State of emergency in Banks Peninsula extended due to Akaroa land slip
Cracks on Lighthouse Road led to four homes being evacuated last week.

The state of emergency on storm-hit Banks Peninsula will remain in place for at least another day, while the Christchurch City Council monitors a land slip in Akaroa.
The council said the land was still rain saturated, with the potential for further slips.
A resident living on a farm above the Lighthouse Road slip, Charlotte Oborne, told RNZ her family had been cut off for more than a week, with the only route to town left impassable.
"I'm hoping they'll give us some information on Monday, rather than saying we'll have to wait longer, because we've got to... come up with a bit of a plan, if we know on the farm that we're not going to be able to use that route."
Her main concern was the lack of a clear timeframe for reopening the road.
The slip saw four homes evacuated as a precaution last week.
The state of emergency will be reassessed tomorrow.

60 new bus shelters being built in Chch
Photo: Christchurch City Council Waiting for the bus in east Christchruch is set to become a bit easier this winter. Christchurch City Council is installing 60 new bus shelters in the city with money from the Government's Climate Emergency Response Fund. Council transport operations manager Stephen Wright said: "We've targeted the most well-used stops, many around school routes in Christchurch east. "With more than 2000 passengers expected to benefit every single day, the new shelters are going to make it more comfortable for people waiting for the bus, particularly in the biting winter months." Photo: Christchurch City Council Fifty-five of the bus stops did not previously have shelters, while five are replacing older infrastructure. Wright said about 15 new shelters have already been installed. The work is expected to be finished by the end of September. "We're also improving accessibility and bus waiting areas by putting in hardstand areas, tactile pavers, seating, new bus stops, and relocating the bus stop," he said.

Dozens of homes without water as watermain bursts in Christchurch
Photo: RNZ / Joe Shaw A burst water main has opened up a hole in the road and left 50 properties in the Christchurch suburb of Fendalton without water. Christchurch City Council says the main burst about 6.30am on Friday. It has left a hole in the road surface on Fendalton Road. A section of the busy arterial route is closed while contractors try to fix the problem. Water can be seen flowing into nearby streets and workers are trying to pump it out of the hole. The council expects the repair work to take 2pm today. Earlier, traffic was backed up around Fendalton Road. Police say they received reports of water, flooding and potential road damage on Friday at about 6.20am. Workers at the scene. "I managed to get right up next to it and the sinkhole is a good one metre or two metres wide and there's a contractor digging there."
