Gary Bettman says NHL-NHLPA talks on a new CBA are 'in really good shape'
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement are progressing well, though there is no timeline on reaching a deal, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh said Wednesday.
Bettman, at his annual state of the league address prior to Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, said the sides are 'having very constructive, professional, cordial dialogue.' Talks did not begin until April, and there is still quite some time until the current CBA expires in September 2026.
'I don't have an announcement to make today that we have a deal, but we have more than a year to go and I think we're in really good shape, having really good discussions,' Bettman said. 'That's a testament to Marty Walsh and Ron Hainsey and people at the Players' Association who have been working tirelessly with us.'
Walsh said the league and union were having good ongoing conversations, adding there are not major issues on the table to quibble over.
'It's moving steady, it's moving forward and I feel good with where we are and we'll see what happens,' Walsh said. 'It gets complicated at certain times, any collective bargaining agreement, but it's not where it was in the past here where you're seeing national disputes between organized labor and companies.'
Hainsey, the NHLPA's assistant executive director, expects the constant meetings to continue during the final in Edmonton and South Florida.
'We're all in the same place at the same time,' Hainsey said. 'There are multiple days in between these games where we can find something for ourselves to do.'
No Russians in Olympics
Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said the league does not expect Russian players to participate in the Olympics next year. That would be status quo for the International Olympic Committee and the International Ice Hockey Federation, which has banned Russian teams since that country's invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.
Walsh said players he has spoken to are disappointed not to be able to participate in Milan, the first Olympics with NHL participation since 2014.
'It's out of their control, and there's not much they can do,' Walsh said. 'There's not much they can do with what's happening in Ukraine and Russia, and they want to play best on best. We hear it all the time. They want to play best on best and we were hoping that by this point in time, the conflict or the war would not be where it is.'
Expansion?
Daly said the league is not engaging in a formal expansion process to go beyond 32 teams, but officials are listening to potential ownership groups about any proposals.
'If somebody wants to essentially apply for an expansion franchise and has all the requisite elements that we would look for in an expansion franchise, we would raise it with the Board of Governors and see if they have any interest in it,' Daly said. 'There are some people we've talked to more than others, but there's a lot of interest, which I think we're gratified with.'

Formation Metals Retains StratExplo to Manage 20,000 Metre Multi-Phase Drill Program for the Advanced N2 Gold Project
VANCOUVER, BC / ACCESS Newswire / June 6, 2025 / Formation Metals Inc. ('Formation' or the 'Company') (CSE:FOMO)(FSE:VF1)(OTC PINK:FOMTF), a North American mineral acquisition and exploration company, is pleased to announce that it has retained Strategy Exploration Advisors ('Stratexplo'), an independent exploration consulting firm based out of Rouyn-Noranda, Québec, as its field operations manager for its planned 20,000 metre multi-phase drill program at its flagship N2 Gold Project ('N2") in Quebec. N2 is an advanced gold project with a global historic resource of ~870,000 ounces comprised of 18 Mt grading 1.4 g/t Au (~809,000 oz Au) across four zones (A, East, RJ-East, and Central)2,3 and 243 Kt grading 7.82 g/t Au (~61,000 oz Au) across the RJ zone2,4 where the Company intends on commencing its maiden 5,000 meter drill program in Summer 2025. The drill program is designed to focus on discovery drilling at new high-potential targets along the mineralization strikes at the 'A', 'RJ' and 'Central' zones in the northern part of the property in order to discover new auriferous trends and unlock new zones of gold mineralization. The program will also focus on high-priority infilling and expansion targets in these zones to significantly enhance the project resource base (Figure 1). Historical highlights from the top two priority zones include: Stratexplo crews will be responsible for conducting surface exploration at N2, including field logistics, sample collection and dispatch, geological mapping and interpretation, exploration targeting and advising as per National Instrument 43-101 collection and reporting guidelines. These responsibilities are in addition to Stratexplo's on-going work as the Company's permitting manager, where they recently facilitated Formation's submission for its Application for Autorisation de Travaux d'exploration à Impacts (ATI) to the Ministère des Ressources naturelles et des Forets (MERN). The ATI submission was completed following discussions with all necessary parties and the Company anticipates receiving its ATI permit within the next 20 to 30 days, after which it intends on commencing its maiden drill program at N2. Deepak Varshney, CEO of Formation Metals, commented: 'We are thrilled to engage StratExplo as part of our team for the N2 Project. They are a top-notch firm that has led several successful programs in the past year, and we are very pleased to have them as part of maiden drill program at N2.' Mr. Varshney continued: 'Given the scale of the property, the compelling geological data, and the Abitibi Greenstone Belt's established history as a hotbed for gold mining, we believe the program designed will deliver our goal of growing N2's historical resource into a near-surface multi-million-ounce deposit. We see the potential for over three million ounces of gold at N2, and our maiden 5,000-metre drilling program will mark the beginning of Formation's pursuit of that goal. Our maiden program will focus on building on the successes of our predecessors. The drilling discoveries made by Agnico-Eagle and Cypress after the initial historic resource estimate show the expansion potential at N2. With gold at almost $4,200, over 4 times the price in 2008 when Agnico last drilled the project, we believe that the timing is perfect for N2 and look forward to a very busy upcoming quarter.' Comprising 87 claims totaling ~4,400 ha within the Abitibi sub province of Northwestern Quebec, Formation's flagship N2 Gold Project is an advanced gold project with a global historic resource of 877,000 ounces: 18.2 Mt grading 1.48 g/t Au (~810,000 oz Au) across four zones (A, East, RJ-East, and Central)2,3 and 243 Kt grading 7.82 g/t Au (~67,000 oz Au) across the RJ zone2,4. There are six primary auriferous mineralized zones in total, each open for expansion along strike and at depth. Compilation and geophysical work by Balmoral Resources Ltd. (now Wallbridge Mining) from 2010 to 2018 generated numerous targets that have not yet been investigated with diamond drilling. There are two primary focuses for Formation: The Company also believes that N2 has significant base metal potential, where it recently completed a revaluation process which revealed significant copper and zinc intercepts within historic drillholes known to have significant gold grades (>1 g/t Au). Assay results range from 200 to 4,750 ppm and 203 ppm to 6,700 ppm, for copper and zinc, respectively, indicating strong potential for elevated base metal (Cu-Zn) concentrations across the property, specifically at the A and RJ zones. Property wide geology at N2 features volcanic and sedimentary rocks formed in regional anticlinal and synclinal flexures. Three principal deformation structures (Figure 1), oriented along the known NW-SE to WNW-ESE structural trends typical of VMS deposits in the Matagami region, function as critical geologic controls for mineralization on the property. For the 2025 exploration season, Formation Metals will concentrate its efforts on the northern part of its N2 Project targeting gold deposit expansion and discovery along identified zones and fault systems associated with the main deformation features (specifically WNW-ESE trend), with IP surveys and drilling planned to model mineralized zones that will eventually contribute to an updated NI-43 101 compliant resource. Formation will also look to further review historic base metal assays from older drill core and undertake additional work in 2025 to assess the property's copper and zinc potential. The Company is also pleased to announce that it has arranged a non-brokered private placement of up to 5,714,285 flow-through units of the Company ('Units') at a price of $0.35 per Unit to raise aggregate gross proceeds of up to $2,000,000 (the 'Private Placement'). Each Unit will consist of one flow-through common share (each a 'FT Share') of the Company, and each FT Share shall qualify as a 'flow-through share' as defined in section 66(15) of the Income Tax Act (Canada), and one transferable common share purchase warrant (each a 'Warrant'), with each Warrant entitling the holder to purchase one additional common share (a 'Warrant Share') at an exercise price of $0.60 per Warrant Share for a period of two (2) years from the date of closing of the Private Placement. The Company may pay finders' fees to eligible finders, in accordance with applicable securities laws and the policies of the Canadian Securities Exchange ('CSE'). The Private Placement is subject to approval of the CSE, and all securities issued under the Private Placement will be subject to statutory hold periods expiring four months and one day from the date of closing of the Private Placement. The Company intends to use the net proceeds from the Private Placement for exploration on its N2 Property located in Quebec. Amid AI-Fueled Growth, AVGO Stock's Valuation Raises Concern
CANADA - 2025/01/06: In this photo illustration, the Broadcom company logo is seen displayed on a ... More smartphone screen. (Photo Illustration by Thomas Fuller/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images) Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) announced robust results for the second quarter of fiscal 2025 (ending in October), exceeding consensus estimates for both revenue and earnings. The company reported $15.0 billion in revenue, a 20% year-over-year increase, and adjusted earnings of $1.58 per share, up 44% year-over-year. These figures slightly surpassed analyst expectations of $14.97 billion and $1.57, respectively. This growth was primarily fueled by strong demand for Broadcom's AI semiconductor solutions and contributions from VMware. AI revenue alone surged by 46% year-over-year to over $4.4 billion in Q2, driven by robust demand for AI networking. Alongside impressive sales growth, the company's adjusted EBITDA margin significantly expanded by 700 basis points year-over-year, reaching 66.7% in Q2. Broadcom's outlook for Q3 also appears promising, with anticipated sales of $15.8 billion, slightly ahead of the $15.7 billion consensus. The company expects growth in AI semiconductor revenue to accelerate to $5.1 billion in Q3, with an adjusted EBITDA margin of at least 66%. Despite these solid results, AVGO stock saw a 4% decline in after-market trading on Thursday, June 5. This dip can partly be attributed to the stock's already high valuation. The question for investors is whether to buy AVGO stock at its current price of around $250. This is a tricky decision. While the stock appears attractive, its high valuation makes it particularly susceptible to adverse events, leading to potential volatility. Our analysis, which compares AVGO's current valuation to its recent operating performance and financial health, suggests minimal underlying concerns. Broadcom exhibits a very strong operating performance and financial condition across key parameters, including growth, profitability, financial stability, and downturn resilience. However, if you seek upside with less volatility than a single stock, consider the High-Quality portfolio, which has outperformed the S&P 500 and achieved returns greater than 91% since inception. Separately, see – Is Amazon Stock Still A Buy After Its Recent 25% Rally? Going by what you pay per dollar of sales or profit, AVGO stock looks very expensive compared to the broader market. Broadcom's Revenues have grown considerably over recent years. Broadcom's profit margins are much higher than most companies in the Trefis coverage universe. Broadcom's balance sheet looks strong. AVGO stock has fared worse than the benchmark S&P 500 index during some of the recent downturns. While investors have their fingers crossed for a soft landing by the U.S. economy, how bad can things get if there is another recession? Our dashboard How Low Can Stocks Go During A Market Crash captures how key stocks fared during and after the last six market crashes. In summary, Broadcom's performance across the parameters detailed above is as follows: - Growth: Extremely Strong - Profitability: Very Strong - Financial Stability: Strong - Downturn Resilience: Neutral - Overall: Strong Even though the stock has performed strongly in the parameters discussed, its extremely high valuation supports our conclusion that AVGO is a tricky stock to buy. We think investors would likely be better off waiting for a further dip before picking AVGO stock. Notably, the average analyst price estimate of $254 also suggests that the stock does not have significant room for growth. Of course, we could be wrong, and investors may continue to assign even higher valuation multiples to AVGO stock given its position in the AI boom. Sometimes, valuations take a back seat when investors get eager about the outlook. In fact, evaluating valuation contextually is just one of many approaches we take when constructing the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio. This portfolio, with a collection of 30 stocks, has a track record of comfortably outperforming the S&P 500 over the last four years. This is because, as a group, HQ Portfolio stocks have provided better returns with less risk compared to the benchmark index, offering a less volatile investment experience, as evident in the HQ Portfolio's performance metrics.
