He may even be in the lineup on Saturday. 'I would like to start,' Lindor said. 'It's going to be up to the trainers and (Mendoza) and we are going to make a decision together. ... Hopefully tomorrow I'll wake up in a good spot.' Manaea, who has been sidelined all season by an oblique injury, struck out two and didn't walk a batter. San Francisco took the last two games of its dramatically narrow four-game series with San Diego after dropping the first two. As Krukow said, the Giants needed to leave with something after dropping their first four games against the Padres earlier in the 2025 MLB season. And, after splitting the series in which every game was decided by one run, the Giants appear rejuvenated to many, including Krukow, and with much thanks to the franchise's first-year president of baseball operations. The former San Francisco pitcher highlighted Posey's decision to shake up the roster, specifically by designating fan favorite LaMonte Wade Jr. for assignment, as the gutsy decision-making that the organization desperately needed. Krukow felt the Giants needed a spark to get back on track and prove their seriousness. 'Oh, 100 percent,' Krukow said about Posey's leadership being on display. 'And it's instinct, too; instinct to know that everyone in that clubhouse is waiting – waiting for a game-changing move. What this also says is – who's a better guy than LaMonte Wade Jr.? Nobody. And he's a fan favorite. Advertisement 'That was not an easy decision, as you kept thinking he was going to put it together, and he couldn't do it, and time ran out.' After making some changes and grinding out a pair of wins over San Diego, San Francisco appears to have 'redefined' itself, according to Krukow.
