PARIS : Defending champion Iga Swiatek continued her bid for a fifth French Open title when the Polish fifth seed overcame Romania's Jaqueline Cristian 6-2 7-5 to reach the Roland Garros fourth round on a steamy Friday.
With temperatures steadily soaring on the sixth day of the Grand Slam, Swiatek appeared in a hurry to escape the Parisian furnace and the five-time major winner raced through the first set on the back of two breaks.
What followed was a high-quality battle where both players tested each other before Swiatek prevailed after keeping cool in the final game of the second set.
'I'm just happy that I was super solid in that last game and did not give her any free points,' said Swiatek.
'She went for it, and it was a great match. We both played nice and I'm happy with my performance.'
Swiatek cooled herself with ice towels after the first set before coming under pressure from unseeded Romanian Cristian on Court Suzanne Lenglen in the second set, but the 23-year-old produced a tight hold in the third game.
Both players went toe-to-toe from there and Cristian hit a stinging forehand winner to level up at 4-4, raising her level again to hold serve two games later and prolonging Swiatek's stay on the court.
Roared on by fans, Swiatek held her nerve in a tense 12th game that had three deuces, before suddenly moving through the gears to quell the challenge of the free-swinging Cristian in nearly two hours.

Tennis-Svitolina saves match points to beat Paolini and reach French Open quarters

Tennis - French Open - Roland Garros, Paris, France - June 1, 2025 Ukraine's Elina Svitolina in action during her fourth round match against Italy's Jasmine Paolini, as empty seats are seen in the stands REUTERS/Denis Balibouse PARIS (Reuters) -A determined Elina Svitolina battled from the brink of defeat to overcome last year's runner-up Jasmine Paolini 4-6 7-6(6) 6-1 and reach the French Open quarter-finals after a thoroughly entertaining battle on Sunday. Victory came the hard way for Svitolina, who saved three match points in the second set to force a decider. She raised her level from there to earn a last-eight encounter with either 12th seed Elena Rybakina or defending champion Iga Swiatek. "I still can't believe this match finished my way, my head is still in it, in a big battle," said 30-year-old Ukrainian Svitolina, who shed tears of joy after the win. "Jasmine was playing really well and it was really tough. In the end, I'm happy I could stay composed and fight till the very end. Here I am in the next round. "I had to be aggressive, stay focused on my gameplan and take small opportunities to win the second set. It was one or two points that decided it and I'm pleased I could win it. In the third set I played really well to close the match." Fourth-seeded Paolini twice swapped breaks with Svitolina before holding to love in the ninth game of the match and pouncing to claim the opening set with a scorching forehand winner in the next game. The diminutive Italian grabbed a 3-1 lead in the second set but 13th seed Svitolina did not let her challenge fade on Court Philippe Chatrier as she recovered two breaks and saved two match points to make it 5-5 before forcing a tiebreak. The 29-year-old Paolini responded bravely after going 4-1 down and wasted another match point as Svitolina went on to level the contest and pump her fists to loud cheers, before using the momentum to get her nose in front in the decider. Svitolina pulled away by winning four games in a row before her opponent got on the board and she promptly completed the victory with a searing backhand winner to reach the quarter-finals of Roland Garros for a fifth time. PSG to celebrate long-awaited Champions League title with Champs-Elysees parade amid tight security after chaotic night

PARIS, June 1 — Paris Saint-Germain's players and staff will hold a victory parade on the Champs-Elysees on Sunday to celebrate with their fans after emphatically ending their long wait to win the Champions League. Coach Luis Enrique and his team including Desire Doue, the 19-year-old who lit up the final in Munich on Saturday by scoring twice in the stunning 5-0 win against Inter Milan, will also be hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. More than 100,000 people are expected to watch their heroes in the parade on Paris' showpiece avenue after the team won the biggest prize in European club football for the first time in their history. In a long night of wild celebrations, fans thronged the streets of the capital, letting off flares and fireworks as decades of pent-up frustration were released. Police made nearly 600 arrests across France, the interior ministry said, after more than 200 cars were torched and police clashed with youths. In the southwest town of Dax, a 17-year-old boy died after being stabbed in the chest. A 23-year-old man riding a scooter in central Paris was also killed after being hit by a vehicle. A policeman was put in an induced coma after being injured by a firework. The parade on the Champs-Elysees will be closed to traffic and surrounded by tight security. A victory parade by Liverpool Football Club's players in the English city last Monday ended in horrific scenes after a car ploughed into the crowd, leaving 79 people injured. Drawn from Paris suburbs In a message on X, formerly Twitter, Macron hailed a 'day of glory for PSG'. 'Bravo, we are all proud,' he wrote. 'Paris is the capital of Europe tonight.' The margin of victory was the greatest in a final in the history of the Champions League or the European Cup that preceded it. Many of the stars of the team, one of the youngest in the competition, are drawn from the huge football talent pool in the Paris suburbs after PSG's Qatari owners turned their back on their former policy of signing star players like Neymar and Lionel Messi. While Doue cemented his status as a rising star in world football, Senny Mayulu, another 19-year-old, came on as a substitute towards the end of the match and scored the fifth goal. Mayulu said afterwards that the achievement would take time to sink in. 'I still can't believe it, I think it will only seem real tomorrow. In the dressing room, everyone broke down in their own way, you could see it in their eyes, people were filled with joy and pride.' Lifting the trophy on Saturday after losing in their only other appearance in the final five years ago was the result of hundreds of millions of euros pumped into PSG since Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) bought an ailing club in 2011. 'The objective now is to win again. It has taken 14 years of hard work but we are building something for the future,' PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi said. — AFP

Svitolina stuns Paolini to reach French Open quarter-finals

ELINA Svitolina saved three match points to eliminate last year's runner-up Jasmine Paolini and book her place in the quarter-finals at the French Open on Sunday. The 30-year-old 13th seed roared back to upset the world number four 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-1 in their last-eight tie. 'I still cannot believe that this match finished my way,' said Svitolina. 'It was a really difficult match today, Jasmine was playing really well. It was really tough for me but I'm very happy I was able to stay composed and fight until the very last point.' Svitolina will next face either triple-defending champion Iga Swiatek or former Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina for a spot in the semi-finals. The Ukrainian has never progressed further than the last eight in Roland Garros, falling at that stage four times since her Paris debut 12 years ago. Paolini, who prepared for her tilt at the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen by winning the Italian Open earlier in May, has now fallen to Svitolina in both Grand Slams so far this year. In the third round of the Australian Open, the Italian world number four won the opening set before Svitolina staged a comeback and won the third set to love. On Court Philippe Chatrier, Svitolina forced a decider by outlasting her opponent in a topsy-turvy tie-break after Paolini passed up three match points in the second set, including one in the breaker. 'It was extremely tough but I'm very pleased I was able to win that second set,' said Svitolina, adding her future in the tournament had hung on just two or three points in the set which lasted over an hour. Svitolina then built on that momentum by racing into a 4-0 lead in the third set, before serving out the win at the first time of asking after nearly two-and-a-half hours of battle.
