Portland man convicted of ‘horrific' sex abuse of 2 preschool-aged girls

PORTLAND, Ore. () — A Portland man was found guilty of 58 counts of sex abuse involving two child victims over several years, authorities said.
A jury found Rafael Gonzalez-Rodirguez Jr. guilty of the charges which include multiple instances of rape and sex abuse, the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office said.

The two girls were 5-6 years old when the sexual abuse began and lasted for years until they disclosed it to close friends and neighbors in September 2023. Gonzalez-Rodirguez was the former boyfriend of the victims' mother, prosecutors said.
Once the children spoke out about being abused, there was an immediate response from the Department of Human Services, Child Protective Services, and a cross-report to law enforcement. Shortly thereafter, the victims detailed the history of abuse they endured while under the care of CARES NW.
Gonzalez-Rodirguez Jr. was convicted on six counts of first-degree rape, 21 counts of first-degree sex abuse, multiple counts of first-degree sodomy, second-degree sex abuse, third-degree sex abuse, and third-degree sodomy.
Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Rachna Hajari called the case a 'horrific' instance of child abuse and a sobering reminder during National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April.
Has Oregon's unemployment reached a turning point?
'What happened to these victims at the hands of the defendant was unimaginable. Though the trauma of the sexual abuse will be a part of their lives forever, I hope these convictions and the jury believing the victims will bring them some comfort on their journey of healing and recovery,' Hajari said.
While Gonzalez-Rodirguez Jr. faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years in prison, the DA's office said they are asking the court to impose a lengthier sentence in this case.

‘Senseless ambush' kills mom of 5 at drum circle, OR reports say. Man convicted

A man has been convicted in a 'senseless ambush' that killed a woman at a drum circle event in Oregon, officials said. Wyatt Storm Belcher, 28, was found guilty of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon in Ash Smith's death following a jury trial, the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office said in a June 6 news release. McClatchy News reached out to Belcher's attorney June 9 and was awaiting a response. The shooting happened May 8, 2022, near the Willamette River in Portland, prosecutors said. The drum circle gathering began to break up, and 'multiple witnesses heard a loud bang and saw Ash Smith fall to the ground,' according to prosecutors. Multiple witnesses gave statements to police, prosecutors said, 'including descriptions of the person who shot Ms. Smith.' Belcher matched the descriptions and was found nearby, according to prosecutors, who said he had 'a .40 caliber Glock 23 holstered in his waistband.' Belcher and Smith were strangers to one another, KOIN reported, citing police. Smith, 31, was described in an online obituary as 'loving, energetic, and a true warrior.' The mom of five 'continuously fought for her place in this world, despite being given a bad hand time and time again' and she 'had an infectious laugh and was always a source of positivity, seeing the good in anybody,' the obituary said. In the news release, Deputy District Attorney Devin Franklin said, 'Ash Smith was truly an innocent victim. While she didn't deserve Wyatt Belcher's senseless ambush, she did deserve the compassion that the witnesses on scene showed her during her final moment. Three of those individuals had the strength to testify during this trial despite being deeply and personally affected by what they witnessed.' A sentencing hearing is scheduled June 9, according to online court records.

Woman arrested after school staff report suspected child abuse

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A woman has been arrested after staff at a local charter school suspected a child may have been abused and alerted authorities. According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), staff members at the school contacted police around 10:35 a.m. on Thursday, June 5, with their concerns. Officers responded to conduct an initial investigation, and the Crimes Against Children and Forensic Interview Units then responded. CSPD said detectives established probable cause to arrest 29-year-old Lizbeth Salinas Mijangos for felony child abuse. The Department of Human Services responded to the home on South Chelton Road to ensure the safety of children in the home. 'CSPD would like to express appreciation for the staff members who noticed that something was wrong and who were diligent enough to report it,' CSPD said. Anyone with concerns for a child's welfare should report suspected child abuse to CSPD at (719) 444-7000, or the Child Abuse Hotline at 844-CO-4-KIDS (844-264-5437).
