Thomas Frank is Daniel Levy's biggest gamble yet after 13 managers in 25 years at Tottenham following Postecoglou axe

DANIEL LEVY was never going to win a popularity contest among the Tottenham fanbase.
But after his drastic action over the last week, he is now well and truly under the pump, as Ange Postecoglou might have put it.

Chairman Levy already had thousands of Spurs supporters taking to the streets to protest against his running of the club last season.
Yet since then he has ruthlessly sacked the man who delivered the club's first trophy in 17 years and who gave many fans their greatest night following the team.
And he has replaced that man with a head coach in Thomas Frank who, for all the wonders he worked at Brentford, has no track record of delivering major honours.
It is the 13th hiring-and-firing of Levy's 25-year Tottenham tenure — and his biggest gamble yet.

GAME CHANGER Major Premier League TV change with broadcasting giant to lose all coverage
Fans already accused the 63-year-old of failing to place winning silverware at the top of his priority list.
Axing Aussie Big Ange just 16 days after he masterminded their Europa League triumph over Manchester United in Bilbao to finally lift Spurs' trophy curse will only amplify that perspective.
Whether the views of many on Levy and the club's ownership are too entrenched to be altered by now is hugely debatable.
But if this latest shove on the managerial revolving door in N17 goes badly, then the bad feeling towards the board could reach new decibel levels.

Frank, 51, will receive plenty of goodwill from many fans, who will respect how he had the Bees regularly overachieving during his near seven-year reign.
But they will also be extending a word of warning to the friendly Dane over his new employer and half expecting him to be out on his ear in less than two years — because that is what usually happens.
Sancho's Next Move: Three Clubs in the Race! | From The Sports Desk | Sun Sport
As a statement following Postecoglou's sacking from protest group Change for Tottenham read: 'The real issue is not who wears the tracksuit but who holds the power.
"Daniel Levy and ENIC have now overseen more than two decades of false dawns, short-term thinking and cultural decay.
'The manager may change but the problem stays the same.'
And 59-year-old Postecoglou — should Frank decide to seek out his opinion — will hardly paint a positive picture of his old boss either, having been strung along with radio silence for a fortnight before being cold-bloodedly handed his P45.
In fairness to Levy, making a change was not the easy, crowd-pleasing call.
That would have been sticking with the Australian, given how many of the fanbase — including the thousands that previously wanted Ange out — were now behind him. Nor was it the cheap option either, flying in the face of a consistent criticism in this instance.
Levy and majority owners ENIC have regularly been accused of not splashing the cash to a proportionate degree for their revenue streams.

Critics do not just include disgruntled supporters but current star defender Cristian Romero, who took aim at the board's lack of investment during a TV interview in December.
Yet they have forked out around £5million to pay off Postecoglou and his staff, along with the £2m bonus the former Celtic boss picked up for his Europa League win.
And they have spent more than £10m on landing Frank, plus his highly rated No 2 Justin Cochrane, fitness coach Chris Haslam and analyst Joe Newton.
Levy believes the pitiful Premier League form under Postecoglou was more important than winning a European trophy.
Spurs finished 17th last season and Levy made his point with reference to '78 points taken from 66 games' in the announcement confirming Postecoglou's sacking.
Defender Micky van de Ven has already described binning Postecoglou as 'a strange decision', summing up the mood of a squad who were firmly behind the Athens-born boss.
Whether it proves to be the right call or not, only time will tell.
But one thing is for certain, if it does not, the fans will be venting their anger in only one direction.

George Russell mocks Max Verstappen after beating F1 rival to Canadian GP pole

Max Verstappen was denied pole for the Canadian Grand Prix by George Russell who made it clear he thinks he has an advantage over the Red Bull racer at the first corner on Sunday George Russell secured pole in Montreal for the second successive year with a mighty lap which denied Max Verstappen. And the Brit reacted by cracking a joke at the Dutchman's expense with Verstappen just one penalty point away from a race ban after their collision in Barcelona two weeks ago. Aware of that, Russell said he felt confident about going into the first corner wheel to wheel with the four-time Formula 1 champion tonight. "I've got a few more points on my licence to play with," he smirked, drawing some cheers but also audible boos from fans in the stands at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. ‌ Verstappen had knocked championship leader Oscar Piastri off the top of the leaderboard but then Russell snatched his sixth career pole. The Brit said: "To be honest that last lap was probably one of the most exhilarating laps of my life. ‌ "I got into the last corner and I was six tenths up and I was like, 'This lap is mighty'. Crossing the line and seeing we were P1 was a real surprise, but I was so chuffed with it." Russell had whooped with delight over the radio after his pole was confirmed and shouted: "What a f****** lap!" Speaking on Sky Sports, 2016 World champion with Mercedes Nico Rosberg said: "We just witnessed something very, very special. This is amazing. That car is not supposed to be that far in front. Hats off." Verstappen will have the advantage of starting on the cleaner side of the track but said: "I would always pick P1 because you start a little bit more forward, but it's fine. We'll see what we can do tomorrow. I felt quite good all weekend and the car was in a good window. Overall, I'm very happy with qualifying. I think the car was again working quite well." ‌ Championship leader Piastri has four poles to his name this year but had to settle for third place on the grid. He was still pleased, though, no doubt made to feel better by the fact team-mate and title rival Lando Norris was way down in seventh having struggled throughout qualifying. The Aussie said: "To be honest, after how practice went I'm really happy with myself at the moment. It was a nice turnaround. I'm pretty happy with third, which is a bit different this year but I'll definitely take it here." But a glum Norris said: "Not ideal! Too many mistakes, and I hit the wall in the last lap. The car felt good today, I just made too many mistakes." Lewis Hamilton matched his best Grand Prix qualifying result of 2025 so far by going fifth fastest for Ferrari, behind rookie Kimi Antonelli. But team-mate Charles Leclerc got stuck in dirty air on his final lap having set the quickest first sector time and had to settle for just eighth.

Thomas Frank to cast eye over £12m Spurs gem as early loan offers land on table

Luka Vuskovic is set to arrive at Tottenham this summer after they struck a deal to sign the Croatian wonderkid from Hajduk Split in September 2023 Thomas Frank is set to cast an eye over 18-year-old Tottenham centre-back Luka Vuskovic in pre-season despite widespread loan interest in the Croatian. Spurs agreed a reported £12million package deal with Hajduk Split for the teenager, then 16, in September 2023 and they're understood to have pipped Manchester City and PSG to his signature. The towering defender starred on loan in Belgium last season with KVC Westerlo, scoring an impressive seven goals from the back, having also previously flourished in Poland during a six-month spell with Radomiak Radom in 2024. ‌ Now a series of top-flight clubs from Germany, France and Belgium including Hamburg and Club Brugge have contacted his representatives to register an early interest in signing Vuskovic on loan for the 2025-26 season, should he become available. ‌ However, Tottenham are in no immediate rush to make a decision over his future and they're yet to rule out Vuskovic potentially staying put as part of their first-team squad for the forthcoming campaign. Earlier this week, he was handed his senior international debut by Croatia when he was a late substitute in a 5-1 World Cup qualification win over Czechia. Spurs believe they have a major talent on their hands but they intend to manage his development carefully in a bid to ensure he fulfils his potential in north London. Speaking earlier this month, Vuskovic was full of praise for the Europa League winners and shared his excitement about joining the club, stating: 'First of all, I'm looking forward to feeling that level and seeing where I am in relation to the players who just won the Europa League so that I know what I need to work on the most. 'After that, I'll see in agreement with the club which is the smartest next step. The club has proven to be careful and wise in making decisions so far. Belgium has proven to be an ideal league at this stage of my career, and I think it is otherwise a great development league because it gives a lot of opportunities to young players." ‌ Belgian side Westerlo have also made no secret of the fact they're keen to forge a partnership with Tottenham to sign more players on loan from Spurs in the future, though their chances of landing Vuskovic for another year look very slim. Alfie Devine also gained valuable senior experience with the Jupiler Pro League outfit, netting six goals in 30 top-flight appearances. In the past six weeks, even before the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, Spurs held a series of meetings with the representatives or their loanees to review their progress. New boss Frank has a proven track record for utilising and developing talent both at Brentford and Brondby, having also previously coached Denmark at various youth levels. Man Utd's three back-up transfer options as Viktor Gyokeres snubs Ruben Amorim

Manchester United were hoping to sign Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer, but Mirror Football understands that the 27-year-old has rejected a move to Old Trafford and would prefer to join Arsenal instead. The striker wants to join a club that will be playing Champions League football next season and United failed to qualify for the tournament after finishing 15th in the Premier League and suffering a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final. The news comes as a major blow for United, with manager Ruben Amorim keen on a reunion with Gyokeres, and the club are now turning their attention to alternative options. The Red Devils are in need of a prolific striker, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee disappointing last season. The pair managed just 17 goals between them in a combined 105 appearances across all competitions and Amorim is desperate to bring in an upgrade. United have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves, but he is expected to play in a slightly deeper role. With all that in mind, Mirror Football takes a look at three potential alternatives to Gyokeres... Hugo Ekitike Hugo Ekitike has been linked with a number of clubs across Europe after an impressive campaign where he scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists in 48 games for Eintracht Frankfurt. According to Sky Germany, United have opened talks with Frankfurt over a deal and the Bundesliga side are demanding a fee of around £85million. However, the report adds that both Liverpool and Chelsea are also interested in Ekitike. Victor Osimhen Victor Osimhen is expected to leave Napoli this summer after spending last season on loan at Galatasaray, netting 37 goals in 41 appearances. The Sun are reporting that he has emerged as a 'genuine back-up plan' for United after they missed out on Gyokeres, with Osimhen recently rejecting a hugely lucrative offer from Al-Hilal as he wants to remain in Europe. Jean-Philippe Mateta Crystal Palace star Jean-Philippe Mateta has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford after scoring 17 goals last season and helping his side lift the FA Cup. Mateta would be a more affordable signing given his contract is due to expire in 2027 and French outlet L'Equipe have previously reported that United have 'already positioned themselves' to make a move for the 27-year-old. However, Palace are hoping to convince Mateta to sign a new deal. Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football.
