Mum left "close to death" after terrifying heart attack on cycle with kids

A mum was close to death after suffering a heart attack while cycling with her children in the Cairngorms.
Steph Smith was enjoying a day out at the Glenlivet Mountain Bike Trail Centre in Tomintoul, Moray, during the Easter holidays with her husband Nick and their two daughters, aged 17 and 14.
The teacher, from Aberdeenshire, began to feel unwell as she tried to keep up with her eldest daughter.
She managed to get herself off the trail before falling unconscious and woke up to find she was surrounded by people.
The 51-year-old said: "I was trying to keep up with my eldest daughter on the trails when I suddenly felt really ill.
'My eyesight became blurry, and I knew I was going to pass out.
"A member of staff from the centre arrived on a quad bike and I believe he called 999.
'That's roughly when the pain in my chest started. It then radiated down to my elbows, and I couldn't feel my hands or open my eyes … It was unbearable.
'I couldn't move, my arms and legs felt so heavy, and I knew it wasn't going to be possible for me to get myself up.'
An ambulance arrived at the scene and paramedics carried out an ECG test which indicated a problem with Steph's heart. She was transported to meet with another ambulance, where she received pain relief.
Steph needed urgent medical attention but the journey by road to the nearest hospital would take over an hour and a half.

Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) was swiftly called in and paramedics told the mum-of-two she was having a heart attack.
She was flown to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in just 15 minutes and taken away for emergency surgery to have a stent fitted.
She continued: "The SCAA paramedics had warned me that when we arrived at ARI lots of people would swarm me.
'When we landed, I got wheeled quickly into surgery in a big hurry.
'I had a stent fitted to fix a block in my right coronary artery. The whole operation was complete in 45 minutes, and I was allowed to go home after three days.
'I heard from the cardiologist the following day that I had had a lucky escape, but I eventually found out just how close I had been to dying.'
Steph, who is now an ardent supporter and volunteer for SCAA, shared her emotional story at the launch of the charity's Operation Skyward, where she was reunited with the crew and aircraft that saved her life that day.
She added: 'It's important for me that others get the same opportunity I did – for SCAA to reach more people in time.
'I didn't expect to nearly die on a hillside in Glenlivet at the age of 51, that wasn't part of my plan. My life was hanging in the balance.
' Thank you is not enough but that's all I can say. It's a debt I can never repay.'

So, with Brits scrambling to spot and prevent infestations, bedroom furnishings experts are warning homeowners to watch for an unusual almond-like smell which could be a telltale sign of a significant bed bug infestation. Bed bugs are small, wingless insects that feed on human blood and are typically found around beds to stay close to their food source. Norman Smith, Director and owner of Invicta Environmental, a pest control company said this distinctive odour is often missed by people looking for more obvious signs like bites or spotting the insects themselves. He said: "When bed bugs have established themselves in large numbers, they release pheromones that create a musty, sweet almond smell. Many people don't connect this smell with bedbugs and might search for other causes like damp." Bed bugs are believed to be masters of hiding and can be very difficult to spot. Norman added: "Most people think they'll easily see bed bugs crawling around, but they're incredibly sneaky insects. Their flat bodies allow them to hide in the tiniest cracks and seams of mattresses, bed frames, and furniture." The small insects have evolved to be particularly evasive, only emerging to feed when humans are deeply asleep and less likely to disturb them. Norman said: "Bed bugs typically feed for two to five minutes before retreating back to their hiding places. This usually happens between 2am and 5am when people are in their deepest sleep stage." The bedroom expert also highlighted another unusual sign - rust-colored stains on sheets and mattresses which aren't always connected to bed bugs. According to Norman, people often mistake these small brownish stains for dirt or other marks, but they're actually bed bug droppings. He added that finding blood spots on sheets is another significant indicator. Saying: "After feeding, bedbugs can leave small blood spots behind. These aren't usually from the bite itself, but from the bedbug being squashed if you roll over in your sleep." Unusual bite patterns can also help identify a bed bug problem. Norman said: "If you notice bites in a straight line or clustered in a small area, this could be bed bugs. It's sometimes called the 'breakfast, lunch, and dinner' pattern because if a bed bug gets disturbed while feeding, it will move a short distance and try again." The bedroom furnishings specialist stressed that prompt action is critical for tackling bed bug problems as bed bugs reproduce extremely rapidly - a female can lay approximately 200 eggs in just five days. This means a small problem can quickly become a major infestation if not addressed immediately. For those concerned about a possible infestation, Norman advised: "Strip the bed completely and check all seams and piping of the mattress. Don't forget to inspect the bed frame, particularly in corners and joints. Bed bugs can hide in the smallest cracks - as thin as a credit card."

Parents have been warned after a popular summer kids toy - sold on Amazon - was recalled over fears it could pose 'serious risk of injuries' due to 'accessible magnets with a magnetic flux index' A popular children's toy sold on Amazon has been recalled over fears it could pose a "serious risk of injuries". Parents have been warned not to let their kids use a specific plaything, previously available from the major online retailer. The Soppycid Reusable Water Balloons have since been removed from the website after the product recall - following fears around the safety of the items. The toy posed a safety risk because "it contains accessible magnets with a magnetic flux index that exceeds the acceptable level", according to the item's risk description. The water balloons were available to buy in a pack of six and retailed for £18. The risk description also said: "Small, high-powered magnetic products can easily be swallowed and, when ingested, have the potential to cause serious internal injuries within the gastrointestinal tract. The product also requires improvement to marking, labelling and documentation." The Office for Product Safety and Standards listed the recall and said the toys were sold via Fruggo. It said: "The product has been recalled from end users. The listings have been removed by the online marketplace (Fruugo)." It added that these toys did not meet the regulations of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011. The toy was described as a "bag of colourful reusable water balloons, sealed with magnets" and the country of origin was said to be China. This comes two months after Easter toys sold at Home Bargains were urgently recalled due to concerns they could cause children "to choke". The retailer urged shoppers who bought the Happy Easter plush toys to return the product to stores. The company's website stated that the product, distributed by TJ Morris Ltd and sold in their stores, posed a "serious asphyxiation risk". This was due to the internal fibrous stuffing material - which could easily be accessed by kids because the stitching around the toy was weak. The toys were available in three variations – a yellow chick, a pink rabbit, and a white rabbit – and were all removed from sale. The affected toys had the barcode 10811016. Toys haven't been the only items hit with product recalls recently. Lidl was forced to pull a popular protein bar from shelves due to health fears. The Cookies & Cream Protein Bars, made by Healthy Fit, were removed from stores in Northern Ireland because they contained milk and soya. These items, which are common allergens, were not declared in English on the label. This therefore posed a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents, and/or an allergy to soya.

Cheese factory 'chemical spill' leaves 17 people injured as hazard team respond
Emergency services were called to the site after the alarm was raised in the early hours of Saturday, June 7. A major incident was sparked following a suspected chemical spill at an industrial site in Northern Ireland. Emergency services were called to Leprino, a cheese factory near Magheralin in County Down, after the alarm was raised in the early hours of Saturday, June 7. The fire service were called to the scene alongside police, ambulance crews and a Hazardous Area Response Team. Following the incident 17 patients were treated. Five of those were taken to the hospital for treatment, although their conditions are not believed to be life-threatening. A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service spokesperson told Belfast Live: "NIAS received reports of a potential chemical incident at an industrial site near Magheralin and dispatched a number of emergency ambulances, ambulance officers, a Hazardous Area Response Team and a doctor to the scene with a major incident being declared as a result of the number of reported casualties. "17 potential patients were assessed and five transferred to hospital (Craigavon Area Hospital, RVH and Daisy Hill) though none are thought to be in a life-threatening condition. "A further 12 patients were monitored and then discharged from the scene. "NIAS worked alongside colleagues from NIFRS and PSNI to manage the incident.
