DBKL vows to take action against illegal traders
THREE hotels in Kuala Lumpur were sealed this year for failing to comply with the local authority's regulations, says mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif.
She was underscoring the point that there was no favouritism involved as Kuala Lumpur City Hall's (DBKL) enforcement was applied across the board, from stalls to hotels.
Speaking at an appreciation gathering organised by Batu Road Retailers Association (Barra) and Masjid India Business Association (Miba) at Sogo Kuala Lumpur, Maimunah said issues raised by the associations, especially those related to illegal traders, were taken seriously.
This was in response to complaints by Miba president Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin regarding the challenges faced by local traders.
Ameer had highlighted several concerns, including unlicensed businesses operated by foreign workers, illegal traders, bazaars blocking access to established businesses, and persistent parking issues due to illegal or double parking.
'These issues have significantly affected long-time traders in the Masjid India area,' he said.
He urged the mayor to address the influx of foreign workers operating illegally in areas such as Jalan Silang.
'The Home Ministry has stated that only 15% of employees in certain sectors can be foreigners.
'Based on this, enforcement should be carried out at premises that are entirely run by foreigners,' he said.
'We need to support our small businesses. Many of us – like Mydin, Sogo and Giant – started small before growing bigger,' said Ameer.
He further said that 99% of shops operated by foreigners failed to comply with local product labelling regulations, especially for imported items.
These, he suggested, were areas where DBKL could step up enforcement.
Ameer also called on DBKL to act against the so-called 'drinks syndicate' operating at Jalan Chow Kit and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, allegedly run by 80% foreign vendors without licences.
He urged authorities to assist local street food vendors by relocating them to proper sites so that they did not obstruct other businesses.
Meanwhile, Barra founder and Malaysia Retailers Association president Datuk Andrew Lim expressed hope that the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign would attract both local and international tourists to areas such as Batu Road and Masjid India.
Maimunah thanked the business community for its cooperation and said DBKL would adopt an integrated enforcement approach in collaboration with the relevant bodies.
'I will visit Jalan Silang personally to assess the situation.
'In Chow Kit, enforcement has already taken place. One of the former mayors was impressed by the approach we took.
'I work closely with my officers, especially ground staff. I value their feedback because they are on the frontlines,' she added.
Regarding parking issues, Maimunah said DBKL had towed many vehicles and she met with Rapid KL officials to discuss strategies to reduce traffic congestion.

Selamat datang to more UK guests

Opening gong: Ahmad Zahid launching Visit Malaysia 2026 in London. LONDON: Malaysia is eyeing the arrival of more than 500,000 visitors from the United Kingdom for Visit Malaysia 2026, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister said the United Kingdom remains one of Malaysia's strongest European markets. Last year, 390,035 travellers from the United Kingdom visited Malaysia, contributing over RM2.5bil in visitor receipts. 'We are grateful for this continued support and I am confident that for Visit Malaysia 2026, we will surpass the target of 500,000 arrivals,' he said during his speech at the launch of Visit Malaysia 2026. Ahmad Zahid said the launch in London, known for its vibrant hub of culture, trade and travel, would allow those in the city to rediscover Malaysia in all its colours, charm and diversity. 'Tourism is more than an economic activity; I see it as a bridge of hearts. It brings people together, creates memories and builds understanding. 'Today, we reaffirm that bridge and we commit to strengthening it even further,' he added. Ahmad Zahid said Malaysia's tourism sector has shown extraordinary resilience and growth, with 38 million international arrivals and RM106.78bil in tourist receipts recorded in 2024. Between January and April alone, Malaysia recorded 13.4 million international arrivals, marking a 21% increase compared to the same period last year, he noted. He said at a recent Tourism and Culture Cabinet Committee meeting which he chaired, the government had approved 103 new international routes, 29 additional frequencies and five charter flights, all in preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026. 'I believe these routes are more than just infrastructure; they are gateways to opportunities for travellers, operators and investors alike. 'It's a signal to the world that Malaysia is ready to welcome, to connect and to collaborate. 'We're laying the groundwork now so that by the time Visit Malaysia 2026 starts, every journey to Malaysia feels seamless, inspiring and worth repeating,' he added. The Deputy Prime Minister said that Visit Malaysia 2026 is not just another promotional campaign but is a national agenda that is forward-looking to position tourism at the heart of Malaysia's economic and cultural growth. 'This campaign is our collective invitation to the world, built on shared values and inspired by new possibilities,' he said. At a press conference, Ahmad Zahid said efforts would be made to intensify promotions of Malaysia's hidden gems ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026. He said feedback from tourism industry players in London revealed that Malaysia has not fully tapped into promoting its hidden gems to boost visitor arrivals, such as the attractions in Sabah and Sarawak. Ahmad Zahid noted that there remains an opportunity to adjust tourism marketing and promotional strategies, given that Visit Malaysia 2026 is about seven months away. He said the government would also look into offering incentives for travellers who use Malaysia-based airlines to stop over in the country following feedback from industry players.

Govt mulls housing above train stations to ease congestion

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government is reviewing a proposal to build housing projects above railway stations to help ease traffic congestion. The plan is being studied with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), and regulatory amendments are in progress. "This means the (public housing) project would be built above (the railway station). It will include commercial housing.... not all units will be public housing, but some of them will be. This are among the measures that will be taken (to ease traffic congestion)," he said at the Ilmuan Malaysia Madani forum hosted by the Higher Education Ministry. Also present at the forum were Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Prasarana Malaysia Bhd president and group chief executive officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah and Universiti Putra Malaysia vice-chancellor Datuk Professor Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah. Anwar also addressed the construction of vertical schools under the Kota Madani development, saying they will follow strict safety standards and improved designs. "In Kota Madani Putrajaya, vertical schools will indeed be introduced, and parking will be underground. The residential level will be a proper garden, while the school will be located above. If a school has a lift, it will be dedicated for school use only. So, one can walk from level 14 down to the kindergarten or school, but the construction will be subject to strict conditions," he said. He said the Kota Madani project in Penang will involve 10,000 housing units in Seberang Jaya and Batu Kawan, in South and Central Seberang Perai respectively. "This will include vertical schools, fire stations, and clinics all within the vicinity, so people won't have to bear transportation costs. Otherwise, the MRT won't be viable as people won't use it. This can help reduce the burden on public transportation," he said. Meanwhile, Loke said his ministry and the Ministry of Housing and Local Government are reviewing a plan to reduce or remove parking spaces in flats near railway stations. He said the plan requires policy amendments and has not yet been finalised.

Malaysia sets sights on 500,000 UK tourists for VM2026, says Ahmad Zahid

LONDON — Malaysia is targeting 500,000 tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom (UK) as part of the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He expressed optimism that the target can be met, citing a significant increase in the number of tourists from the UK during the first four months of this year. He is confident that this upward trend will continue. 'I am satisfied with the efforts carried out by Tourism Malaysia in London, especially regarding the goal of attracting 500,000 tourists from the United Kingdom. I am confident that this target can be achieved,' he said at a press conference following the launch of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) here on Tuesday. Earlier, Ahmad Zahid participated in a tourism roundtable session with key players from the UK tourism industry. During the session, he said that there is a proposal to create a special package for tourists flying with Malaysian Airlines, offering stopover incentives to encourage them to spend time in Kuala Lumpur or other destinations in Peninsular Malaysia. 'I have agreed to bring this proposal to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and present it to the Cabinet so that the package can be implemented by 2026. 'Malaysia Airlines had previously offered a similar package with considerable success, so we are optimistic that the suggestion from the Malaysia Airlines manager in London can be adopted and implemented,' he said. In his opening remarks, Ahmad Zahid noted that in 2024, 390,035 travellers from the UK visited Malaysia, contributing over RM2.5 billion in visitor receipts. He also highlighted that Malaysia has approved 103 new international routes, 29 additional flight frequencies, and five charter flights. 'All in preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026. I believe these routes represent more than just infrastructure -they are gateways to opportunities for travellers, operators, and investors alike,' he said . — BERNAMA
