Live: Funeral Tuesday for 16-month-old Maddy after tragic death at Lenoir daycare
LENOIR, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — On Tuesday, the community of Lenoir is gathering to say goodbye to 16-month-old Madolyn 'Maddy' Amara-Serenity Mitchell.
Her funeral is being held on Tuesday afternoon, just over a week after the toddler's sudden and heartbreaking death on her very first day at Creative Beginnings daycare.
The service, set for 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Waterlife Church, is expected to draw loved ones, neighbors, and members of a grieving community.

Court documents and a 911 call released last week revealed the desperate efforts of daycare workers after finding Maddy unresponsive. CPR was attempted. Emergency services were called. But by 3:19 p.m. on May 19, Maddy was gone.
Alexandra Lee Coffey, a 29-year-old employee at the daycare, is now facing felony involuntary manslaughter charges in connection with the case. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has since ordered the immediate shutdown of Creative Beginnings.
Past violations at the daycare point to unsafe sleep practices and inadequate staff training.
Tuesday, though, will not be about investigations or court dates. It's about a little girl who was described 'as a ray of sunshine,' a child who loved Minnie Mouse, toy ducks, and her big brothers. Born on Christmas Day, family says Maddy was a gift.

Previously convicted Burke County man accused of carrying six guns, one allegedly stolen: Sheriff
MORGANTON, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A previously convicted Burke County man is charged with a string of felonies after six firearms were reportedly discovered in his vehicle over the weekend. On Sunday, June 1, deputies with the Burke County Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop on a Jeep Cherokee, claiming it was displaying a fictitious license plate. The driver was identified as 34-year-old Tyler Dwayne South, who had an outstanding order for arrest for failure to appear in Mitchell County. According to the sheriff's office, a vehicle search resulted in the following items allegedly being seized: Six firearms with ammunition, 16 grams of fentanyl, 1 gram of methamphetamine, Alprazolam tablets, Marijuana, and Drug paraphernalia. Deputies say one of the firearms seized had been reported stolen. South was arrested and charged with: Felony Possession of Methamphetamine, Felony Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Felony Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon, Felony Trafficking Fentanyl, Felony Possession with Intent to Sell a Schedule II Controlled Substance, and Three misdemeanor drug offenses A citation was also issued to South for operating a motor vehicle while displaying a fictitious license plate. South was given a $250,000 secured bond, and his first appearance was scheduled for June 2, at the Burke County Courthouse. Thats' when he was further charged with a felony probation violation, resulting in an additional $50,000 secured bond. The outstanding Order for Arrest from Mitchell County was also served. Suspect wanted after causing $400k of damages while attempting to steal airplanes from Foothills Regional Airport: Sheriff
MORGANTON, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Burke County officials are looking for an individual accused of causing thousands of dollars in damages to airplanes at Foothills Regional Airport. On May 26, deputies and NC State Highway Patrol responded to a reported breaking and entering at the airport. Surveillance video captured a white or silver/gray SUV, possibly a Jeep Grand Cherokee, pulling up to the airport around 8:39 p.m. A white man, around 30 to 40 years old, was seen exiting the vehicle. He was seen wearing light-colored pants, a dark shirt, dark boots, a dark baseball cap and carrying a small military-style backpack with MOLLE webbing. Officials say he attempted to steal multiple aircraft out of an airplane hangar. Although he was unsuccessful, the attempt caused an estimated $400,000 in damages to several airplanes, according to the aircraft owners. The investigation remains ongoing.
