Roughriders training camp: Green and White Day set for Saskatoon

The Riders will get to show their stuff once again in a controlled scrimmage setting, when the annual Green and White Day takes place Saturday afternoon at Saskatoon's SMF Field as the team prepares for its upcoming pre-season games.

For Rider fans, it's a chance to get a glimpse of the Green and White squad ahead of its first pre-season match, May 24, against the Blue Bombers in Winnipeg.

'If they haven't had a chance to come out and catch practice, there's been a lot of big plays happening out this way. It's a chance for our fan base to get closer to the team, see them in live action and see how we're going.'

Gates at SMF Field will open at 1 p.m., with the scrimmage set to begin at 3 p.m., followed by an autograph session.

Prior to the game, Rider play-by-play announcer Dave Thomas will host a panel discussion, starting at 1:45 p.m., in the Gordie Howe Sports Complex main hall with Mace, president and CEO Craig Reynolds and vice-president of football operations/general manager Jeremy O'Day.

Off-field activities include performances from the Rider cheer team, the Rider Pep Band and Gainer the Gopher, along with face-painting, inflatables, music and games.

The Riders will hold the event after six days of main camp in Saskatoon, where wild-fire smoke rolled into town Thursday morning.

A year ago, the Riders proceeded with their Green and White Day despite smoke in the air, although they kept the scrimmage short and sweet.

While the team also cut their practice short Thursday, Mace has been happy with all facets as camp has progressed.

'I'm really excited about how our offence is moving the ball and the run game,' said Mace, who enters his second season as head coach. 'All of our quarterbacks are seeing it real nice and our receivers are running great routes. Defensively, (while) throwing a little more on their plate and how they're handling that, it looks really good. The standard we have for causing and creating turnovers, those are still there.'

'I can say anything I want (but) he's got a standard for himself,' Mace says of Milligan. 'It's crazy or not, but he's not complacent with what he's done last year. He identified a few things he wanted to work on this off-season, and you've seen it translate already in camp. So for Ro, the sky's the limit, man.

After nearly a month getting to know his team at training camp in Kamloops, B.C., Pierce believes what could set his team apart this season is their competitive spirit. 'Ever since training camp got here, they're pushing each other. I think when you look at the way they interact, the way they communicate, they're really doing a good job of talking to each other, putting themselves in positions to be successful,' the coach said. 'Everybody's talented at this level. And we have talented guys, just like everybody else. That's what I keep talking to them about — what are we willing to do that other teams aren't willing to do? If you want to be successful, you've got to put the work in. And I'm proud of this group because they're workers.' B.C. also made changes to its front office in December, elevating Ryan Rigmaiden from assistant general manager to general manager. He responded with a series of off-season moves, including dealing veteran QB Vernon Adams Jr. to the Calgary Stampeders, signing former Toronto Argonaut Dejon Allen to add size and toughness to the offensive line in free agency, and bringing running back James Butler back into the fold following two seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The current group is a good mix of young talent and veteran leaders, said Peters, who's heading into his 10th season with the Lions. 'Every year, everybody thinks their team is going to go to the Grey Cup. And it's no different this year for us,' he said. 'But just us going through the process and focusing more on the details, the details are the most important thing. What we learned about the Ottawa Redblacks in their 2025 CFL season opener
The Ottawa Redblacks wasted absolutely no time in carrying over one of their worst habits from last year into their 2025 CFL season opener. Article content When quarterback Dru Brown was inexcusably called for a time-count violation before the first snap from scrimmage, it was not only a harbinger of things to come on Thursday night at Regina's Mosaic Stadium, but also a reminder of a problem that plagued them through the majority of the 2024 campaign. Article content Article content Article content In the 31-26 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Ottawa gifted the home team more than the length of a football field's worth of free turf by taking a total of 12 penalties for 126 yards. Article content Article content 'We've got to be more disciplined,' linebacker Adarius Pickett told TSN1200's AJ Jakubec in a media scrum after the game. 'Even special teams-wise, (the offence) was starting with bad field position. Article content 'We've got to address that,' Pickett added about the downpour of flags. 'We've definitely got to watch the film and see exactly what was transpiring to get those penalties. I know it kind of seemed like it was one-sided, but it is what it is at times when playing on the road, and we've got to expect that. We've got to be more disciplined in practice, making sure that we practice the right way so we can play the right way in the game.' Article content Article content Sound familiar? It should. Article content Last season, the Redblacks led the CFL in penalty yards with 1,357 (75.38 yards per game) while finishing second in penalties with 138, just three behind the Edmonton Elks. Article content The good news is they finally cleaned up their act following a Week 19, 19-12 loss to the Montreal Alouettes in which they were penalized 12 times for 122 yards. Article content In the final three games, they were flagged a total of eight times — and that's including the five penalties for 55 yards they took while being pounded 58-38 by the Toronto Argos in the East Division semifinal.
