Five Covid cases in Trichy city; mask up, say doctors
Trichy: Five Covid cases have been detected in Trichy in the past few days. While one patient was discharged on Monday, two others are receiving treatment at a private hospital, and two are in home isolation.
Sources said that the four patients currently under care are stable and are being closely monitored. Among those admitted are a 77-year-old male and a 66-year-old male, both with comorbidities. Although the 66-year-old, who has COPD, is in the ICU, he is not on ventilator support. The 77 year old with comorbidities like diabetes, hypertension and coronary artery disease while not on ICU is being given oxygen support.
Authorities said no specific travel history could be established for these cases.
Meanwhile, Trichy, home to one of the busiest international airports in Tamil Nadu with flights arriving from several countries affected by the new wave of Covid-19, has been directed to increase screening and surveillance. "The district health department has directed the airport health team to increase screening for passengers with symptoms, especially those with travel history from affected countries," a source said.
Currently, a staff doctor, a staff nurse, and a health inspector stationed at the airport for monkeypox screenings will also conduct Covid screenings.
Additionally, Trichy MGMGH hospital has allocated a 12-bed special ward near the Mpox ward to manage Covid emergencies. This hospital was a key govt facility in the region for treating Covid-19 cases and had expanded its bed capacity from 10 to 500 during the peak last time.
Officials say there is no reason for people to panic but people should stick to precautionary measures like masking up in a crowded place, while the hospitals are doing their bit to be prepared for any eventuality.
"It's a subvariant of Omicron, and with people vaccinated, it will be handled better. It may not escalate into something as serious as before. There have been no alarming instances of fever or flu clusters despite the fluctuating climate as well this season. However, people—especially those with comorbidities or older adults—should wear masks as a precaution in crowded places. Otherwise, there is nothing alarming in the situation," a senior health official told TOI.

Roll back fee hike for medical courses: IMA
Ahmedabad: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) wrote a letter to chief minister on Tuesday, requesting a reversal of the recently approved fee for govt and self-financed medical courses. "The hike for govt quota and management quota is 10% to 12%, which has become an issue of concern for the parents and students," read the letter. "In the interest of the students and medical fraternity at large, we request you to immediately revoke the hike as a positive solution to the problem." Last year, the fee regulatory committee, which typically sets fees for self-financed institutions on a three-year basis, established fees for just one year due to post-Covid adjustments. The committee indicated that fees for the subsequent two years would be determined after reviewing the financial records of colleges. The committee has now formally declared an average fee increase of 12%, attributing this to inflation and financial assessments. Despite the committee's position that the increase is essential for maintaining operations at self-financed colleges, the letter signed by IMA Gujarat president Dr Mehul Shah and secretary Dr Gargi Patel contends that this considerable rise in yearly fees will create significant financial strain for students and their families.

MBBS, BDS application forms to be available from June 6
Application forms for admission to state quota seats in MBBS and BDS programmes will open up on June 6, Health Minister M. Subramanian announced on Wednesday. The Minister held a consultation with the heads of private and government medical and dental colleges. The admission process would commence early to enable scrutiny of the applications diligently. In the previous years the government had waited until the declaration of NEET and as a result there was not much time to scrutinise the applications, resulting in errors, he explained. Candidates must include their NEET registration number while filling in the applications. The final merit list will, however, be based on the results provided by the National Testing Agency. Candidates have been given the opportunity to wait till the declaration of NEET results. Such candidates must apply within five days of declaration of NEET results, the medical education has decided. Mr. Subramanian has instructed private medical and dental colleges to be transparent about the fee structure, giving a break up of the various components, such as tuition and hostel fees and any other amount that is being collected. Earlier in the day the Minister launched training programmes for health care workers. There is no reason to panic over COVID 19 infection, health minister M. Subramanian said here on Wednesday. Until Tuesday 216 persons have been diagnosed with COVID-19 infection and they are getting better. Those who have been infected are being monitored, the minister said. To remain safe people have been advised to wear masks in crowded places to avoid contracting infections. A person who has been diagnosed with COVID 19 infection and dies is tested for various other parameters as well to identify the cause of death. 'We do all the investigations including for COVID 19. The person may have died of other underlying causes and COVID 19 infection may have been an incidental finding,' health department officials said at a media briefing here on Wednesday on the sidelines of launch of training programme for health workers in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and fatty liver disease. The field workers will raise awareness about the diseases and those who have them would be urged to get screened at primary health centres. The health department has also planned to launch 'Nalam Kakkum Stalin' in a fortnight in Chennai, the Minister announced. Under the scheme people can seek master health check-ups nearer to home. At the camps people can also get the required persons with disabilities certificates, persons can also get their cards under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. Across the state 1,256 camps will be held by December-end.

Tiruchi Corporation to establish a college, says K. N. Nehru
Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru on Wednesday said Tiruchi Corporation would establish a college on a five-acre land in the city. Inaugurating new Corporation school buildings here, the Minister also disclosed that a model school would be established at Woraiyur in the city and urged Minister for School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi to establish government schools in the west constituency as there were only Corporation and private schools in the area. Later, Mr. Nehru told reporters that the integrated bus terminus at Panjapur would become operational after the tender for the annual maintenance contract was awarded. Asked about COVID-19 preparedness at schools, Mr. Poyyamozhi said the current strain of the virus was not severe. School students would be advised to wear face masks if necessary. The Ministers inaugurated a model higher secondary school at Edamalaipattipudur in Ward 57 and an additional building for Corporation Middle School at Piratiyur in Ward 55. The model school building has been constructed on a 2.91-acre site in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar at an estimate of ₹18.41 crore. The ground floor and first floor of the building will house 36 classrooms, two staff rooms, two office rooms, a library, three laboratories, and four sanitary facilities. Similarly, the Corporation Middle School at Piratiyur, which is functioning in a two-storey building with 10 classrooms, has 801 students. Considering the increase in enrolments, an additional building was constructed at an outlay of ₹4.90 crore under the Corporation's Education Fund. The three-storey building features 12 classrooms, two staff rooms, an office room, eight toilets and 12 urinals. With the additional building, around 540 would be benefitted, a press release said. Textbooks, school bags and uniforms were distributed to the students. Collector M. Pradeep Kumar, Mayor M. Anbazhagan, Corporation Commissioner V. Saravanan, Member of the Parliament K.N. Arun Nehru, Chief Educational Officer G. Krishnapriya and others were present.
