MoS Defence announces expansion of NCC by three lakh cadets
New Delhi, June 3 (UNI) Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth on Tuesday announced the planned expansion of National Cadet Corps (NCC) by three lakh cadets across the country.
The Minister said this during the inauguration of the Special Joint State Representatives and Additional/Deputy Directors General (JS R&A/D) Conference of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) in Bhopal, a Defence Ministry statement said.
Several states have already agreed and committed to fast-track the necessary training infrastructure for the planned expansion.
Addressing the gathering, Sanjay Seth reaffirmed the NCC's role in nation-building and youth development. He highlighted recent initiatives including the inclusion of ex-servicemen as NCC instructors, providing new employment avenues for veterans and lauded the NCC's active involvement in national campaigns such as the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Naya Savera Scheme, and Nasha Mukti Abhiyan.
He also congratulated the NCC Mount Everest Expedition team for their successful summit on May 18, describing it as a powerful example of cadet courage and resilience.
Calling for continued centre-state collaboration, Seth urged states to fulfil their commitments towards manpower, infrastructure, and funding to support this historic expansion, reinforcing NCC's integral role in shaping the youth and securing the nation's future.
Director General NCC Lt Gen Gurbirpal Singh outlined the Corps' achievements and roadmap ahead, with a focus on establishing robust training and camping infrastructure nationwide. He emphasised the goal of fostering greater youth participation and improving cadet performance.

Umeed portal to monitor Waqf properties launched
New Delhi, June 6 (UNI) Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday launched the UMEED Central Portal — a groundbreaking digital initiative aimed at ensuring real-time uploading, verification, and monitoring of Waqf properties across India. UMEED (Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development) aims to streamline Waqf property management to ensure fair usage, particularly for the benefit of poor Muslims, women, and children. To ensure accountability, the portal will create a digital inventory with geo-tagging of all Waqf properties, online grievance redressal system for better responsiveness, transparent leasing and usage tracking, integration with GIS mapping and other e-Governance tools, public access to verified records and reports among others. Union MoS George Kurian who was also present on the occasion here called the launch a "historic step," asserting that the system will prevent misuse and ensure properties serve their original charitable purposes, said a statement here. At the same time, Union Ministry Affairs Secretary Dr. Chandra Shekhar Kumar noted the portal's potential to support education, healthcare, livelihood, and welfare for underprivileged Muslim communities.

PM flags off Katra-Srinagar train, dedicates USBRL project to nation
Katra (J&K), June 6 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday dedicated the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project to the nation by flagging off the Vande Bharat train to Srinagar from Katra railway station in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. Modi was accompanied by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The PM flagged off Vande Bharat in line with his commitment to boost rail infrastructure and connectivity in the region. The 272 km-long USBRL project, built with around Rs 43,780 crore includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km) and 943 bridges. The project establishes all-weather, seamless rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country aiming to transform regional mobility and driving socio-economic integration. This is the first visit of the Prime Minister to J&K during ongoing Operation Sindoor and post April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians, including 25 tourists and a local were killed. Of the total 272km of the USBRL project, 209km was commissioned in phases with the first one (118 km Qazigund-Baramulla section) commissioned in October 2009, followed by (18km) Banihal-Qazigund in June 2013, (25km) Udhampur-Katra in July 2014 and (48.1 km) Banihal-Sangaldan stretch in February last year. The work on the 46 km Sangaldan-Reasi section was also completed in June last year, leaving a 17- km stretch between Reasi and Katra that was also completed in February-March this year. That led to the start of trial runs, including that of Vande Bharat. The Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express will have features like a heating system, anti-spall layers, and automatic doors. The train is designed to operate smoothly in cold weather, down to minus 20 degrees Celsius. The Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat will run on the world's highest railway arch bridge and Anji Bridge built on the Chenab in Reasi district. UNI VBH PRS

Train links welcome, but human links matter more: Mirwaiz
Srinagar, June 6 (UNI) As Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first Vande Bharat Express connecting Katra with Srinagar, Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq welcomed the improved connectivity but reminded the Centre on Friday that it is 'human links, not just train links,' that matter more. Addressing the Friday congregation at Srinagar's historic Jamia mosque in old Srinagar, Mirwaiz, who is also Kashmir's chief cleric, called for the release of prisoners on Eid-ul-Adha as a goodwill gesture. He said for thousands of families in J&K, the Eid festival brings more pain than joy. 'Their sons, husbands, fathers and brothers have been incarcerated for years — many without trial — in jails within and outside J&K. And each passing day, more of our youth are detained,' he said. Mirwaiz said all such prisoners, including political leadership, remain in the prayers and thoughts of the people. 'If the Prime Minister truly seeks to reduce the 'dil ki doori' (distance of hearts) which he often mentions in his speeches, then such humanitarian steps are the real way forward. Train links are welcome, but it is the human links that truly matter and endure,' Mirwaiz said. Kashmir's chief cleric also termed the death of Zubair Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Srinagar, under mysterious circumstances in New Delhi on Monday "deeply disturbing". While Zubair's family claimed their son was killed in Delhi, police in Delhi said there was no 'indication of foul play' in his death. 'Zubair's 'custodial-like death' — as claimed by his family — has brought back haunting memories of such deaths and raised serious concerns regarding the safety and security of Kashmiris residing or working in different parts of India,' Mirwaiz said. 'After the recent Pahalgam incident, Kashmiris across the country are increasingly facing hostility. And now, an innocent young trader has been killed in cold blood. How long will this go on?' Mirwaiz asked. He urged the Government of India and the UT administration to fulfill their constitutional responsibility and ensure the safety, security, and dignity of all Kashmiri citizens, especially those outside the region. 'The silence and inaction only embolden those targeting Kashmiris,' he warned. Mirwaiz also made a heartfelt appeal to civil rights organisations, writers, intellectuals, and conscientious citizens of India to raise their voice against the growing onslaught on Kashmiris and to stand up in solidarity with the victims of such brutality.
