Pahalgam terror attack: How a Hindu Brahmin survived by reciting Kalma, the Islamic prayer, ‘When I started...'

Debasish Bhattacharya, a Hindu Brahmin, was saved by a whisker from the terrorists' bullets during the deadly Pahalgam terror attack by reciting the Islamic verse 'Kalma'.
Bhattacharya, a Bengali Professor at Silchar's Assam University, was holidaying with his family in Jammu and Kashmir.
Just 20 minutes into their visit to the Baisaran meadows, the Brahmin heard a gunshot, which he initially thought was from the forest department to keep wild animals away.
'We were just enjoying the view when I heard a gunshot. When I inquired about it, I was told it might be from the forest department to scare away wild animals,' Bhattacharya told NDTV over a telephonic interview.
However, he soon saw a man with a gun who shot a tourist after a brief conversation with the couple. Soon, four gun-totting terrorists started targeting tourists visiting the picturesque spot.
Bhattacharya said the people around him crouched on the ground and started reciting the 'Kalma', a declaration of faith that forms the core beliefs of Muslims.
"So I also followed them. A terrorist walked up to us and shot the man next to me. Then he looked at me and asked what I was doing," Bhattacharya said.
'Kya bol raha hai,' asked the terrorist in Hindi.
Terrified Bhattacharya said he started reciting the Kalma louder, 'and did not reply to his question'.
'I don't know what happened; he just turned around and left to join his group on the other side,' he shared.
Emphasising that it wasn't just the Kalma that saved his life, the professor said he followed what everyone else was doing in an 'absolutely instantaneous, heard mentality' way.
The professor said that after the terrorists left, he, along with his wife and son, immediately abandoned the place and walked back.
'I somehow managed to escape by crossing the 7-foot high fence,' he said, adding that they walked following the hoof marks of the horse.
Bhattacharya told NDTV that locals helped them throughout. 'Our horse guide (pony riders_ came searching for us. They came back for us. They found us, and took us back.'
He shared that the driver of the cab they had hailed for coming to the Baisaran meadows rushed them back to their hotel in Srinagar.
Bhattacharya, who shared that his family's trip was to end on Saturday, said the Assam government is making arrangements to bring him and his family back to their hometown.
The Assam Chief Minister's Office (CMO) also posted an update about the same on Twitter (now X). It said: 'The CM Office Assam has spoken to a survivor from Assam of the dastardly Pahalgam Terror Attack and has taken a full brief of the incident which they have faced yesterday.'
'The entire family's return to the state is being arranged on priority and the government of Assam is in touch with the govt of India to bring the family back to Assam at the earliest,' it added.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also said his office is in touch with Bhattacharya. 'We will ensure his safe return to Assam soon.'
A group of terrorists opened fire at Baisaran meadows, killing at least 26 people, mostly tourists from other states, and injuring several others.
Some of the eyewitnesses have claimed that the victims were asked about their religion before they were shot. The terrorists only targeted men.

Suhas Shetty murder: Dakshina Kannada MP and VHP welcome NIA probe

Welcoming Union Home Ministry's decision to hand over investigation of the murder of Hindutva activist and murder accused Suhas Shetty to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta on Sunday, June 8, said Dakshina Kannada district wants freedom from anti-national elements that are active in the district and become an active part of Prime Minister's vision of Viksit Bharat. In a statement here, Capt. Chowta said he wrote a detailed letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on May 2 expressing the need for an NIA probe following Shetty's murder in full public view in Bajpe on May 1. He had expressed the need of a comprehensive and impartial investigation as there was suspicion of involvement of members of banned Popular Front of India (PFI) in the murder. The nation cannot afford to allow radical, anti-national, and jihadi forces to fester in any part of the country. One month into the letter, the Union Home Ministry decided to hand over probe of Shetty's murder to NIA. Shetty's murder was a larger pattern of growing lawlessness, emboldened Islamic radicalism, and anti-national elements that continue to operate in coastal Karnataka. Following targeted killing of BJP cadre Praveen Nettaru in July 2022 by members of banned PFI organisation, life of Suhas Shetty, another young Hindu, was extinguished in a similar manner. The NIA probe will bring to light how radical, anti-national, and jihadi forces were silently operating in Dakshina Kannada and other parts of the country. This was the first step by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to root out anti-national forces from Dakshina Kannada, he said. A delegation led by State BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra had met the Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot and placed the request to the State government to hand over investigation of Suhas Shetty murder to NIA. The BJP has no confidence in Siddaramaiah-led Congress government rendering justice to murder victim's family as the State government has continued with its appeasement politics. The government has political understanding with Social Democratic Party of India, which is extended form of banned PFI, the MP alleged. VHP reacts Vishwa Hindu Parishad Dakshina Karnataka joint secretary Sharan Pumpwell, in a statement, said with NIA investigation the VHP has all confidence that all those who were involved in Suhas Shetty's murder, those who conspired and financed the act, will be booked and justice will be delivered to victim's family members. By handing over to NIA, the Union Home Ministry has rightly answered demand of lakhs of Hindus and it was a moral victory to the fight of Hindus. In response to the murder, the VHP had given a bandh call on May 2 across Dakshina Kannada. A massive protest meet was held on May 25 in Bajpe demanding NIA investigation into the murder. Mr. Pumpwell was arrested on May 27 for allegedly giving inciting statements on the night of May 1, which led to damage of public property, communal tension and public peace on May 2 and subsequent days.

Targeted oppression of Brahmins under TDP regime

Tadepalli (Guntur): Former MLA Malladi Vishnu has strongly condemned the rising incidents of targeted oppression against Brahmin community under the TDP-led coalition government. He said the government is treating Brahmins as weak and expendable, and the demolition of the historic Satavahana College in Vijayawada stands as a shocking example of this systematic marginalization. In a statement on Saturday, he questioned the role of the police during the demolition. 'When the college was being razed, what were the police doing? Why didn't they intervene to protect public property?' he asked. He further pointed out that vital student certificates were buried under the rubble while the administration remained a silent exposed that a TDP MLC was involved in the kidnapping of a college representative in connection with this case, yet the government took no action. 'All of this is part of a conspiracy to illegally grab the five-acre land belonging to the college,' he said.

After NDTV Report Exposes Constable Exam Scam, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Orders Crackdown

Quick Read Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav condemned police constable recruitment scam, calling it a betrayal. An investigation into biometric fraud has begun, leading to FIRs and arrests. The scheme undermined merit and affected numerous deserving candidates. Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has broken his silence on the police constable recruitment scam exposed by NDTV, calling it a betrayal of thousands of deserving candidates and ordering immediate, stern action. "In light of the information received about fraud and irregularities in the police constable recruitment 2023 process, I have directed strict action to be taken immediately. Such criminal acts, which cause injustice to deserving candidates, will not be tolerated in Madhya Pradesh," the Chief Minister said in a strongly worded statement. Mr Yadav said the police headquarters has taken note of the matter on its own (suo motu) and launched an investigation into the biometric data and Aadhaar history of all the selected candidates. "Wherever impersonation has been prima facie established, criminal cases have been registered and strict action is being ensured," he said. This announcement comes days after NDTV uncovered a sophisticated network of the 'solver mafia', Aadhaar tampering, and biometric fraud that allowed undeserving candidates to steal the dreams of genuine aspirants. The investigation began when anomalies were spotted during the physical test rounds in Morena district - leading officials to uncover a pattern of multiple Aadhaar updates, changed biometrics, and impersonators appearing in written exams. With over 9.6 lakh applicants for 7,411 constable posts, the stakes were high. But instead of being a test of merit, the recruitment process became a target for organised fraud. Solvers, reportedly charging Rs 4-5 lakh per candidate, cleared the written exams using fake identities, and the original candidates later updated their Aadhaar credentials to reclaim their place. So far, 19 first information reports (FIRs) have been filed, 12 people arrested, and over 100 suspects are under investigation - including Aadhaar operators and candidates. A single solver is alleged to have appeared in six different exams, clearing five. Aadhaar centres in Bhitarwar, Morena, and Sheopur have come under the scanner for enabling mass-scale biometric manipulation. The scam has not only triggered outrage but also crushed the hopes of countless aspirants. Officials say the scam's links may stretch to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Delhi, echoing the Vyapam scandal from a decade ago. The methods have evolved, but the motive remains unchanged: corruption, influence, and stolen opportunities. While the state government's crackdown has begun, the real challenge lies in restoring the sanctity of recruitment. For now, aspirants across the state wait - not just for justice, but for a system they can trust.
