26k+ still powerless: CU talks Wednesday repair plans
SPRINGFIELD — In the worst power outage event in Springfield since 2007, City Utilities is referring to this as a 'prolonged power outage event'.
In the video above, you can see the full interview between Ozarks First News Anchor Jesse Inman, and Joel Alexander, Media Relations Manager for City Utilities. Alexander stopped by Ozarks First morning show 'Daybreak' on Wednesday to break down what crews are up against as we head into Wednesday.
Alexander says a large-scale emergency was declared Tuesday afternoon allowing them to call in mutual-aid crews. Ozarks First asked the question on everyone's mind this morning: How long until power is fully restored?
'We really can't give an estimate on individual customers, or a full restoration on this. It's just too soon to tell,' Alexander told Ozarks First News Anchor Jesse Inman. 'We're just 24 hours into this, basically. Our crews are working around the clock to get people restored just as quickly as we can.'
The scale of the outages are being compared to the ice storm of 2007 that crippled power to tens of thousands of customers at that time. However, Alexander points out some difference between that storm, and the damage seen from Tuesday's storms. 'Public works is actually out using dozers and heavy duty equipment to get trees that are on the streets off, so that we can even get in,' says Alexander.
Wind from the storms measured at nearly 90 mph on Tuesday, toppling trees and power lines. No tornado has been confirmed yet in Springfield, although the National Weather Service will continue surveying damage this morning.
As of approximately 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, City Utilities estimates about 26,500 people are still without power, which is about half of what CU saw at the peak of outages. Alexander says crews worked overnight, which he says is dangerous and much slower than daytime work. As for the plan on Wednesday, Alexander describes it as all-hands-on-deck.
'We're going to have at least 100 lineman that are going to be out there. We'll have support crews, and tree trimming crews. We're going to see a lot of change in the outage number as we go throughout the day, and this is going to be a long term event,' Alexander says, adding that there is a priority list CU has on certain places to make sure the community is still functioning such as hospitals. That doesn't necessarily mean that certain neighborhoods will take priority.
'We try to look at the areas we can make that largest impact of bringing customers back on. It's not necessarily that we take those calls as they come in. Some of those are maybe outages in the backyard that require special equipment, or we may climb up the pole and make that repair. Some of it may be that we can bring a feeder or a substation back on and bring a larger number of customers back on.'

FEMA teams in the Ozarks survey Memorial Day storm damage
MISSOURI — FEMA teams are in the Ozarks this week, survey damage reports from Memorial Day weekend storms and flooding. 'They are going through the five impacted counties from the May 23 through May 26 storms, and they're looking at damage to public infrastructure, roadways, if there's public buildings or any public utilities that might have been damaged from those storms,' Ryan Lowry-Lee with FEMA said. OzarksFirst shadowed the FEMA team in Dade County and spoke to Presiding Commissioner Kim Kinder about the damage that remains. 'When we have major flooding because it is the Sac River it's connected to Stockon Lake, so if it's flooded, at Stockton Lake, they let water out and stuff, it all rises. So we've had to deal with that in the past and they can take out the whole road there. It has in the past. It's quite a bit and it's causing people to have to drive an extra 5 to 10 miles around, you know, to get to their work and stuff like that.' Lowry-Lee says their teams are looking at public assistance, not for damage done on private property. 'The state's requested it as damage assessments just for the public assistance, which is those public infrastructure pieces,' Lowry-Lee said. 'What happens after a storm like this if the state determines that there's damage and that's damage to public infrastructure, that they could submit a request for a disaster declaration, we link up with them, do the damage assessment.' Kinder believes Dade County has certainly met its threshold. 'We're a rural county. We're kind of a poor county and with the amount of damages and stuff that we've had, our current threshold to meet for a FEMA project is around $33,000. We're estimating now over $200,000 that we've had, so that's a big impact to our budget here in the county since our road budget isn't that huge.' 'When a disaster declaration is approved for public assistance, there is no set dollar amount that it's approved for. There's generally a cost share involved. So it's generally 75% federal and 25% local and state concessionaire. So again, it just depends on what those damages are. As the state puts together those projects and begins to make repairs to address those damages, it's a reimbursement on the public assistance side,' Lowry-Lee said. Kinder says she's hoping the roads will be back to normal soon. 'We are rural. There's not a million people that live on the road, but every person counts here in Dade County, so we try to get it together as quickly as we can,' Kinder said. 90-degree weather close at hand in the Ozarks
We have yet to hit 90° in Springfield this year, but the average first 90-degree day is just days away on June 13. Parts of Western Missouri and Northwest Arkansas, however, have hit 90° already. In Joplin, 90° was achieved on Sunday, June 8, and 91° was reached in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the same day. It's not unusual for Western Missouri to reach 90° before Springfield. The average first 90-degree day in Joplin is May 29, roughly 2 weeks earlier in the year. Oddly enough, areas west of Springfield also reach 90° earlier. The average first 90-degree day in West Plains, for instance, is on June 10, and in Rolla the average first 90-degree day is June 4. The warmest temperature recorded in Springfield so far is 87°, which was recorded on June 8. The earliest first 90-degree day in Springfield was back in 1907 when the city achieved 90° on March 20. The latest first 90-degree day was on September 26, 1904! Springfield sees an average of 36 90-degree days and two 100-degree days each year. The most 90-degree days recorded in a single year was 86 back in 1954. The most 100-degree days in a single year were 22 in both 1954 and 1934. The last time Springfield recorded 5 or more 100-degree days in a summer was in 2022, when 8 days made the triple digits. There were zero in 2024 and two in 2023. These years produced an average number of 90-degree days, with 37 in 2024 and 39 in 2023. The 2025 summer outlook from the Ozarks First weather team suggests a slow start to the typical summer heat, which may result in a near-normal to slightly cooler-than-normal summer season. This is largely because it takes more energy to heat a wet environment versus a dry one. All the rain we've seen this spring may help hold back the heat a bit longer than normal. On a climatic scale, this summer pattern is shaping up to resemble 2017's pattern. We are coming off an El Niño last spring and are currently engaged in neutral conditions (La Nada). Spring 2017 came with heavy rain and flooding… Sound familiar? This led to a cooler-than-normal summer in 2017. Flooding cleanup continues in Ozark
OZARK, Mo. — Even though the floodwaters have gone down, some places around the city of Ozark are still feeling the effects. 'The flooding was pretty surprising,' said Ozark neighbor Jared Robbins. On Friday, May 23, heavy overnight rain poured over local communities — nearly submerging cars and businesses in Ozark. 'It's definitely the worst I've ever seen here,' said Ryan Nelson, who watched the floodwaters rise on Saturday. The Finley River flooded over into the Career Center and local parks, as well as the parking lot of a local Chinese restaurant. After just a few days, the only reminder of the knee-deep floodwaters is from the markings on the sides of buildings and debris scattered along fence lines. 'I don't think we were really prepared,' Robbins said. Robbins tells Ozarks First as a whole, the community wasn't ready for the weather to hit as hard as it did. 'We could have handed out sandbags and that kind of thing,' Robbins said. Robbins has lived in the area for five years. 'I wasn't here for the 2017 floods, but what I did see, it caught me by surprise,' Robbins said. He says he was content with how the city responded to the flooding. 'They handled it better than in the past,' Robbins said. 'And they were able to roll with the punches a little bit better.' But he says there's always room for improvement. 'Specifically where the Riverside Inn used to be,' Robbins said. 'I do feel that flooding there has been a lingering issue for decades and the building is no longer there, of course, but the roadway still is. And now all that's torn up.' He tells me neighbors in the community have stepped up to lend a helping hand. 'We're all about coming together in times of trial, as most communities should be,' Robbins said.
