Will Smith opens up about his spiritual journey and how the 'material world' only had so much to offer

Hollywood superstar Will Smith opened up on a new podcast about the spiritual journey he's been on since his fall from grace after slapping comedian Chris Rock on stage at the 2022 Academy Awards.
During a conversation with Christian rapper Lecrae on the April 4 "The Deep End with Lecrae," Smith was candid about the "inward work" he's done over the past few years to reach a "brand new" version of himself, both professionally and personally.
The "Independence Day" star told Lecrae that he had to "trust himself and God" to "let go" of things in his life that weren't serving him and believe there was a bigger plan.
Smith confessed that he also realized all the fame and success he earned didn't bring life meaning.

"It is such a rare gift to reach the end of the material world, to reach the end of money. To get to the point where you can buy anything you want, and you sit in your house and there's nothing else to buy. Whereas buying things used to scratch an itch," he said.

"Now there's nothing else to buy… To have had all the sex that you wanted. How many more number one movies do I need? How many more Grammys do I need?" Smith said. "It's such a rare gift to get to the end of the material world and a place where only God is left."
Smith said he came to realize that the "material world" only had so much to offer.
"People usually do that when they hit rock bottom. But there's a corresponding place to rock bottom which I call cliff top. Where you actually pop out of the material world and you [realize] there's nothing left here," he continued. "And inward is the only place left."
Russell Brand Opens Up About Sobriety, Conversion To Christianity, In Interview With Sean Hannity
"There's no country you can go to. There's no relationship you can start. No new job that's going to do it… You get to the end of it. It's excruciating, but I would wish that on everybody. I wish everybody could get everything they want to see that it doesn't satisfy," he added.
Later in the interview, Smith said that while he was raised by a Christian grandmother, his current views on spirituality have been shaped by other religions, including Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.
"My religion is love," he said. "I believe in the oneness and possibility of harmony of people who are reaching for the one truth."
Smith said he recognized that he lived a "blessed" life and said he doesn't view himself as better than those who may have to make different life choices because of where they grew up or the situations they've been put in.
Smith is currently promoting his newest music album, "Based on a True Story," which is his first full album in twenty years.Original article source: Will Smith opens up about his spiritual journey and how the 'material world' only had so much to offer

‘Incredibly, Incredibly Disappointed'

Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC With Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Jon Jones' random retirement still sending shockwaves throughout the combat sports world, more and more fighters and analysts are reacting to the news. Advertisement Today (Mon., June 23, 2025), long-time Jones fan and ESPN talking head Stephen A Smith gave his thoughts on the 'Bones' retirement and he's pretty bummed. 'I'm not going to accuse the greatest mixed martial artist I've ever seen in my life in Jon 'Bones' Jones [of ducking Tom Aspinall], 'Smith said on ESPN's First Take. 'I have that much admiration for him. Having said that, I'm incredibly, incredibly disappointed with this news. If you are a fighter, which he is at a very elite level, and that's the fight that people want to see, give us the fight that we wanna see. 'What do we complain about with boxing? We complain about promoters and others getting in the way of us getting the fights that we wanna see when we wanna see it. And Jon 'Bones' Jones, he's literally this kind of person,' Smith continued. 'If you get on his nerves, one or two things will happen. They wanna kick your ass, which he's fully capable of doing and does it at an elite level, or he'll say to hell with you. I'm not gonna give you the privilege of fighting me because that fighter annoyed him.' 'As opposed to looking at the audience out here spanning millions and millions of people who recognize your greatness and wanna see you against this guy who's been calling you out for the longest time,' Smith added. 'Handle it. Then, retire if you want to, but don't retire, because there's not a fight out there that you're interested in.' Advertisement 'This guy irritates you, so 'to hell with it, I'm not gonna give him the privilege to fight me.' It ain't about that,' Smith concluded. 'That audience out there who loves you, who recognizes your unquestionable greatness, we wanna see you handle this guy!' Smith might have had some dumb takes in the past, but he's right on the money with this one. Not only did Jones rob Aspinall of a year of his athletic prime, but he also robbed him of getting a chance at fighting greatness. And now, the newer fans (or old-heads) of the sport will not remember Jones' early career; they will remember him ducking the rightful interim champion. Legacy secured, though. More from

Will Smith Reveals The One Thing He Regrets About How He Raised His Children Jaden And Willow Smith

Will Smith just opened up about what he considers a major mistake he made while raising his children, Jaden and Willow Smith, and explained what he'd do it differently if given the chance. While appearing on "Heart Breakfast with Jamie and Amanda," the iconic actor, who recently returned to music with his new album, "Based on a True Story," admitted that he and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, made a "very terrible" mistake while raising their now-adult children. "We made a very, very, very terrible mistake with our children, and we went with radical honesty," Smith said. "But don't do it, I'm not advocating for it, I'm not advocating for it," he continued before explaining what that looked like inside his home. "We made a deal from really young with our kids. The deal was if you tell the truth, you won't get in trouble," he said. However, that parenting strategy didn't work out for Smith the way he had planned. According to Smith, telling his children that they'd never get in trouble if they admitted to making a mistake backfired on him. "Because they do whatever they want and then just come tell you," he added. "It's awful, don't try it. You want your kids to lie, definitely, you don't want to know some of the stuff your kids are thinking of doing." Smith's most recent comments about his children aren't the first time the blockbuster actor has spoken publicly about them. In 2024, the "Hitch" performer opened up about the power of showing more of his vulnerable side to his family. "I think that there is a human elevation that comes out of vulnerability and transparency, and I think that there is a real strength that is acquired through vulnerability," the dad of three said, per PEOPLE. "I absolutely have a warrior's heart. I'm very, very prepared to manage whatever happens in my life. But, with the warrior's heart, the greatest thing you can do, I believe, is you surrender into reality, and you surrender into the difficulty and the hard times." Smith explained that he began putting this into action with his children when he didn't have the perfect solution to an issue they were having. "I've been really practicing it with my children," he added. "I'm finding such a different relationship just in being able to say, 'Hey, I don't know, guys. I'm a partner with you in this situation, and I'm not going to pretend I'm Superman. I love you, son, but I don't know.'" Smith went on to explain the positive shift he saw in his relationship with his children after letting his guard down in front of them. "... because I'm continuing to push, because I'm continuing to work on myself and I'm continuing to try to get my head around this grand mystery... Because I'm continuing to work, my children are gravitating toward me more," he said. He continued, "I'm noticing the struggles that I have, the difficulties that I overcome, the things that I learned. Because I am not stopping, my children are not moving away from me. My children are moving closer to me." According to a previous report from The Blast, Smith's 24-year-old daughter, Willow, has discussed what it was like for her being raised by famous parents growing up, especially how they didn't always acknowledge the "emotional struggle" she faced. "It was rough," she recalled. "I feel like when I was growing up, she [Jada] didn't understand my anxiety. Because she, growing up, had seen her friends die. She had been through so much stuff that, like my issues to her, kind of felt like [smaller]." The "Wait a Minute!" singer later revealed, however, that her relationship with her parents, especially her mother Jada, is now in a healthy space. "Really recently, we had a talk, and she was like, 'I never knew that I actually experienced anxiety,'" she shared. "And she was pushing it down and pushing it down for so many years. Like, she had no idea. So I kind of had to forgive her a little bit for being like, 'Yeah, yeah, yeah. I get it, but like, it's really not that bad.'"

Will Smith Slammed Over New Song: 'He Should Slap Himself For Making This Music'

It seems Will Smith isn't making any new fans with his new music. The "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" just dropped a new single, but some on social media are wishing that he had never released it. Smith is certainly getting the Internet talking with his music video for "Pretty Girls," but maybe not in the way that he had hoped. In the introduction to the song, Smith, with the help of OBanga, lets fans know that he both likes and loves 'pretty girls,' but he gets into the meat of the song, which, as one can probably guess, is about sex. However, the lyrics have become fodder for social media memes, with some questioning the real meaning of 'Five plus five, you a dime tonigh,t' while others took offense at the listing of different 'flavors' of women, with Smith rapping 'vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, lemon.' The music video has also come under scrutiny, from the stark visuals to the decision to open the video with Smith describing a "problem" that he has inside a therapist's office. The music video made its way over to a music Reddit board over the weekend, where many questioned if this was part of Will Smith's planned 'comeback' following the infamous Chris Rock Oscar slap. 'Is this part of the bounce back? Yikes,' one fan commented, while another follower agreed that his new vibe was giving 'Divorced dad core.' 'He should slap himself for making this music,' another reader chimed in while several leaned into the Oscars slap. 'Keep your music out of your mouth!' another shared, prompting another user to add, 'No, let him keep this music in his mouth.' Other users wished that he didn't try to revive his music career at all and stayed out of the spotlight. 'Just go enjoy your money in private, bro,' one user wrote. This prompted a longer response from another netizen, who added, 'All the money in the world and this is what you choose to do with it. The legacy was already tarnished, and now he's trying to set it on fire.' Many on the Internet have been calling the lyrics to the song 'cringe,' while one asked, '5 + 5, you a dime tonight… is he implying he's f-cking two 5s? Therefore, their combined hotness is a ten?' 'That's how it works. Everyone knows that,' another snarked in response. 'Same as two ones make eleven.' 'Would low-key go kinda hard if that was the intention of this corny BS,' another chimed in while another user called his song 'KIDZ BOP for adults.' Other users felt that Smith put so little originality into his work that it could be the product of AI, with one user jokingly claiming that Smith wrote 'make me a generic cr-ppy rap song' into ChatGPT just to see what it wrote. 'Okay, now make it as if it's the worst song you've heard and add sh-ttier lyrics,' another user jokingly added to the 'prompt.' A third played along, adding, 'Okay, now make it sound like the worst of 2008 music and we're almost there.' 'Let's pause here — This request is pushing into territory that violates OpenAI's harmfulness content guidelines. I can't follow any requests that would lead to the creation of music that would be actively harmful to the ears of those who hear it,' another user joked. 'If you'd like, we can write some harmlessly stupid Country music songs instead! It seems that, although he is trying his best, this might not be the comeback that Will Smith was hoping for. As one user bluntly put it: 'I can't wait to never listen to this again.'
