This Morning viewers call for 'more' Steph McGovern after presenter's appearance on rival programme

Yahoo2 days ago

This Morning viewers have called for 'more' Steph McGovern after the presenter made an appearance on her former rival programme.
The 43-year-old got her break in the media world when she became a main producer for the Today programme's daily financial news on BBC Radio 4.
Going on to produce BBC One's Six and Ten O'Clock news, Steph began appearing on camera in 2011 as BBC Breakfast's main business presenter.

After hosting Pocket Money Pitch for CBBC, Shop Well for Less with Alex Jones, Made in Great Britain and BBC Watchdog, Steph announced she was leaving the BBC for Channel 4 in 2019.
The show originally launched as The Steph Show in March 2020 and had to be broadcast from the presenter's house due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It returned later that summer under the new name of Steph's Packed Lunch.
Broadcast from Leeds, the series featured showbiz interviews, cooking segments, news, and consumer advice.
When it premiered, the series began airing at 12.30 pm, going head to head with ITV's panel show Loose Women. It later got an extra 30 minutes, moving its start time to during This Morning's final 30 minutes.
Steph's Packed Lunch was cancelled by Channel 4 in 2023, with a spokesperson placing the decision down to 'audience habits changing quicker than ever'.
They said at the time: 'We have to make difficult decisions about which programmes to invest in to best drive our digital-first strategy and we have decided not to recommission Steph's Packed Lunch when its existing production contract ends in December 2023.
Several months on from competing on Netflix reality show Celebrity Bear Hunt, Steph was on This Morning on Thursday (June 12).
Despite previously going up against two of ITV's flagship programmes in the ratings war, Steph got on well with Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard.
Sitting alongside This Morning contributor Nick Ferrari, Steph discussed a number of the day's big news stories, including the Indian plane crash.
Steph and Nick also discussed whether there is still a rivalry between the north and south, with Steph hailing from Tyne and Wear.
Those watching This Morning at home took to X, previously known as Twitter, to have their say on Steph's appearance.
@SabrinaSpectre said: 'Steph McGovern is such a brilliant broadcaster and we need her back on our screens more.' @philm2244 added: 'Bring back Steph's packed lunch.'
@Boppity_Boo34 wrote: 'Like Steph I'm a proud northerner and there still is a north/south divide and also Yorkshire never gets a mention not even on the bloody weather lol #ThisMorning.'
@Mate_of_Bob commented: 'I like the woman who was with @NickFerrariLBC. Who is she? Articulate, intelligent, funny and a Northerner!' @Mysteron_Voice posted: 'Ironic really that Steph McGovern's lunchtime show on Channel 4 was pitched directly *against* This Morning and Loose Women, and now here she is on This Morning.'

‘Bridgerton' Actress Says 'He Messed With Wrong Girl' After Fighting Off Attacker Who Stole Her Phone

Bridgerton actress Genevieve Chenneour has described how she fought off a thief attempting to snatch her mobile phone in a central London cafe. The Daily Mail newspaper has published footage of the actress – who plays Miss Clara Livingston in the hit Netflix period drama – sitting with her dog in a cafe in West London, being approached by a man who picked up her phone from next to her on the counter. The footage of the incident – which took place in February – shows Chenneour realising what had happened and accosting her thief with several blows before she got her phone back. She later recounted the whole incident lasted about five minutes, with her attacker pinned to the floor for most of the time. Chenneour also had the help of another customer in the cafe. The actress said on TikToktold that the thief had 'messed with the wrong girl' and she ITV morning show This Morning: 'I had a bit of a sixth sense that something wasn't quite right, as woman you have that kind of intuition. 'I don't know if I would advise anybody else to do it. 'I think I have very quick reactions, thanks to having three brothers growing up and I'm an aviated carded boxer. I think it just was an instinct, I also do a lot of fight training for work and acting… 'I thought that was a normal reaction and I read all the comments [online] and realised, actually, a lot of people would just let them take the phone.' 'It kind of went round the corner and it turned into a full-on scrap with two people [Boulares and his accomplice]. 'And I was threatened with being stabbed so it became a real matter, in my mind, of life and death. 'So, I did things like, I remember kicking him back with my leg to create space in case he had a weapon on him… It was just a life-changing, crazy moment.' The thief – who has been named as Zacariah Boulares – previously attacked TV host Aled Jones for his Rolex watch in 2023, and was given a youth detention, serving 14 months. He has since turned 18, hence he is now able to be named. A police officer appearing alongside Chenneour on the TV show stressed that everyone should be aware of potential thieves in the city's popular spots, with mobile phone theft on the rise. Former Chief Superintendent Parm Sandu said: 'Genevieve was very brave and I commend her for that but I would not recommend anybody, anybody fights back. It just isn't worth it. What happens to DOGE without Elon Musk?

Elon Musk holds a news conference with President Donald Trump to mark the end of his tenure as a special government employee overseeing DOGE on May 30 in the Oval Office of the White House. Tom Brenner for Washington Post via Getty Images Elon Musk may be gone from the Trump administration — and his friendship status with President Donald Trump may be at best uncertain — but his whirlwind stint in government certainly left its imprint. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), his pet government-slashing project, remains entrenched in Washington. During his 130-day tenure, Musk led DOGE in eliminating about 260,000 federal employee jobs and gutting agencies supporting scientific research and humanitarian aid. But to date, DOGE claims to have saved the government $180 billion — well short of its ambitious (and frankly never realistic) target of cutting at least $2 trillion from the federal budget. And with Musk's departure still fresh, there are reports that the federal government is trying to rehire federal workers who quit or were let go. For Elaine Kamarck, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, DOGE's tactics will likely end up being disastrous in the long run. 'DOGE came in with these huge cuts, which were not attached to a plan,' she told Today, Explained co-host Sean Rameswaram. Kamarck knows all about making government more efficient. In the 1990s, she ran the Clinton administration's Reinventing Government program. 'I was Elon Musk,' she told Today, Explained. With the benefit of that experience, she assesses Musk's record at DOGE, and what, if anything, the billionaire's loud efforts at cutting government spending added up to. Below is an excerpt of the conversation, edited for length and clarity. There's much more in the full podcast, so listen to Today, Explained wherever you get podcasts, including Apple Podcasts, Pandora, and Spotify. What do you think Elon Musk's legacy is? Well, he will not have totally, radically reshaped the federal government. Absolutely not. In fact, there's a high probability that on January 20, 2029, when the next president takes over, the federal government is about the same size as it is now, and is probably doing the same stuff that it's doing now. What he did manage to do was insert chaos, fear, and loathing into the federal workforce. There was reporting in the Washington Post late last week that these cuts were so ineffective that the White House is actually reaching out to various federal employees who were laid off and asking them to come back, from the FDA to the IRS to even USAID. Which cuts are sticking at this point and which ones aren't? First of all, in a lot of cases, people went to court and the courts have reversed those earlier decisions. So the first thing that happened is, courts said, 'No, no, no, you can't do it this way. You have to bring them back.' The second thing that happened is that Cabinet officers started to get confirmed by the Senate. And remember that a lot of the most spectacular DOGE stuff was happening in February. In February, these Cabinet secretaries were preparing for their Senate hearings. They weren't on the job. Now that their Cabinet secretary's home, what's happening is they're looking at these cuts and they're saying, 'No, no, no! We can't live with these cuts because we have a mission to do.' As the government tries to hire back the people they fired, they're going to have a tough time, and they're going to have a tough time for two reasons. First of all, they treated them like dirt, and they've said a lot of insulting things. Second, most of the people who work for the federal government are highly skilled. They're not paper pushers. We have computers to push our paper, right? They're scientists. They're engineers. They're people with high skills, and guess what? They can get jobs outside the government. So there's going to be real lasting damage to the government from the way they did this. And it's analogous to the lasting damage that they're causing at universities, where we now have top scientists who used to invent great cures for cancer and things like that, deciding to go find jobs in Europe because this culture has gotten so bad. What happens to this agency now? Who's in charge of it? Well, what they've done is DOGE employees have been embedded in each of the organizations in the government, okay? And they basically — and the president himself has said this — they basically report to the Cabinet secretaries. So if you are in the Transportation Department, you have to make sure that Sean Duffy, who's the secretary of transportation, agrees with you on what you want to do. And Sean Duffy has already had a fight during a Cabinet meeting with Elon Musk. You know that he has not been thrilled with the advice he's gotten from DOGE. So from now on, DOGE is going to have to work hand in hand with Donald Trump's appointed leaders. And just to bring this around to what we're here talking about now, they're in this huge fight over wasteful spending with the so-called big, beautiful bill. Does this just look like the government as usual, ultimately? It's actually worse than normal. Because the deficit impacts are bigger than normal. It's adding more to the deficit than previous bills have done. And the second reason it's worse than normal is that everybody is still living in a fantasy world. And the fantasy world says that somehow we can deal with our deficits by cutting waste, fraud, and abuse. That is pure nonsense. Let me say it: pure nonsense. Where does most of the government money go? Does it go to some bureaucrats sitting on Pennsylvania Avenue? It goes to us. It goes to your grandmother and her Social Security and her Medicare. It goes to veterans in veterans benefits. It goes to Americans. That's why it's so hard to cut it. It's so hard to cut it because it's us.

'Lovely' pub that's opened in former home of Coronation Street's Rovers Return

A new pub opened in Manchester this month and it used to be home to the Rovers Return pub on the Coronation Street set. The Stables Tavern, which was also once a stable, is a pub 'built for locals' as well as anyone who is seeking 'the simple joy of a good drink in good company.' From beers to cocktails and even a snack menu, this new Manchester pub has plenty to offer. The pub owners explain on its website that it's 'a historic tavern reimagined in the heart of Manchester centre, where everyone is welcomed like a regular, whether it's your first visit or your fiftieth.' The Stables Tavern on Grape Street is steeped in history: 'On the corner of Bonded Warehouse sits the Tavern that fed Manchester's Industrial Revolution. 'Nestled in the heart of St John's stands the Stable's Tavern, the heart of the St John's industrial age and the watering hole for workers, merchants and radicals alike.' The Manc shared the pub's connection to the iconic ITV soap and what visitors can expect: 'Inside, punters will find multiple beer taps with local beers, served with complimentary bowls of crisps as well as a menu of pub snacks like handmade sausage rolls and local pies.' With an outdoor terrace and a parlour area plus a bar, the pub has lots of space for customers to enjoy sipping their pints. Despite only opening on Friday, June 6, the pub has already received some praise from customers on Google Reviews. One customer said: 'What an amazing venue!! Thought it looked great on social media but I was blown away when we visited. Staff were brilliant and really friendly and we even got a free pint each! 'Pies were delicious and the rest of the menu looks just as good. The pub is dog friendly as well. Can't wait to go back and bring the dog to our new favourite local.'
